3 years ago I was a chronic diabetic with A1c of 11.7. Down to 5.9 in 3 months, and 5.3 in 6 months. Completely normal at 76 years of age. There are so many other health benefits like improved blood pressure, neuropathy and shooting pains gone, greatly reduced triglycerides, reduced stress, regular heart rate, reduced weight, increased energy. It seems outrageous that all this can be achieved with one meal a day low carb diet and no drugs. More power to you doctor, your research will be a breakthrough for millions of people.

My sister had Covid and lost her sense of taste and smell and i told her to do a fast and next day she almost got all her sense of smell and taste back. It makes sense because Covid damages cells and causes inflammation and fasting causes autophagy which is anti inflammatory and repairs cells and resets the system.

Food industry doesn’t care about your health and the healthcare system doesn’t care about your food. Big Farma, however, has a plan to check your symptoms from the very genetically modified foodstuff they also help create. A vicious cycle of greed.

Big Pharma just hates comments like these .... after all, they have spent decades and billions of dollars to develop drugs that are ineffective that Docs are brainwashed into prescribing .... rather than taking the time to listen and learn about the healthy safe ways people can greatly improve their health - that does not require a single prescription.

@Peter Dykes I'm on the same path as you. Diagnosed last month w/ A1c of 11.5 and went to low carb with 6hr restricted eating window. After 3.5 weeks I got my glucose down to normal level (avg daily 124 mg/dL). Woke up this AM w/ fasting level of 98 mg/dL. Will advance to OMAD next week and try to throw in a 3-day water fast every other week. Anxious for my lab results in a couple of months from now.

Well I'll throw a data point in this discussion. 59 years old and I went to an 18:6 intermittent fast and ate the same foods. 9 months and 52 pounds later I would say it worked in my case. In addition it got me off both blood pressure meds and my triglyceride medication. Best thing I ever did. In all respect I also went to OMAD after a few months. Once you adjust your new metabolism and ghrelin is tamed down 3 and 4 day fasts are both beneficial and easy.

I did lose 4 stone back in 2016 or 17. doing 18 to 23 hr fasts. then my hormones changed. now I can't lose any! I did proper keto recently, measured my blood sugar with finger prick tests. even tried an implanted disc ( CGM). Did keto/ OMAD, with 3 day fasts for 8 weeks, and 2 days fasts for another7 weeks, that worked, I was 9 stone again. I'm heavy now tho. I eat primal, paleo and really organic/ home grown, meat fish fowl eggs, berries nuts seeds veg. 2 meals usually only. avoid hi sugar fruits/ veg. Fast til WHEN ( when hunger ensues naturally). blk organic coffee til then. 🤷🏼‍♀️ hormones i guess. ps my friends son just died aged 25. no cause.

I decided to do OMAD years ago because I just could not lose weight. It's like magic, I'm still doing it and have no desire to ever go back to 'normal' eating. 52 year old female, physical job 50 hrs a week. All the little health issues are gone. Never hangry. Just eat my dinner at night, organic fatty meat and veggies with butter. Don't have time to go to the gym so yoga at home. Saving a lot of time on cooking and shopping and cleaning up. I eat as much as I want. If I feel any hunger during the day I drink water. I don't gain weight. I've also been doing this to prep for menopause, no symptoms yet. Everyone else my age on prescription meds, I have no reason to see a doctor. I don't worry about reading labels, I don't eat food with ingredient lists. I've worked in healthcare in the past, I have no interest in a long slow death. No junk food is worth that, and I've lost any interest in eating that way anyhow. I never thought I'd be able to say no to chocolate lol.

I've been intermittent fasting all my adult life - starting in college, I did it for 2 reasons, 1) I was never hungry in the morning or afternoon and felt it was silly to eat when I wasn't hungry 2) The second reason I continued not eating anything during the day - was simply because I felt BETTER when not bogged down with digesting food all day. After all, all these energy drinks aren't being used because people feel "great" mid day - it is because most people feel tired and groggy mid day due to blood sugar swings. I first felt validated when the book The ZONE came out years ago and blamed most of people's serious chronic health problems - on frequent Insulin swings. I knew enough even back then that going 18 hrs a day without eating or drinking anything with calories - was a great way to avoid those insulin / sugar swings, Then many years later I was pleasantly surprised when these "INTERMITTENT FASTING" studies came out ... and then even more pleased that the more it was studied - the more health benefits were discovered and it became a worldwide phenomena because studies kept revealing that going long periods of time without eating was not only beneficial - BUT HEALTHY! And instead of becoming just a meaningless "FAD" diet - it has now turned into a permanent lifestyle for millions of people who have had amazing results - not only with weight loss - but with an overall improvement in health and energy. FYI - My initial goal was not to lose weight - but more about avoiding eating when I wasn't hungry. I later noticed as I entered the workforce - that my energy levels remained constant during the day - unlike my co-workers afternoon slumps. I have now entered the newest phase of this "Fasting" lifestyle .... and try to do 48 hrs fasts several times a months that can result in many amazing health benefits including Autophagy - the last time I tried a 48 hr Fast, aka "prolonged fasting", I noticed my vision actually improved and has remained so. Longer fasts can also jump start weight loss - and notice improvements in chronic problems after fasting. Win - Win. One of the best things I have enjoyed - is the Vindication and Validation for all those years of people looking at me like I was crazy when they asked me why I wasn't eating during the day - and I responded that I just felt better and I was never really hungry during the day. Now those people are looking at me as if I was some visionary who figured out long ago before the 'IF' studies came out - how beneficial going without food 16-18 hrs a day turned out to be.

I started intermittent fasting with keto just over 12 months ago. I now regularly eat 2 meals per day within a 6 hour time frame. I rarely eat anything other than natural, wholefoods. I'm never overly hungry. Supplementing with D3 / K2 (amongst others) is essential in my view. I also exercise regularly. The last 12 months of my life have probably been my healthiest. I'm male, unjabbed, 58 y/o, 5ft 10ins and weigh around 165lbs (I was 190lbs a year ago). I go to the gym 4/5 times a week and have plenty of extra energy to play with my 2 foster kids and 3 grand children.....................

Thank you both, gentlemen. I am a 75-year-old man living in the Colorado Rockies. I cycle every day for varying distances, today was 28.5 miles, and most days for only 4 to 8 miles. I was diagnosed with T2D in 2014 and had a couple of arterial interventions in 2018. The prescribed medicines did not sit well in my digestive system, so after some research, I plunged into the Intermittent diet. Today I eat once a day within 2 or 3 hours and fast the rest of the hours. I am very comfortable with this programme and shall continue it ad mortem. The food is m mostly within the ketogenic parameters. I do cheat every now and then when with friends or family gatherings. According to the physician who checks me once a year, I am in good health and do not need to monitor my glucose levels anymore. Be well, both of you and thank you for doing something really transcendental for the general public. Paddy Flynn.

Many years ago when I stopped eating during the day while I was in college because stopping to eat was too big of a hassle ... I quickly found out I was never hungry during the day - and enjoyed eating in the evenings with my friends much more. I continued on with it, because like you - even though I didn't need to lose weight - I thought it was a great way to 'NOT gain weight' as it seemed pointless to eat - when I wasn't hungry, since I had no desire to eat during the day. To my surprise by my 2nd semester I had lost 7 lbs without realizing it ... so when everybody complains about the "Freshman 15" referring to how many 1st year college student GAIN 15 LBS ... I had instead lost 7 lbs and didn't even notice it. And that's one of the reasons why I continued "not eating" during the day for the rest of my life - because even if I'm NOT trying to lose weight - just thinking of all those calories I am 'not' consuming everyday - that I would later have to diet to lose - - puts me a good mood!.

I have a virtually identical story to yours, just a bunch of years later, the trigger was becoming self-employed, and the time just wasn’t there. I also quit coffee and booze for the same reason. I soon noticed I was no longer hungry days. It has had an overall regulatory and calming effect on my metabolism, biome, mood, sleep. The matching critical requirement for myself has been low-impact but regular exercise (walking).

I started a keto diet about a year ago to deal with the onset of type2 diabetes. I also fast about one day every month. It's no hassle. Bacon and eggs, strawberries and cream, whole roast chickens and half legs of pork can fill you up quite a bit! My blood sugar levels are now normal and I'm off the medication. I've also lost around five stone in old money. My BMI is spot-on Agriculture has created a carbohydrate addiction in humanity. While a hunter-gatherer diet (plus cream!) might not be for everybody it certainly works for me. What you eat seems to count for more than how much you eat.

I have a similar experience going onto a low carb high saturated fat diet and I love having stable energy levels that I never had on a high carb diet, regardless of whether it was 'low GI' or not. I eat like my grandparents did, cooking with butter, enjoying cream, full fat gravy, full fat yoghurt, eating cheese and eggs, bacon, and the fat on the steak, along with lots of vegetables/salads. Sometimes it takes the body time to process over/ultra processed foods. If your diet consists of over/ultra processed foods 24 hours is good to let that food settle completely in the body and start the break down process so that when you have to eat something after fasting it doesn't have a detrimental impact on your bodies health. Eat fast food and junk give your body ample time to fully digest it and not just what is recomended to digest NORMAL foods.

So glad this Zoe Intermittent Fasting study is happening. My husband and I have already made the change. I have been clean keto and time restricted eating for 2 year and lost and kept off 15kg and am now doing it for ever - so easy, all my health markers have improved and I eat the most delicious food, make my own kombucha etc. My husband also went clean keto with intermittent fasting a year ago and has lost 45kg and the diet change has backed off the autism spectrum disorder sensory issues and dialed them down to such a degree that he is like a totally different person who now experiences emotions that he did not before, including happiness. Imagine nor having ever experienced happiness until 59 years of age and all it took was a diet change. It's a beautiful, beautiful thing - not to mention that he now has excellent health (no more asthma, GERD, no longer pre-diabetic, perfect blood pressure, healthy cholesterol).

I'm 60 and healthy. Non Vx'd and not taking any pharmaceuticals. Been intermittent fasting for a few years. Lost over half a stone first off then got stuck (didn't have so much to loose in the first place). Just started a new system of changing the fasting for different days weekly. 4-2-1 = 4 days 17-18 hours fasting, 2 days non fasting, 1 day long 24 hour fasting. I've reduced my eating window to below 5 hours daily. I've now lost another 4lb's in 4 weeks. My main reason for fasting is the health benefits - reducing inflammation is my main reason. My personal experience is that this is the healthiest way to eat.

I am a 70 year old female. 5 years ago I started intermittent fasting. Mostly 18:6. I'm not rigid about it and adopted it as a lifestyle. In less than a year, I lost 60 lb, which was my goal. I still follow the principles of fasting, although I'm much more flexible. And have maintained my weight loss and have lost another 6 lb. My blood pressure has improved. My glucose level is now 4.9. My doctor checked my metabolic markers, and I have no evidence of metabolic syndrome. It is easy. It is free. It saves time, eating less meals and no snacks. I have more energy. I look better in my clothes. And I really can see no negatives. I try to avoid processed foods, but I did that before starting IF anyway. I'm amazed when people tell me that not eating breakfast isn't healthy. And I have to remind them of what I've accomplished.

I have been intermittent fasting since January 2020. I began mainly because I was not sleeping well, horrible reflux, and extreme fatigue. I also needed to loose some weight. I didn't looks weight fast at all, but definitely noticed inches. I definitely gained energy, mental clarity, and an overall better health. I have since lost about 20 lbs and 3 inches from my waist. My body likes being 145 lbs. Lol. This is truly the best thing I have ever done for my health. I have never changed my diet, only changed my eating window to 8 hours or less. Some weeks I do a 24 hour fast for spiritual reasons and feel even better after that as well.

I lost 160 lb - and have kept it off for 3 years running - with fasting and low carb eating. Reversed type 2 diabetes, high BP, and sleep apnea. The one thing I will say about fasting is that it is a mistake to assume fasting=calorie restriction. I ate all I wanted in a four to six hour window, even 3-4,000 calories and still lost the weight.

I developed sleep apnea around 7 years ago, whilst pregnant. I was a size 12 after my baby was born but the weight piled on due to tiredness and lack of diagnosis. Even now, my apneas are not under control after 3 years on CPAP. The Sleep Clinic has been rubbish during COVID and I had to learn how to adjust the pressure myself. They are ignoring what I've told them about my own experiments and claim it is now under control at 15.5 🙄 I had it up to 20 and never felt any better. So. I am going to try this. I have nothing to lose except some weight. I cannot exercise due to arthritis, which makes things much more difficult of course.

Throwing in my personal anecdote since I have tried many different eating/fasting programs since 2016: The "Personalized approach" that was mentioned here is definitely something I learned - people online praise the ketogenic diet and I tried it several times with my longest attempt lasting about 3 months. It did not work for me at all - I had very low energy, I couldn't concentrate on anything, had almost no sex drive, my gut was not cooperating with this diet as well since I would have periods of constipation followed by periods of diarrhea. I lost a little bit of weight since I kept my daily calorie intake at about 5-10% below may daily calorie burn. Through years of experimentation I found that what works best for me is either one or sometimes two meals a day - either just breakfast or breakfast and lunch, but no dinner. So you could call it "time restricted eating". I do not count my macros or calories and eat whatever I want. I found that if I have a big meal for breakfast, I will have a lot of energy, I will move around more, have more confidence and motivation and even though I'm lighter now than I was when I tried keto, it takes more calories to just keep my weight steady than what it would have taken me on keto. Also, I sleep so much better and wake up feeling great.

A few years ago I lost 4stone to get to a healthy BMI using calorie restriction and time restricted eating, but then wrestled with weight gain thereafter. Eventually transitioned away from processed food and crucially (for me) meat and dairy and embraced the whole plant foods though couldn’t afford organic except carrots! Took a few months to get used to it, but motivated by thinking about the environment and factory farming. No going back now, seeing clearly the way meat and dairy industry operates. It’s a bit like with the pharmaceutical industry; we have to do the research. I recommend Dr. Greger and Mic the Vegan for a dose of humour and science rather than pseudoscience.

Even though meat is expensive, I need very little else beyond free range eggs, cream, and leafy veg. Sauerkraut easily made with cabbage and salt. Also apple cider vinegar etc. Great videos on KZbin about home made products. It's easy produce most of what you need. However I am a stay at home mom so I know this helps... Wow, what a treat! I didn't expect to see my two favorite topics combine like this. Just some of the many benefits of fasting and a lower carb whole food diet on the immune system, blood pressure, blood sugar and anti-aging, all backed up by clinical data: Fasts from 36-96 h actually INCREASE metabolic rate due to norepinephrine release! Reflexes and short term memory are increased. Vitamin D plasma levels are increased, and vitamin D in turn increases autophagy! Fribrosis/scarring is reversed over time. The hunger hormone ghrelin lowers with extended fasting and rises from dieting. Thymus is regenerated, which suppresses aging and renews the immune system. Fasting stimulates phagocytosis, the ingestion of bacteria and viruses by the immune system. Blood pressure is quickly and dramatically lowered, which is very important for a good outcome with the current pandemic. Fasting increases nitric oxide, which has manifold postive effects like reducing arterial plaque. Weight loss from fasting only loses10% lean tissue and 90% fat compared to the typical 25% lean tissue and 75% fat lost when calorically restricting for long periods. Blood clotting is reduced and blood clots and arterial plaque are reabsorbed into the body. Blood sugar and insulin are lowered, allowing white blood cells to move more freely throughout the body and do their job. Ideal blood sugar is around 80. Some viruses activate glycolosis (the release of sugar in the body) and clinically it has been shown that decreasing glucose metabolism in the body weakens the influenza virus. When you move out of MTOR your body shuts down the building blocks of the cell which are used to produce organelles and proteins. This means the mechanisms needed by viruses to replicate are by and large unavailable when you are in a deeply fasted state. What breaks a fast? Anything with protein or carbohydrates in it will break a fast, though if the amount is tiny you will go back into ketosis very quickly. Most teas and herbs are OK. Most supplements and meds will either break ketosis directly or contain a filler that will. Does fasting lower testosterone? No, it raises it and helps build muscle by increasing insulin sensitivity! Fasts of several days will not affect short term female fertility and may increase long term fertility especially in women with PCOS. The hormone Leptin is an immunomodulator that keeps the body from attacking itself and obesity causes leptin resistance. Fasting very quickly reduces leptin resistance and leptin levels and one day of fasting can cut your leptin levels in half and gets your immune system working properly again! Does the body preferentially prefer glucose as a fuel? No, your body always runs mainly on fat except for brief periods of very intense exercise. Your brain also prefers to burn ketones at a rate of around 2.5 to 1 when they are available in equal quantity to glucose. Fasting stimulates the AMPK complex and activates autophagy. Autophagy (literally self eating) will cause cells to recycle foreign matter such as viruses and kill cancerous and senescent cells. AMPK does many helpful things in the body including activating the body's antioxidant defenses. Deep ketosis virtually eliminates chronic inflammation in the body. This can offset the life threatening symptoms of viral pneumonia which effectively kills you through inflammation. This also creates BHB ketones in your body, which also help your immune system and anti-oxidative system, especially in the brain. Ketones also provide an additional energy source during infection, which is critical when trying to fight off a bug. In fact you can have as much as three times the total energy available in your blood when you are in deep ketosis, or even more. It increases mitochondrial function and repairs mitichondrial DNA, leading to improved ATP production and oxygen efficiency and thereby making cells better able to fight off infection. Increased mitochondrial function also has the added benefit of increasing your metabolism and cancer prevention! After 72 hours or more fasted, your body recycles large numbers of immune bodies and creates new ones, rejuvenating your entire immune system. When you fast, this stimulates apoptosis in senescent or genetically damaged cells. This kills these cells off completely. Senescent cells are responsible for the effects of aging and are the root cause of the development of cancer. If it were possible to destroy them all it would completely stop aging and cancer. That is not possible but fasting can help limit these effects by killing off many of the affected cells and limiting the future effects of aging. Fasting also releases BDNF and NGF in the blood which stimulates new nerve and brain cell growth, helping a great deal with diseases like MS, peripheral neuropathy and Alzheimers. In fact, the biochemical regulator of BDNF production is beta-hydroxybutyrate, which is the same ketone the body produces to nourish the brain while fasting. Dieters losing weight through intermittent fasting show greater reduction in waist size and increase in insulin sensitivity for the same weight lost and alternate day fasters were shown to lose fat while gaining muscle at the same time over a six month period. Fasting reverses metabolic syndrome, which is tightly correlated to Chronic Fatiguque Syndrome, high blood pressurecancer and many other chronic diseases. Fasting has been shown to increase bone marrow volume by 10% and levels of carnosine in the body in as little as a few weeks. Fasting also increases telomere length, negating some of the effects of aging at a cellular level. Eating one meal a day can bring most of these benefits to a lesser degree, and adding a few entire days off from eating per week will have even more effect especially when starting to feel poorly. Exogenous ketones can aid with fasting, making it easier in healthy people and allowing some people with specific issues to fast in spite of them without worrying as much about hypoglycemia. Children, pregnant or nursing women should not fast for periods longer than 16 hours. People with pancreatic tumors or certain forms of hypoglycemia generally cannot fast at all. Type 1 diabetics can also fast but it is more complicated and should be approached with caution as it could lead to ketoacidosis. Those with Addison's disease may also be unable to fast without liberal use of exogenous ketones, depending on severity. If you experience extreme symptoms of some kind, especially dizziness then simply break the fast and seek advice. I am a sixty year old male and 20 months ago I started IF . I only eat one meal a day - at first it was to lose weight but that has not been the reason I have continued with it .for 22 years I have suffered with ulcerative colitis and after starting IF I found my insides felt a lot better -I didn’t give it much thought but carried on until I got so used to one meal a day it became the norm . I then started fasting for 2-3 days - a month - very hard to do but I started to really feel better for it .on diet I started to eat sauerkraut kimchi and make my own kefir / eating nuts and a wide range of veg and foods - less fruit and no sugar . Each 4 years I get a colonoscopy to check for cancer but the one I had 6 months ago was startling - there was no visible sign of UC and not microscopic evidence . I stopped taking medication a year ago too . The consultant was suprised and asked me had I been doing anything different/ I explained how well I felt on the eating regime .she said she had seen this before but that there was no evidence to link cause and effect . But I have not had one flare up on nearly two years . No signs of it at all . When I got home I did some research and found someone in the states by chance that had been doing exactly the same kind of thing as me and had been in remission for 5/6 years ! I have lost over a stone of weight and all my clothes have had to be changed - I cannot see how I can ever go back to regular eating - I did try when on holiday and I hated it so I am staying with this regime - I have decided to ignore any of the doctors and scientists on the matter because I don’t believe they know the real truth about it - I’m staying with this regime no food unless between 5pm and 9pm lots of water and black coffee / 2-3 days fasting a month with nothing but black coffee and water . I keep fit cycling running walking - never get hungry during the day anymore

I'm 63 and have been 13 stone for many years. I'm also 6' 5", so my BMI has been generally good. During the first two-year period of Covid, I put on 35lbs. A lot of this was a combination of mental health-related factors: stress, comfort eating (and drinking, with much more alcohol), and lack of exercise (even though I continued working throughout, as a care worker). In January this year, I decided to change my eating habits. I've always eaten three meals a day, and eat healthy foods - mainly a Mediterranean diet. So... I cut down on the alcohol (empty calories) and simply switched to two meals a day - breakfast and evening main meal - and just had a piece of fruit for lunch. It wasn't easy at first, with hunger pangs hitting me mid-morning and throughout the afternoon. But I soon adjusted to it. And I'm now back down to, actually, 12.5 stones! Still a healthy weight, and closer to what it was in my teens and 20s. I realise, of course, that this isn't strictly what is meant by 'intermittent fasting'. But I thought it was worth mentioning because of the relatively fast time that the body seems able to adjust - even in late middle-age - to this change of regime.

I have done the 5:2 diet for 3 years ( intermittent fasting). I am now a UK size 10 and have easily maintained my weight for the past 2 years on this lifestyle. 5 days of eating a mainly vegan, organic, wholefood diet with oily fish 3 x a week and 2 days of 500 to 800 calories a day. And yes, I eat oats everyday and I do eat whole grains but no processed foods or sugar at all. I grow my own organic fruit and veg in rural Portugal and contrary to what this doctor says, it's possible to avoid processed food! I grew up in a family where people cooked from scratch. I also make my own herbal kombucha. I love experimenting in the kitchen, healthy eating is a joy! At 59 I take no medication and I am very healthy. Yes, intermittent fasting works.

Absolutely. While maybe not everyone, for many of us avoiding commercially processed foods is possible. At the very least we all should avoid ultra processed "foods" and minimize highly processed foods. Cooking from scratch requires meal prep and planning... for example having broth ready and available. Learning to make homemade probiotic foods like kombucha, kefir, kimchi, etc is possible just by using the internet.

I have been on an intermittent fasting system 16:8 for 3.5 years and it works really well. My blood pressure is perfect and blood sugar level 4.7. I used to be quite overweight but over those 3.5 years I have lost not only weight but a lot of fat from the areas of my body like belly and legs, my body shape has changed without any exercises really. So, yeah, it works. The fasting periods helps body to reduce insulin level and if extra energy needed during the fasting mode, the body takes energy from your storage like fat. I recommend book "Obesity code". My sister and mum have diabetes and they don't listen to me.

So pleased this is being highlighted. I have been doing IF in conjunction with keto food selection. I found it useful to start with going gluten free, then cut out grains, I was not eating meat at that stage and lost a lot of weight....but....I needed more mineral supplements and felt weak, so I introduced more eggs, and now I eat more meat and less supplements , this is good for me now. I am keeping off most of my weight by an 18/6 eating window, eating two meals a day. Breakfast is bacon eggs mushrooms avocado mini steak ( some choices)......I eat that breakfast meal at 12 noon. Black coffee with electrolyte drops, green tea with ginger and lemon, water are drink choices. My next meal is dinner I eat that by 5.30, that consists of any meat dish, a few veges by way of broccoli, home grown herbs, micro greens home grown, pickled veges, zucchini.. any of those foods. Coffee black, or a few blueberries, home grown with high fat low sugar yogurt are my only dessert. Those are my two meals a day. No eating between meals, I do not feel hungry. Tips.....do not calorie count, eat till youre full. Stay off sugar. Stay off alcohol. Carbs below 50 grams. No vegetable oils, just butter It works for me, .yes I do have cheat times once a fortnight battered fish with slaw...no chips. Also bake a keto slice using monk fruit as sweetener coconut flour, high cocoa chocolate. Thats pretty much it. I don't feel hungry.

I eat keto and again never more than 2 meals a day 16:8 is standard but sometimes i go omad. If i sometimes experience hunger it is slight and soon passes. I feel absolutely great and have excellent energy levels ( even when i do multiday fasts). I joined Zoe eating plan and did the blood tests and had a couple of weeks with the glucose monitor. My results showed that i process sugars badly ( this confirmed what i had come to believe) but process fats quite well. Despite this i was advised to add ‘good’ carbs into my diet. As all carbs are broken down to sugars there is not much to choose between them and i couldn’t bring myself to add them back into my diet. ( Dr David Unwin has done some amazing work reversing type 2 diabetes with very low carb diets and he has charts showing the sugar equivalent of things like pasta and rice etc) I have a real issue with carbs - i was a yoyo dieter for 40 years - so i know that i cant cut back carbs longterm it does not work for me i have to abstain ! I feel Zoe are missing a trick not allowing and studying people who are on Keto 😢

I've been intermittent fasting for a while now. You do kit a plateau eventually if you still eat carbs. I think keto is key... this is different than intermittent fasting, though it goes along with it. It is discussed in this video that essentially you want to avoid carbs...which is a keto diet. For me the difference is huge... if I eat bread, it makes me sleepy and unable to focus. If I eat meat or leafy vegetables (no potatoes etc), I'm fine even mid day. It's not even about losing weight... you just feel better both physically and mentally when you're not eating carbs. People are different and in different situations...for example, kids are fine to eat carbs as they're running around everywhere constantly and growing. Same for pregnant or lactating women...or even athletes. But for the vast majority of normal adults, intermitting fasting + keto will really help you.

Yes, bioindividuality matters so much. I started fasting to help my microbiome rather than to loose weight. I lost too much weight and weighed less than 100lb! Also, it was stressful on myself and my family, which in turn is not good for the microbiome. So I pulled it back. I was doing 16 hr fast with an 8 hr eating window six days a week, but a 20-24 hr fast once a week. Now I do a 14 hr fast with 10 hr eating window. I feel best this way. It is better than when I used to eat and snack from 8 am till 11 pm, but still doable without stress. So find your own happy place with it. And build up slowly. I remember the first time I tried to not eat for 4 hrs, I could barely stand the hunger pangs, it is like my body thought I was starving. Now I feel fine going that long, but I only feel safe if I bring a snack with me, even if I don't eat it. I see other people go 12 hrs without even thinking about it.

This study is a brilliant idea especially as their are no invested interests and I will defo take part. Intermittent fasting works for me and set me free from the programming of 3 meals a day, it was really freeing. Conscious eating is a new goal for me where I gauge my level of hunger and only eat when I have reached a point of true hunger, I taste each food and really enjoy it and stop when that point of satisfied comes, I now leave food on my plate, wow I never thought that would happen. I don’t watch telly or other distractions as that just leads me to be unconscious about what and how much I’m eating . Perk I’m slowly losing weight yea 😃✨🤗

I’ve been on IF for 4 years now. Im a woman in my 40s, and I’ve lost 65lbs. The last 10lbs was keto. I’m sticking to both as I have a brand new body and a brand new life (as well as excellent blood work results). My husband is in his 50s and unfortunately it was much harder for him. But he did it. He simply added bone broth fasting twice a week to IF. It’s something you get used to. We’re never hungry. But it’s crazy how people react when you tell them that breakfast is actually NOT the most important meal of the day. Not for a grown up anyway. Or that carbs cause inflammation. They get so defensive, mad even. 😂 I think that’s because we evolved to seek abundance to survive and thrive. When you want to take something away, the brain rebels. But we’re not built for constant food availability, processed food and longer eating hours due to artificial light and long working hours. I’m looking forward to a longer, happier life. 😊

I always used to think breakfast was imperative (to fuel a heavy gym work-out), and wouldn't dream of leaving the house without consuming a huge bowl of porridge. These days I don't even think about breakfast, even if I'm making it for the rest of the family. Mid-day is now the earliest I will eat. A small bowl of porridge is now just a rare treat. My energy filled gym sessions are always first thing in the morning, after a cup of coffee and a large glass of lemon or lime water..................

Breakfast is the most important meal because that's when our insulin works the best . Also , carbs don't cause inflammation any more than fats do. That's keto talk. Certain carbs and fats may cause inflammation but that doesn't mean we should demonise a whole macro nutrient . Stop trying to take people's carbs away. It's not healthy.

I started 18:6 a few weeks ago and I love the energy and weight loss. It was easy to start, I ate a satisfying, low-carb dinner and skipped breakfast the next day and never looked back. I don’t count calories or measure anything so I avoid tipping-over into unhealthy obsession with my meals, and the meals I eat in my window are more focused on enjoyment, flavor, nutrient density, and satiety. I also naturally avoid simple carbs because I’m aware that my next 18 hrs will be easier if I’ve avoided glucose spikes. Best of all, I’m full and satisfied with far less food than when I was eating three meals and two snacks. Luckily, I love fermented foods so those were easy to increase and kombucha is a good substitute for my evening ritual of a cocktail. If I’m ever hungry I set a timer and surprisingly the hunger is gone in 10 minutes.

However, I will tell you that without becoming Fat Adapted you may find it difficult to only eat during a shorter time window. I am 69 and generally have a cheese/meat snack around 14:00 followed by a meat/green veggies dinner around 17:00. A coffee/small dessert at 19:00. I often skip the afternoon snack if not hungry. My wife has a bigger vegetable/yogurt lunch around 13:00. We are never hungry on this plan, but if I choose to eat more carbs than usual in a day, there is always a corresponding weight gain overnight of about one to two pounds.

Fantastic ! I have been intermittently fasting all my life, it isn't something that you do just once, it's a way of life incorporated into your lifetime practice of well being. So every three months for example you fast for a week to twelve days, I would suggest a juice fast where you are still getting all of what the body needs to be healthy physically and for brain function. Indian culture has been doing this for thousands of years, every system needs a rest and a clean out to remain working at optimal levels, these days people maintain their computers with a 6 monthly maintenance program, more than they do for their own bodies !
