This is the extended version. You should watch the video, which is the shorter version, but it interprets the track brilliantly. The live version from their on line concert was also cool.💜

Solid interpretation! I really enjoyed this trilogy of songs from BTS (1. Intro: Persona by RM, 2. Interlude: Shadow by Suga, 3. Outro: Ego by J-Hope). It guided the 'Map of The Soul: 7' album really well from one section and idea to the next. It's always fun when they dabble in literature and psychology or just larger concepts to inspire the music. This time it was Carl Jung's theories. It's all really interesting to dig into the secondary layers under those songs and how each member chose to tackle it through music and their own personalities.

This song is also one of my favorites, the album its in is a constant theme of the inner self, this song is my favorite in that one. The analysis is exact way i see it, and i think Yoongi wrote it exactly that way. Everyone has that shadow within themselves, its how we face it that defines us as people.

Was not expecting anime references but loved the comparisons you drew. You're very thoughtful!! This song was on BTS' album Map of the Soul: 7, and BTS was exploring Jungian concepts of persona, shadow, and ego. I think the members of the group, including Yoongi, were really thinking about their identities as artists and as celebrities. You can see Yoongi grapple with these concepts in Daechwita as well - with the killing of the evil king (the shadow or the version of Yoongi he doesn't want to be).

I cannot express enough how much i love this song and how genius it is in its delivery. I could write essay upon essay about how it is the best representation of the Jungian shadow in popular media by far. But I won't. I wrote enough long comments today. Fuck I love this song much 😭 I feel blessed it exists in my same timeline.

I made a discourse on how Yoongi's music focuses on conflict phase more than the solution... that's why the common answers from army and even from me when asked how yoongi's music helps us is, he let's us "acknowledge what we feel" and "help process our emotions"... Among the rapline his alter-egos is a clear split SUGA | AGUST D (multiple subalter-egos that's performing the battle of his thoughts) .. SUGA and AGUST D grows at the same time but separately...but they are all part of Min Yoongi combined.. On the contrary, Namjoon's alter ego is in evolution form, from Runch Randa to RapMon to RM and never looked back.. while hobi is a literal jack in the box jhope as the main and still jhope but dark that pops out occasionally..

This was a Suga of BTS track. It's from the Map of the Soul 7 album that explored Jung's Map of the Soul...there's also Intro: Persona by RM and Outro: Ego by J-hope. They also have Black Swan that explored losing your passion for your art and On which is basically about meeting life's challenges head on, etc etc etc.

Fully agree with your interpretation! I love this song, it’s one if my favourites. He really is super honest - like you said, it’s a dilemma that’s really hard to solve, since both sides of the argument have a point. “I am you and you are me, we are one being and sometimes we’re gonna clash” probably sums the whole thing up.

The song has layers. The production is sheer Suga genius. The lyrics hit so honestly. But the way he took the assignment which was each rapper took an old sample/beat from a previous song and interpreted a part of the Jung concepts. I love how he showed the shadow part of us and the conversation this part has and how we must accept that part of us as well. Ugh I could dissect this song for days. The MV is another one that is Suga story board genius as well for all these layers especially incorporating art metaphors like the Kapoor art wax piece and how moving through life we leave an impression behind the Basquiat art etc.

I think you are on point. I really dig this song because it describes the conflict/duality of success at such a high level. It also, on a more micro level, describes the internal conflict all people must have in order to be a full being. We all have a dark, shadow, side that needs to be embraced. The album this is on is "Map of the Soul 7"and all of the guys have solos. It is an amazing piece of work. Inspired by Jungian theory of personality development called the Map of the Soul. Psychologist Carl Jung posits that the intersection of the light and dark is where the ego, or self, lives in each person. And please call him Jung, pronounced like young. It is a personal pet peeve of this once psych major to hear his name with a hard J. Anyway, when you get to the album make sure you listen to the songs in order. They tell a story. This is just another reason this nerd digs BTS so much. They push us to think about our own being and explore how we fit together, and more importantly, how to be a better person and community. Getting off my soap box now. Thanks for sharing this with us all. BTW, I am now predicting when you are going to say "what are we doing here cuzz". Love it.

Yo I'm so glad you caught how deep and rare this song is simply on a conceptual level. You always have interesting shit to say about the songs, that's refreshing! If you wanna really dig deep into the construction of Shadow you need to listen to Intro: O!RUL8,2 (Intro: Persona, Interlude:Shadow and Outro:Ego respectively include sounds from the intro of the school trilogy albums). Musically this is one of my top BTS songs. Suga, El Capitxn and Ghstloop made a masterpiece!

Great paraller with anime, Ichigo and hollow like wow, Suga and Shadow yeah great interpretation, you must to accept dark side to life in full if not you will only fight with yourself or be hateful or be miserable, like it was said in last part: we are one we can't break it of, you are me I'm you.... Ahh Yoongi is so down to earth, and with BTS position they could do literally anything everything and they could get big headed but no they stay true to themself, and if course they know they have more power and ways then most people but they know it isn't everything and there are more important things in life then money fame and power.

I agree with your analysis of the song. I have nothing to add. You have two songs left now from Suga's concert setlist. "Seesaw" and "Never Mind". For "Seesaw" I want to suggest that you react to the live version from the Love Yourself Tour, which is based on the studio version. I just want you to see the difference between the original performance from that tour and the one in his solo tour.

I had always interpreted the hook as Suga saying that they are so big now that he's scared to be a star (don't let me shine) but he's also scared of failing (don't let me down) and also terrified of getting even bigger than they are now (don't let me fly)...I enjoyed your interpretation too and tried to picture Suga actually saying that (and failed hilariously) -- by the way, you get such a fun & silly giggle over hearing the rappers say naega/niga, you should give PSY's song "That That" a listen... Suga produced it and features on it and his opening verse raised quite a few eyebrows among new reactors who didn't understand that the Korean language has similar-sounding words and ARMYs had to run around explaining like mad in comments sections....TBH I actually sorta wonder if Suga did the line like he did on purpose, to bring awareness of the Korean language to a larger audience so that the common misunderstanding could be addressed and finally buried as a non-issue (I think you might understand what I'm talking about when you actually see the MV to 'That That')

9:05 You could think of him saying this to himself heartlessly or sarcastically. He also does a track called Ugh on his tour that you haven't covered. It's a BTS track. There's also a DKDKTV explain vid. And this same sentiment that you're sharing, about people telling you that you have no right to complain about people saying shitty things about you cause your famous so you have no right to complain is addressed there and they basically think it's bullshit ("Ahem Ahem Ahem"...bascially the sound people make to tell you to shut the f up and stop complaining). He also addresses it with HUH, "What the shit you think you know about me". Did 20yo Suga really know what he was getting into and why does being famous give someone else allowance to be a totally shitty human being. Korean internet gossip and cancel culture is about as toxic as it gets and there have been multiple Idols who have committed suicide in the last handful of years, the latest one happened the literal week that D-Day was released.

I guess I've only really listened to the Official MV... I think the hook will be interpreted based on what our own shadows are, but I took it as...there's this part of me that's scared of all this attention and expectation. What if I can't perform at the level I'm expected too. This is too much pressure even though there's a part of me that wants everything that comes with it, or the validation...but please take the focus off the me that feels really small, anxious and insecure. Haha, but I'm now seeing that this would be my shadow. I know Suga's dealt with social anxiety and can be a little reclusive at times so I felt it might be more about that than fears of turning into an asshole...but then again there was that angry part of him that we saw in Daechwita so that could be it too.
