Hey Ross, thank you for your great and inspiring tutorials! I have a question regarding your metronomes. I noticed that in earlier videos you used a Tama RW 30, nowadays you seem to use a Boss DB 90. For which reasons did you change? Do you still use the Tama? I use an old Korg Beatlab and I don‘t like the harsh sounds at all, so I am looking for an alternative. DB 90 would be quite an investment though … Keep on the great work!

I’m really happy you are enjoying my channel. Thanks! I don’t still use the old Tama metronome because I sold it when I went to the Boss. The Tama was also good but the Boss had everything so I just minimized my collection of gear. Nowadays, it’s a balance between using the Boss when I’m at home and an iOS metronome app or two when I’m out. I think I got the Boss for a really low price on sale so I’m happy with it for the money I paid. However, if you look at the price now and think “it can’t be worth that”, don’t get it. A $5.00 mobile app can really get you the most amazing metronomes to ever exist in my opinion. So if you consider that, physical metronomes aren’t so competitive. Having said that, I love having one. It’s like how some people love having a physical calculator. Try searching online in a 2nd hand marketplace for Boss metronomes shipping from Japan. They are long lasting machines and there’s supply enough that it would be way cheaper than a new one in retail.

Hey Ross, thanks for your quick reply! I use the pro metronome app and really like it, but the phone battery drains quickly, and lately I also use the live bpm app to check the tempo when playing with a band. That‘s quite a back and forth between apps then which I don‘t like. So I prefer having a hardware device, also for practice. Thank you for advice!

Love this video, excellent grooves and excellent playing! The Cajon also sounds great BTW. How did you position the Audix D6 and I5 for these recordings?
@rosslmccallum5 ай бұрын
Thanks heaps! i5 is pointing at the hands from my left at a 45deg angle. Placed maybe 50cm or something away. I don’t know for sure the distance (enough space that I’m able to play comfortably). D6 is sitting at the sound hole on the back and kind of flush with the back of the cajon in terms of distance away. Not exactly inside or outside.

Hi Ross. I'm 56 and want to protect my back while playing cajon. I can use good posture, but do you have any thoughts regarding tilting the cajon? I've seen tilt stands, or people just tipping the cajon on the back two feet. I'm wondering if this diminishes the bass tones, or if you think it can help one's back health to tilt the instrument? Thanks! Bryan.
@rosslmccallum5 ай бұрын
Hi Brian, I’ve had good experiences titling the cajon for comfort without losing any sound quality. A friend of mine has a kind of titling stand their cajon sits on and that works great for them. I don’t think there are any noticeable changes in terms of sound so you should give it a try and see if feels better.

@@rosslmccallum Thanks Ross! One last question: For the Meinl Subwoofer Cajon I own, I'll be running it through a portable amp for coffee shop type gigs, just to add a bit of effect and perhaps a bit more volume if necessary, while playing with a guitarist/singer. I want to get the right microphone, which I'll place on a short stand a foot or so (?) in front of the Cajon. Do you favor any specific microphones? I've heard that the SM57 is generally okay? Thanks in advance! Great KZbin channel, by the way!
@rosslmccallum5 ай бұрын
@@bryanubaghs406 I think you probably can’t go wrong with a SM57. I’ve only heard people say how reliable it is. I’m using the Audix stuff because I wanted to try something different and my i5 is similar I believe to the SM57.
@bryanubaghs4065 ай бұрын
@@rosslmccallum Awesome! Thanks man. I'll check out the Audix stuff. Pretty sure it will be either that or the 57. The nice thing about the Subwoofer Cajon is that the low end is pretty amazing even without an amp. The combination, with a little delay and other effects can be very cool along with some acoustic guitar. Take care! Bryan
