Tesla charging doesn't have to be complex or confusing, and it's easier than you think. In this video I will explain how to charge you Tesla Model 3 from home, but it also applies to any electric car charging.
I'll look at the Tesla charging cables that come with the car as well as the home charging set-up I have which means I can charge my Model 3 from the solar panels on my house for free. Admittedly that's relying on the sun being out in the UK, but sometimes it's not too bad.
Don't forget to use the link below if you switch to my energy supplier, that gives a rate of 5p/kWh overnight.
Here is the UK OLEV grant information that I mention in the video:
www.gov.uk/gov...
The key features of the Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme are as follows (Correct August 2020):
The grant is a 75% contribution towards the cost of one chargepoint and its installation up to a maximum of £350 (including VAT) per household/ per eligible vehicle for installations that take place on or after the 1st of April 2020.
At the time of my installation the grant was £500, so if you are watching this video, always check the latest grant information, as it's likely to decrease over time.

Another great video but when I saw all the puns I thought that your channel was going into terminal decline. Still, I wasn't phased and didn't want to be negative. It's worth noting that the charging rate starts to tail off as you approach your specified maximum so it's worth increasing your time estimate to account for that. Being an electric vehicle, you might also want to provide some information on preheating the car (and battery conditioning) using the departure time settings while the car is still plugged in. Maybe another topic for your video series. Looking forward to the next one.

Did Octopus give you an IHD 6 or a 4? They've told me Octopus Go doesn't work with IHD's and I'm wondering if that's true, in that the smart meter isn't sending the right tariff info to the IHD.
@TeslaTorque

Hi Joss, I had the In home display 4, they are probably right in the sense it doesn’t update the tariff info properly, but to be honest, I focus more on the kWh usage, and don’t really look specifically at home much money I’ve spent daily, as I can roughly work it out in my head. It will tell you your current usage. A friend just got the IHD 6 and it seems to work okay with Go (minus the correct tariff info)

For folks with Octopus go, it's official both the IHD 4 & 6 provided by Octopus don't work with the tariff. However I've just found an app called "Octopus Watch" which automatically calculates usage and cost. You can link the app directly to your account and it also gives you a massive advantage of you're using Agile. 👍

If you ever want to get out of an electricity contract early, I was actually told this method by Scottish Power. They advised me to change to a contract that has no cancellation/exit fees with the same company (the kWh rate is normally higher), then when they have transferred you, cancel it and you pay no fees pretty much next day. It was a very bizarre but helpful advise with SP as they hadn't been able to provide the service I needed, but equally said they would charge me to cancel? I think it was the woman on the phone being nice as opposed to company policy :) September would be brilliant and not long to wait!!

Will the Myenergi system work with a Tesla wall charger BTW any reason why you don't choose the Tesla Charger?
@TeslaTorque
@TeslaTorque 3 жыл бұрын
Hi David, the Tesla one they give you just plugs into a normal 3 pin plug socket. If you buy the Tesla one, I believe it's not "smart" and you'd rely on the settings within the Model 3, so it wouldn't work with my solar panels. You could use a 3 pin plug, a smart plug and an app to link it all together to only charge with the sun, but it wouldn't adjust. This seems the best way to charge with solar panels.

Have you thought about a power wall? Would the power wall be powerful enough to charge the Model 3 (full charge). Great content mate. Subbed. 👍
@TeslaTorque
@TeslaTorque 3 жыл бұрын
Yep, so I have looked at a power wall. It does charge the model 3 no problem there, economically though I can't justify it at the minute. My electricity bill is tiny as it is, so payback would be like 25 years. My energy comes from solar and green sources, so feel no benefit to the environment, so not considering it. I might if prices drop and capacity increases. But I think look at your energy use and work out payback time, as households with big bills it might be worth it. My payback on my solar panels was 8 years and they have now paid for themselves, so that was worth the investment

Very informative. Many thanks. If you order the electrician & charger fix first and then think about solar later, can you get the solar to car connection easily sorted ?
@TeslaTorque
@TeslaTorque 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Ram, if you have a Zappi it will use any onsite generation, you just need to link it the main supply to your house and it will notice any electricity that you are exporting and take that and put it into the car. So it won't matter how you generate it, it will take excess and use for charging. So you can add solar later, and potentially other onsite generation as well, it's not limited to a specific type.

Can you program the charging to start after midnight when the rates are cheaper?? Is this in the cars software? Or do you need the Tesla charger?
@TeslaTorque
@TeslaTorque 3 жыл бұрын
There is the option in the Model 3 to schedule a charge. So you could use the 3 pin that come with the Tesla and charge that way. You can choose to do it through the charging settings on the model 3 centre console. Annoyingly you can’t do it through the app. It also will continue to charge until it reaches its charge limits. So if you wanted to take advantage of the 4 hour cheap window. You’d have to work out a limit that would be reached in around 4 hours. But I have an inkling V11 of the Tesla software is about to drop and with it a new app which will be completely revamped.

Hi, I've got 4k solar and Zappi. I'm looking to do the same or similar to you where I basically just want to plug in and walk away. My plan is leave the car plugged in over the weekend and have it charge from the sun when possible. Then during the week at night (octopus go) if needed have it charge. I don't need it to charge every night ( say Wednesday) just so I have enough to do 300 miles a week. Do you think having it on eco plus with a timer on Zappi set to Wednesday 00:30 until 04:30 would work? I'm wondering if it would be clever enough to charge on that Wednesday if I've got it set to charge only on eco+ all the time? Or will I have to keep changing it and tell it to charge that night? Thanks
@TeslaTorque
@TeslaTorque 3 жыл бұрын
Hi John, Yep. The Zappi basically set to EcoPlus will only charge from the solar panels unless you choose to boost it in some way. The boosts consist of manual where it will boost by a certain amount, say 10kWh that you pre-set; smart which will have it charge to a certain amount by a set time, say 80% by 8am when you want to leave for work and will start at a whatever time it needs to achieve it; and then timed, which is what you'd want to do and set it to charge between 00:30 and 04:30, and you can simple choose which days of the week you want that to apply. You can even choose different times on different days if you wanted. It's exactly the same as a heating thermostat in that sense. I have mine set to Eco+ pretty much all the time and just control charging via the boost settings. Boosts automatically charges it at the maximum charge rate, so 7.2kW if your electrics are up to spec in the house.

Just scrolled through the comments to see if had been asked, the zappi will do 7.2Kw but when you are in the car you say its max is 3.8Kw. Is this still an issue with the v2 zappi?
@TeslaTorque
@TeslaTorque 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Graham, yes it will do 7.2kW, however when the electrician installed my electrics he only put a wire that could handle 32amps and hence the main fuse board has a 32amp fuse, which if it was just the zappi would be fine. But as I have the lights 5amp fuse, plugs, 5amp fuse and the zappi in the garage. Then needed to make the zappi fuse in the sub unit 20amps, to ensure total along the wire wasn't greater than 32. The wire to my garage was installed a year before my zappi, and the electrician reassured me it would handle a charger (turns out he didn't know much about chargers). So I've had to limit the zappi to 3.7kW. It's not been a major problem to be fair, I don't do massive miles and overnight on my cheap rate I can put about 16kWh into the car which is around 30% charge. It it gets annoying I can just upgrade the wire

@@TeslaTorque Hi - I have this same challenge, you did say you were going to do a part 2 video to explain this have I missed it? I did it through these guys: www.redmileenergy.co.uk The Grant has changed a little since I got it done, so it will be more expensive and obviously depends on the property. I'd previously had electricity put in my garage which did make the installation a little easier maybe, as I'd specifically said to leave space on circuit boards, etc for a charger to be added at a later date. Hope that helps though
@TeslaTorque
@TeslaTorque 3 жыл бұрын
Forgot to say, I had to shop around a lot until I got a quote I thought was reasonable. There was a big range, some as high as £2,000 - I think some electricians saw it was easy money from a point of view of, you own an expensive electric car, you are limited to only electricians that can apply to the grant, and probably will pay more for it. The guy that did it for RedMile was really nice, friendly and I felt like I trusted him (Tim was his name)

Great video. Was wondering if there is there any advantage to getting the official Tesla charger over the Zappi or other third party chargers?
@TeslaTorque
@TeslaTorque 4 жыл бұрын
Initially third party chargers didn't appear to "wake" the car from sleep to charge. So this was a problem when you say set the timer to start charging at 00:30 on the third party charger, as the car wouldn't wake to accept the charge. This was easily overcome as you have an option in the Model 3 to choose it to schedule a time to start charging. So you could just set both. (It was more a problem with the intermittent sleep for solar charging, as it wouldn't wake to accept the charge then). I believe the Tesla Charger would wake the car though. A firmware update, which I guess was an an update from Tesla seems to have resolved that. As the car starts charging whenever I start my charger, regardless of the sleep. The Tesla charger also isn't included in the grant (because it's not smart), but as the grant has been reduced to £350, and the Tesla charger isn't as expensive, this might not be as big a concern. Third party chargers seem to have better apps and programming features, but Tesla are reworking their app for a major overhaul, which may improve all these functions too. At the moment, I would choose a third party over Tesla, as the third party chargers seem to be more competitive, therefore they add more features through firmware and app updates than Tesla, due to the chargers being their main focus. Happy to take other peoples thoughts/experiences on this though?
