The anonymous reporting party called to report, someone shooting bullets from a van. The suspect had also blocked access to the parking area to another neighbor and had brandished a firearm at her. The person being blocked in by the suspect was a mother, returning home to her children in the apartment complex. At approximately 4:16 p.m., a two officer unit arrived on scene. Approximately 1 minute later, officers broadcasted over the radio that they were being shot at by the suspect. Two officers returned fire, the suspect reloaded his firearm and ran Northbound through the apartment complex. Additional responding officers arrived on scene and were positioned in the area to where the suspect was fleeing. The suspect then encountered one of those officers. The suspect pointed his firearm at one of the responding officers while aggressively advancing towards him, when a third officer discharged his firearm striking the suspect. The suspect was taken into custody at approximately 4:21 p.m.. Responding officers immediately provided medical aid to the suspect and summoned medical personnel to the scene. The suspect was transported to a local hospital, where he was treated for his injuries. A loaded, unregistered firearm was recovered from the suspect at the scene. The suspect is 41-year-old Ricardo Villareal, a resident of San Jose. Villareal had a prior criminal conviction that prohibited him from possessing firearms, including a previous conviction for assaulting Police and possession of an illegal firearm.

They really do need to find a new way to open their squad doors faster, and probably remotely and universally for the whole station. Locating keys, running to get them, trying to get them to work in the lock, all while in a very big hurry with a dump of adrenaline onboard, is just silly. Add in the time it takes to find the rifle in someone else's squad, get it out of its case, loaded, etc. It's just not an efficient system and Matt needs to put his phone down and focus on what's important in that moment! Priorities, Matt! You only have 2 hands!

Also, you might argue for a higher caliber maybe a 7.62 to be used by city police, and ill counter that argument with the fact the officer arguably mag dumped toward the man and apartments and the gunman survived. i slowed the vid down and counted 16 shots fired close range at the suspect. most of those shots missed the suspect but unfortunately no news on how many landed yet. but ill say with great confidence and training in firearms myself the physiology of a human body combined with the physics of a 5.56 round at that range, at any range really is going to obliterate your torso cavity and 16 shots on target would have without a doubt killed anyone on this planet if landed. now getting to the argument at hand here because the point is not to wish death on a man or to put that on the officers mental weight but now you would argue to give that officer a weapon which would even with teh correct ammo for urban use best case will rip through the soft walls, walls because its not stopping at the first one maybe not even the third given an angle to travel of the apartments directly in line with that engagement? nah bruh. the 5.56 in a well trained well placed engagement is more than enough to do the job here and im dumbfounded at the accuracy of this officer and the dumping of his mag with what could have led to the harm of the public. lets just be real man. benefit of the doubt is always gonna go toward an officer and i understand this but to ignore lessons which could be learned in blind defense in place of facts has led to far too many excuses to amend training, honesty with the general public and trust, and turned Police Chiefs and elected Sherriff into some of the most powerful lobbyists in this country with zero checks and balance to answer to, unless another one of them decides to stand up. Regardless of how I or you feel about that the opportunity to be better, and train better is left on the doorstep. a cop-out.
