Demo discs were the exact opposite of everything you mentioned. I think they were always free as part of some type of promotional material. A completely harmless and carefree way to try a game before buying. Games rarely have demos at all these days; they'd rather pay some "content creator" to play the game early and make some videos while saying nice things about it.

I had this and tons of demo discs when I was just 7 years old. I had tons of Interactive CD Sampler Volumes, Jampack Vol. 1 and 2, and tons of PlayStation Underground Jampacks. I remember living in our silver bus during a cat 2 hurricane. I spent most the hurricane just playing my demo discs.

I was in 2nd grade in a brand new city when this came out. I was trying to explain to the kids in class the sheer terror I felt over that P.E trailer, they had no clue what I was talking about. I used to run around the house re-enacting the helicopter scene with my toy helicopter. I never did play the actual game. My parents bought me Spyro and The Rugrats thanks to this disc. I thought I was so cool for having that system. Ah man…the young, naive and innocent days. Gone too soon.

I got this demo with my PS1 and got hooked on MGS right then. the background music I put on my PS1 classic when I modded it. I have a huge collection of PS1 demo disc and this is the one that started all. I love the fact you can play a few minutes of a game and then switch.

For the NFL game, you could remove the disc while playing and it would allow you to play the whole match between the packers/broncos. Instead of just the first round.

This was how I was introduced to MGS my favorite game of all time. I had no interest in playing it until my father who is my hero said he tried this really cool “spy game” on the disc. So I gave it a shot and was instantly hooked. Had to wait like a year to get the full game though. I also tell my dad about this and he has no recollection because he’s not a game guy lol
