My biggest issue with the shipping culture is that it really tarnishes the concept of friendship. Like, two guys and two girls can't simply caring friends with one another that can show affection without fans making fanfiction about them.

Shipping in kpop reminds me SO MUCH of other cases like Harry and Louis ("Larry") from One Direction or Lauren and Camila ("Camren") from Fifth Harmony a few years ago. All of those members said that those shippers put a huge strain on their friendships and it stressed and annoyed them so much of constantly getting analysed so they started avoiding each other and drifted apart. That's why it's not just for fun, these kpop idols that we're talking about here are real HUMAN BEINGS and not just your little characters inside of your head. This behavior has real life consequences.

Winrina is the biggest ship on the girl group space, both by popularity poll ranking and number of fics written in the Korean fan fic space. Also inter-group ships are popular because companies themselves support it as it supports the group and makes fans more invested in the group (which means more content and merchandise will be bought and consumed). Capitalism is a hell of a thing.

fans like to ship the most popular members like V and JK, Jennie and Lisa, Karina and Winter (in Aespa's case I also think that SM participate by making them interact more on camera which just helps the fans's narrative). In the west the most popular ofc is between Harry and Louis which by the way affected the group as a whole negatively. Also Laurin and Camila in Fifth Harmony. I find the most disgusting to be with male idols because fan girls really have like a parasocial relationship with those three members. My friend went to PSYCHOLOGIST because of her obsession with Taekook. She literally imagined having a threesome with them or something. So I tend to believe that those shippers imagine being with the two members at the same time or something like this.

Inter group shipping is so so weird. Many old idols have said that before that these ships actually caused strains on their friendships with their members. Many of these ships sometimes even cause companies to force idols to stop interacting with each other.Since I’m a stay,I’ll give minsung as an example they’re close yeah but they clearly aren’t in a relationship 😭😭 I have acted this way with my friends and we had 0 feelings for each other. So for these “fans” to be saying this is so weird. Also the so called analysis videos are so weird like they literally say “omg they looked at each for a second they’re in love!” it’s like what are you talking about…

My thoughts are that intergroup ships is lowkey stupid, because people try and pull the "Well they can't be caught dating outside the group" as though the potential of a break up wouldn't be a massive deterrent itself, just imagine you are dating someone, break up with them and then you have to not only continue working with them, but also show physical intimacy and cute moments with them for the fans and if that weren't enough you have to then go home together and potentially even share a room. Like how awkward would this be.

im mlm so i feel like a have a perspective thats a little different from yours i see that for the most part, a lot of "fujoshis" (mlm fetishisers) found themselves in kpop and decided to spread their fetish there and just project onto idols to them, mlm is a fantasy and seeing male idols just being close to each other must mean that they're dating. it's basically just applying hetenormative ideals onto them. they tease each other and are close? they cant be friends, they must be dating!!! (sarcasm) its really out of stubbornness in comprehending the complexities that come along queer identities or just overall, the concept of romance and the way relationships differ from a couple to another no matter the genders implied in said relationship. it's just a very toxic way to approach love and relationships as a whole but they find themselves in an echo chamber normalizing their fetish and get defensive when you call them out for it just observe the way society imposes gender norms onto us, compare it to those fetishisers' weird ass shit and you won't stop seeing the stereotypes they push onto idols and just the really weird way they view gay men as a whole were humans too, not a spectacle and so are idols not an army anymore but i remember how jin once talked about disliking more fem nicknames being attributed to him and since those weird shippers were the majority of the fandom at the time, they just ignored him and kept pushing the "wife" ideal onto him could also be that they'd rather have them date each other than other people but who knows really, the controversial existence of "yaoi" and the way it's consumed is worth looking into it because it does dehumanize mlm rs and minimizes them to fantasies (unless were talking about bl made by my mlm men for mlm audiences, it's not that black and white either so you dont have to be mlm to portray that experience with respect and care) its just weird, idrk how to put my thoughts into words but i just felt like sharing my perspective as a guy who's.. well gay and in a rs lol, quite lengthy but ill just leave this here

Actually, Blackpink's biggest and most annoying shippers are Jenlisas (Jennie+Lisa). They are the ones who are always harassing the girl's friends or rumored boyfriends, to the point that even one of Jennie's friends had to delete a post of them together because some blinks theorized that they were dating, and of course, Jenlisas went to attack the poor girl. The big assumption that Blinks has about Rosé is that she is a lesbian who hates men (like Irene)... And if that end up being a false assumption, I know damn well that the Blinks will react like Mys did with Karina...

When the Karina dating "scandal" happened I was on twitter and I thought that guys were going to go ape shit and start to bash her and things like that, but not even one of them did, not even the weird ones that sometimes pop out said something about her other that she could do better and that, seriously I was waiting them to post images of burning CD's or photos like they did when Irene read a feminist book, instead the ones that did were the girls, a lot of the, were cursing on Karina for "being straight" and for "lying to them and to Winter" and most of them were serious and I saw a couple of burning photos images and "I'm not going to support Karina anymore" signs, even some girl from OMG did post something like that, so it shows that the delulus are everywhere. Also about the Shipping culture and your questions: K-pop (at least most groups) is marketed towards women, more specifically young girls and even children, so they tend to follow the things they want and feel confortable, boy that are not super masculine but soft and have child like features and apparencies (this happens with all boy bands at the point in SpongeBob there's the joke group boys that cry or the Simpsons has the "non threatening boys magazine" ), so that's why K-pop has no violence or sex (there's sexy concepts that are not marketed to them, closest thing is sexy empowered concepts and a lot of implicit things but not anything clear or direct) the prefer girls they consider pretty to emulate them or that they could have the fantasy of being close, being "friends" with and being in the group, IVE is the group that markets like that the most, and ILLIT too. But they prefer boy groups overwhelmly and that's why they make more (5th gen is the first gen that kind of broke that pattern but boy groups make more money overall) and well females in general are more empathetic and they tend to put themselves in the position of the people they read, watch and hear about, so male (or same sex in general) shipping is a "safe" outlet for those fantasies, as they put in the shoes of the characters or idols they like and fanaticize about the things they want to live, things they read or write about.

I really find it baffling how the winrina shippers reacted to the dating news. I didn't find them serious with the ship to begin with so when they hated Karina for dating a man I was honestly surprised they took it that far. I saw people mentioning how Winter must've been "crying at the corner" when someone posted about this dating news when in reality she probably fully supported them. Some of them are probably jokes but it gets really annoying when it's repeated over and over again

I agree with this so much but i would also add how important it is that many times companies also push this kind of shippy narratives between members which also kinda instigates and allows the fandoms to continue this kind of behaviours. In my opinion, as long as the idols themselves are alright with it and also have some say in whether they gon do it or not i don't really care. The fact is that i've seen so many of these artists get uncomfy with this kind of behaviours which is something important and kinda gets exacerbated by the fans behaviours. I personally just like my members to interact in any way, i don't really like thinking much of it. And if i've ever "shipped" them, it is never that serious, i'm always just joking around. I guess what i wanna say is don't take it too seriously and remember that they are real people with real feelings, just like all of us, so those kind of behaviours can really affect the real friendships (or if ever, relationships, whtver) that they have with their members.

There have been serious studies done about this phenomena, where they have listed the typical ships, like the most popular ship within a group is between the 2 most attractive and/or popular members of the group. Just FYI, Chaelisa shippers are nothing compared to JenLisa shippers, especially in 2019/2020. JenLisa KZbin videos seemed to take up a large percentage of Blink content on KZbin. And personally speaking, there was a tremendous amount of suspicious off-camera footage (when they didn't think there was a camera on them, but there was one). Even on vLives, there were times Jisoo had to pry them apart. There was a lot of video material for shippers to work with. Just type JenLisa off-camera and fanfic on KZbin, there is a crazy amount of it. Not saying it was real, but there was a lot of smoke in the vicinity. So you had to wonder if there was a fire.

for the boygroups this is my speculation, i genuinely think it stems from the fact the fans know they wont be able to have a real relationship with the members therefore the only thing they'll settle for is or resort to is shipping the members, this is entirely from the newer gen stans ive noticed because older stans shipped members from other groups together (not to say they didnt also ship members) im not against the lgbtq in any way but i genuinely think its because these fans are so young and cant handle their idols or want to see them in relationships other than this. other than that i definitely think the companies are aware of this and profit of selling this other fantasy to fans, isnt that the whole idea of kpop though? selling a fantasy to fans lmaooo, i mainly think its their companies trying to reach all kinds of fans and reach all audiences, i digress

I haven't finished the vid yet so idk if you mentioned this already but fans assuming an idol's sexuality is such a big problem when it comes to shipping these idols. It's ok if it's done in a joking way or a non-serious manner but some fans are really serious about it (e.g. the winrina situation) and they get disappointed or even mad when an idol dates someone or interacts with someone other than the one they're shipping them with. These fans would label idols gay and when they turn out not to be, they call it queerbaiting. They throw that word around carelessly when we should be focusing on actual queerbaiting! These fans are deceiving themselves. We don't know these idols personally and we are not qualified to talk about their sexuality as if we are sure about it. This can make idols really uncomfortable and people don't realize how unsettling it can be for every move of yours to be analyzed by crazy strangers who think that you're in love with your members. Again, I think it's fine if they don't take the ship seriously or if it's platonic. They could be gay but who are we to talk about it? This is just the "women and men can't be friends" problem all over again but with a different formula. Edit: unrelated but has anyone told you that you kinda look like vernon's sister? Lol idk if my eyes are deceiving me but you have similarities

i know i'm 3 weeks late watching this but i still wanna see if we share the same opinion on why boy groups have more intergroup shipping (as a former bg stan who's now a gg stan) there's a massive female audience for a lot of bgs and i notice a lot of the time it's the female fans (bts army being the best example) who ship them and i have 2 thoughts on this the first is straight/bi fans fetishizing gay relationships (mostly straight fans but i will give benefit of the doubt bc with that many fans surely not all are straight btw i'm bi as an umbrella) and the second coming from my own experience is comphet or just wanting representation (this coming completely from lgbt stans with comphet specifically being a lesbian/sapphic in general thing) basically i remember trying to convince myself then even tho i knew i liked women that i liked men more and i will admit i even wrote some of those cringey bts fanfics bc i wanted to convince myself it was cute/hot and i know i'm not alone in that (i ended up realizing i'm a lesbian last year it took me 7 years knowing i'm queer to accept it abd i feel much better) but some of it like the more tame side i have no doubt it comes from wanting representation but those stans specifically don't get upset when their faves aren't gay ofc and are the ones least likely to write hardcore fics from my experience and then when you see the gg side of things there's a lot more male stans (but also still plenty of female stans) and the ones who are gay are more comfortable in their sexuality generally speaking and bc of that there's less projection onto the idols and ofc there's still going to be those straight men who fetishize sapphic relationships but there's nowhere near as much of them but you do still see it in bigger fanbases like blackpink and aespa i haven't really seen it in mid-tier/nugu gg fandoms but still see it with bgs on mid-tier not sure about nugu bgs another thing i think could be a contributing factor is when you see 2 guys together and they do anything so much as hug there's ppl who think they're gay and then 2 women could be literally kissing on the mouth and those same ppl will go "oh how cute they're besties" (yes this is very common we even have comics written about it that are shared in lgbt spaces with sapphics going "yup i've been there") so i wonder if that carries over to kpop that much those are my thoughts coming from my experiences so now imma unpause the video and see if you have the same opinion or if i overlooked smth edit: i didn't get into kpop through anime so i overlooked the bl stuff i'm actually the reverse just now dipping my toes into anime after listening to kpop since high school (i'm 24 now) but now that you mention it i see it edit 2: your second reason does go along with what i said in my comment tbh the whole not wanting to lose the idol so you ship them with another member goes along with the gay fetishization bc it's still straight stans shipping 2 members together bc they like the members and would rather see them together than with someone of the same gender as the fan and if you throw on top of that comphet you have sapphic stans do the same thing bc they don't want to accept their sexuality bc it gets drilled in our heads from an early age "you need to marry a man when you grow up and you need to be a good wife" and accepting yourself being different is hard so i do give grace to not only minors doing this stuff but potential sapphics as well aside from that now that i'm older i think this shit is weird

As a sapphic who once in the closet in high school but got shipped with a guy I had no interest in because they think we will "LOOK CUTE" together no other reasons when I asked them why, meaning it doesn't matter how our dynamics works as long as we're two relatively good looking m/f couple becoming a thing. heteronormativity effed people like me up. I hate being shipped in real life. I also understand why because it'll be cool to have more openly queer couples in the Kpop industry, but shipping members together that never confirmed they're dating is no way to go through life.
