This ride was so educational. I remember riding this and it got me interested in the future, space travel, ideas about growing crops in the desert, etc. Now all that is actually happening or being experimented in reality. Now the new rides aren't educational at all, and if they were, the kids now wouldn't be interested or willing to ride them. Times have changed... For the worse IMO. However, I am not saying all kids are like this, but I have noticed the majority of them. Another example is Test Track. It explained some real-world tests cars go through before making it to production (road tests with the German and Belgian blocks, ABS Braking, corrosion test, etc) and showed riders what it was like to test cars. The new Test Track has none of that... Design a CGI car and all the ride does is "vroom" around in darkness showing which CGI car "won." People who have rode both the new and the old will know what I'm talking about. So, in my opinion, it's no wonder why some kids there days don't have an interest to learn.
@m3chan1zr9 жыл бұрын
+MrWonka The comment I made was just merely my opinion. I learn more and get the idea that innovations can be made more so during lectures than the "hands on" approach you described. everyone is different, and I learn better with lectures. that's just me.

Perfectly said. I cringe on Test Track 2.0 today as it is simply a video-game, dumbed down, non-real world applicable fantasy where they slapped screens with neon lights and CGI scenes over the original.

@NxTTxT9 жыл бұрын
Anthony Studios It's not that Disney didn't see it. It was an immensely popular attraction that had a solid story, incredible innovations and proposed revolutionary ideas in technological progress. Disney knew its potential. There were simply too many factors and issues surrounding it like structural problems, no corporate sponsorship for like 6 years, and they couldn't update the attraction regularly as well. Missions Space was new, it introduced a new ride technology that was relatively more popular and it was financially a better idea to just completely get rid of Horizons and replace its pavilion. It's sad, this is a very positive and innovative ride, but the facts are what they are. Even so that just makes it sadder. Many deceased Epcot attractions have their problems stemmed from corporate sponsorships dropping the ride and it's so depressing.

Thank you for this upload. It really brings back some childhood memories. Epcot was the most fascinating experience when I was a kid. Such a bright and vibrant vision of the future. Sad to hear that Horizons is no more. The last time I was in Orlando was back in 1990 right after Universal Studios Florida opened. It was the last family vacation we had before my parents divorced. I'd like to go back to Epcot sometime soon, even if some of the older attractions aren't around anymore.

I mean, I went on all the other ones like Universe of Energy, Test Track, Wonders of Life, Living Seas, etc., but not this? What? Honestly, I really hope they bring it back to the old horizons look or something, cause if they brought back Captain EO, then they can do the same for this.

Late 30's. I don't know if it was "popular," but for those of us who were fans it was special. The buildings early 1980's slant architecture. The interior design with the robotic figures, the giant Imax screen in the middle of the ride, choosing how you wanted the ride to end by space, land, or sea. And, last but not least the soundtrack. Not only was it downright perfect, it was to positive as Bush & Cheney were to negative.

Okay, I admit. THIS they should've kept. It's a real treat for the eyes and gets your imagination thinking about the future. Kind of like Star Trek. If there's anything wrong with this, it's that maybe it should've been a bit shorter. Like, cut six minutes or something

It's a shame you can see here in 1998 how the ride is breaking down and under maintained. The dad's legs on the upside down stationary bike no longer move. The space crystal in the science lab is no longer moves and lights up. Little details like that are lost on later audiences due to disney's lack of care toward one of its greatest rides. I guess losing the GE sponsorship just accelerated the end.
@retrikstudios90258 жыл бұрын
Disney didn't care. The only reason the reopened Horizons in the first place was so that there was an attraction besides Wonders of Life open in Future World. GE didn't want to sponsor an outdated ride and nobody else did either. So they were forced to close Horizons due to operating fees. Now there is a much worse quality ride in its place because they were too lazy to pay for the 10 million rehab of the pavilion. BUT somehow they could afford that which was 10x more than the rehab. Once Test Track opened it was obvious Horizons was done for.
@retrikstudios90258 жыл бұрын
Lizzy The Geeky Wonder I made that comment quite a while ago but it is still basically correct. Disney could have corrected the structural problems but it wouldn't have been worth it because of the cost. Horizons was very expensive to maintain aswell so it just wasn't worth the hassle for them. Mission Space was just a cheaper alternative.
@retrikstudios90258 жыл бұрын
I never said you're wrong. There are so many different aspects to Horizons' closure it just seemed like a logical business decision. I don't think any of us will truly understand.
