We’re sharing some knowledge about how much of the falling Interior ceiling to remove, and then how to re-plaster it.
Note: Most times there is no need to remove the entire ceiling.
These joint compounds come in 20-pound bags of dry powder.
Yes, you have to mix with a drill in clean buckets.
Names of the most common joint Compounds are Westpac Fast Set or USG Easy Sand in this video: • Joint compound for dry... 2:26.
I show the two types of gypsums, Westpac and Easy Sand.
Personally, I can't feel or tell the difference between either one.
Keep in mind, that you can also you Structo-Lite, or lime basecoats with lime finishes, as in the videos below.
One of the most common causes of a buckling ceiling is movement or vibrations. This can be caused by slamming heavy wood doors or fastening hanging swings to the ceiling joist under the stucco.

I had a painting and repair business for 20yrs. I repaired many ceilings almost the same way you did. On really rough ceilings I sometimes would locate the ceiling joist and fasten 1 x 3 boards and then hang new 3/8" drywall on the ceiling. Taped and finished and then would paint it for them if they wanted. When repairing areas of ceilings and walls I prided myself on matching the textures on them. There's a talent to it and you have it keep up the great work!! It wasn't always about the pay but just seeing ppl so happy and surprised of how well the finish matched the exsiting. It really made me feel good. The best advertisement is word of mouth.

So many steps for such an easy repair. I have been a plasterer for over 30 years. I have never used any sort of "lightweight" plaster or mud mix. I have always used the hard Durabond "brown bag" it use to be pink with horse hair. Also, I see that you did NOT lap the mud between the lath. It is in my practice to Lap the mud through the gaps in the lath so that the plaster goes behind the lath and "hook" onto the back of it. Creating a stronger bond. Just a preference. Kudos on the video.

Can’t wait to see it done.

Excellent demonstration of a patch in! It’s a dying art of which I’m proud to be a part of! I lucked out about a decade ago getting employment with a library system that has several Carnegie funded libraries built around the turn of the 20th century. Lost of plasterwork to be done in those buildings! It feels good being a part of something trying to take care of classic architecture.

I did a similar size and type of ceiling repair a few years ago. I chose to install screws around the perimeter in the plaster that was going to be kept, just to make sure it didn't continue to separate from the lath. The screws, with a 1-1/4" washer, were countersunk into the plaster so they could be filled after. Some screws hit the joists and some just into the lath. The patch is now invisible, stable and still holding. I remember my neck aching for a couple of days. lol

I once had the outer walls of my house redone. The plaster guy that showed up was an old fat, short Italian guy with no shirt, a big tanned belly, missing teeth. a big smile and a bald tanned head. I thought the plaster company had sent some loser until the guy started to hand texture the walls in an almost effortless manner. It was beautiful and mind boggling. Nice fine work standards as usual Captain Kirk. There is one thing that i like to do before I slap any new stuff on and thats to give the edges of the old plaster a spray of clean water and then go around the edges, just like you did, and push in the new stuff so that it helps to strengthen the new stuff to the old. Like I said before on other posts I much prefer using the lime putty mortars and plasters because you have more time to play with it as it's just so versatile as well as less expensive. Love and hugs from the UK to you and the gang.

I was recently playing with some new lime mixes and on one panel of wooden laths I slapped on a haired 3:1 sea sand & lime and with the remaining mortar, on another panel, added some molasses and sawdust to the sea sand and lime. This was because I had been reading Millars book on Lime published in about 1890, it's a fascinating read about different mixes including the 1st experiments using cement. As expected the 1st panel was really fragile and useless, but the mix with the molasses is really strong and has set really well. I have even stuck some old iron nails in both panels to see if any rusting occurs, this is because when working on exterior stuff you have to use stainless steel screws and nails. I was also looking at cement mortars where glass balls were added to the mix and you get interesting light shows with that. My poor wife's eyes glaze over when I talk about lime and yesterday we met our new neighbours, and in their case, he is a cement specialist and his wife's eyes glaze over when he talks about cement, so there we all were, sitting out in the garden, drinks in hand, me talking to him and my wife talking to his wife and we all got on so well because his wife works with problematic teenagers as does my wife, what a small world. He also also worked for many years in different foundries traveling all over the globe to some really out of the way places because of his knowledge on foundry dynamics.

I know, I have mentioned this before but that looks a bit sketchy. That is a lot of weight on that flexible metal. And 20 minute mud put on that thick will take a while to dry. I would just go with drywall screwed to wood and finish with fiberglass tape and quick set. Less chance of cracking and just as fast. I do these repairs all the time. Mine are flawless and zero callbacks. To each his own.

Lids always dry fast. The old wood keys suck the moisture out of that hot mud. That is a rock solid repair. Drywall sucks. Roof leaks, water intrusion, drywall gets wet and it's ruined. It falls through the screws, turns into a smelly mold farm. Plaster is so much better.
@randythomas3478

The original plaster weighed much more that the 20 minute quick-set.... That said, the quick-set doesn't dry...it is a heat cure chemical process. I've been in the business over 45 years. This repair is most excellent. This is also approved on historical buildings too. Drywall patches are not. P.s. this guy is also a pro.

I'm a little surprised that you would use drywall "hot mud" over wood lath and suggest to others that this material is even remotely applicable to this type of repair. Setting type or any type of joint compound is not a product that will be strong enough to bridge over the gaps in the wood lath, especially in an earth quake prone area. Why wouldn't you use Struccto Lite directly over wood lath ,or even better, with wire lath added, and still better with added micro fibers? Or even use blueboard provided there's enough depth to existing old plaster?

This is incorrect and not a professional repair. I hate being critical, but "rendering" means you mix a loose fiber reinforced mortar and push it up in and form a 3/8 in bed. That should dry 24 hours. Then finish it with plaster of paris or a thin runny gypsum mix. A gypsum base is going to start falling out with the tiniest vibration. Trucks driving by, etc.

@@StuccoPlastering I do actually have a couple questions for you. 1. Can you mix 20 and 90 minute compounds to get 55minute? 2. The 2x2 plaster ceiling area I need to repair has some bubbling from past water damage (likely mold). I watched your video on neutralizing mold and blasting with a pressure washer. What would you recommend for a bedroom ceiling to keep mold from getting airborne? Spray bottle with bleach/water?
@StuccoPlastering
@StuccoPlastering 3 жыл бұрын
@@holamateo Good evening, my friend Holamateo. The question you ask will be in our video uploaded a day or two before this new year's eve. Soooo for now, I will say if you want 55 minutes to buy the 40-minute joint compound, the funny thing is if you use dirty tools to mix 90-minute mud, it can set in 15 minutes. Okay, this answered your 55 minute set time question.🍻 To neutralize mold, use acid-friendly stuff such as white vinegar in a spray bottle, or you can use Clorox bleach too, put in a spray bottle, add some water and spay away, wear a mask as bleach will make you cough out that toxin, that's normal. That's just your immune system saying, "dude, what the f@ck are you inhaling," I got to get rid of it now by coughing it out. Stop it! Lastly, when you see the wood lath, clean all the dust off as nothing adheres to dust. In the video I did today, I show using a vacuum to remove the dust, then me applying by paintbrush a bonding agent to the wood lath to make certain the plaster or joint compound adheres and help remove any hiding dust. Cheers, brother. KGP.

Hi godzi11amovies, the mud I am using is a compound, (Westpac's fast set) but it is not ready made, most ready made products such as mud's or mortars to set tiles are weak and don't last long. The product we used was in bags we added the water and mixed ourselves, prior to application. Best wishes, Kirk & Jason Giordano's DIY plastering network

Thank you for this video. Yours is the most helpful and much easier than some I have watched. I have an old house for sale and in sitting empty a part of the plaster ceiling near a window has come down. I have tried to find someone to repair it but they all want to take down the ceiling and replace it with drywall. I am going to use your method and do it myself. Good luck to me!

I did a plaster repair job for charity recently at a homeless shelter W/Life leadership sponsorship where they get members together from one, two or more teams We started early to get done whatever we could get done in a day. It's a really helpful & rewarding experience doing for others in need. It's kinda like what habitat for humanity does. Anyway we have leaders directing & supervising the entire project, painting, building or assembling shelves & stocking them, installing doors & windows, cleaning & scrubbing, We put bed bug mattress protection sealed covers on all the beds for in case of infestation, & so much more. Now me I was fixing a plastered ceiling of size that had loose plaster falling, as like you're doing here. We were limited to money, time, & professionalism. However we make do what we have to do in short time. Just like you 'I scored the plastered ceiling & wall area's that was badly crumbling & removed it exposing the lath. next I did not use plaster to go back with 'but instead cut drywall board to run it against the edges of the remaining plaster . I also used large, but skinning washers the size of old silver dollars of maybe an inch & a half or more in diameter w/a small center hole that a drywall screw would not slip thru. I screwed washers into most areas of any noticed & or any possible need to be reinforced of what remained behind if any . I then skim coated the washers w/20 minute mud & mud n taped all seams & applied a 2nd coat to that i& sanded to t nearly making it invisible after painting it. In any case it was a huge improvement & most appreciated by the men who sleeps their. lIt looks great. If so you want to find out more about life Leadership Go to wwwlifeleadership.com Please do me a favor & join my team #61341016. We can all make a difference & that's no lie Thanks

Have you ever used screws to re-attach the ceiling? I had a kitchen ceiling just like the one you all worked on.Albeit not as bad. it was cracking and falling. I didn't take any of it down. Instead I used screws all over the place to re-attach and contain it to the cleats. then I went over it with tape and mud. It's been about 2 years now and it still looks pretty good. It better stay looking good because it's my mom's house. Love your videos. Thank you so much and God bless you and your family.

Hi Richard Chavarria, yes, we have also used screws when tiny areas need to be reattached, especially if the ceiling has a really tough finish to match. Cheers, kirk giordano

Good morning again Viseral, sort of, if you mix most muds in a dirty bucket or drill paddle, you will lose half the workability time. For instance, 20-minute mud will now set in 10, or 60-minute mud in 30 and so on, a rule, depends on the amount of dirt involved. Live long and plaster Plastering tips and techniques

I just finished doing pretty much exactly the same thing you did but mostly walls and I used Structo-lite. You probably would not be impressed with that product. 185 year old lime sand hair plaster walls and I needed to have gentle undulations. I wait a bit and spray water on to float it into a slurry and then final smooth it. I do the perimeter blending similar to your technique in this video. I could never hold a candle to your skills, but I feel better about my efforts after seeing you doing similar.

Good morning, Paul Briggs my fellow plasterer. Structo-lite is one of my favorite products of all time.🤔 40 years ago they used to sell it in 80-pound bags. we used to apply it in schools and hospitals for all the benefits, that was back when I was an apprentice. The 3 to 5 hour cure time was never an issue as I had additive to make it set in ten minutes if I choose that time for it to set.😉 I do make mention of structo-lite in the description of being the most used for good reason, it's the best. However; In my works many ask for alternative products, that set faster, thus this video.🕺🏻💃 Our unique plastering Tip: all subscribers or anyone who stumbles on our channel with a question, type it into our Stucco/Plastering channel, and like magic, a video will appear to explain how it's done. This feature is miles ahead of any plastering forum. www.stuccoPlastering.com www.bayareaplastering.com
