On August 24, 2024, the students of classes 11 and 12 at Doon International School engaged in a spirited debate competition that brought out the best in public speaking and critical thinking. The topic for the debate was, “Social Media and Screen Time are the Bane of Today’s Generation,” a subject that sparked intense discussions and varied opinions.
The event featured 8 debaters-one from each of the four houses (Ranjit, Akbar, Teresa, and Ashoka) presenting arguments both for and against the topic. Each house was represented by a speaker advocating for the motion and one arguing against it, leading to a balanced and engaging dialogue. The participants tackled key points such as the impact of screen time on mental health, productivity, and the role of social media in shaping today’s culture and relationships.
The debaters skillfully presented their research-backed arguments, employing persuasive rhetoric and logical reasoning. The competition was judged based on the quality of arguments, clarity of thought, rebuttal strength, and overall presentation. The intense exchanges showcased the students' depth of understanding and ability to critically analyze contemporary issues.
Ultimately, the debate was not just a competition, but a platform for students to develop their communication skills and broaden their perspectives. The event concluded with awards recognizing the best speaker, best team, and best rebuttal. The debate left the audience with much to ponder and demonstrated the intellectual capabilities of the senior students of the school.
