Every year on November 10, Indigenous Peoples (IP) Heroes Day is celebrated globally by IP groups, communities, and advocates to honor the heroes and defenders of the IP. In the Philippines, Indigenous communities have a long-standing history of resistance against land dispossession, environmental destruction, and human rights violations. Today, this struggle continues in the face of militarization, displacement, and political repression.
Katribu Kalipunan ng Katutubong Mamamayan ng Pilipinas, International Indigenous Peoples Movement for Self-Determination (IPMSDL), and Kabataan para sa Tribung Pilipino (UP Diliman Chapter), in partnership with UP Fine Arts Gallery (Parola) of the College of Fine Arts in University of the Philippines Diliman, commemorated the event through a cultural gathering.
With the theme “Isabuhay ang Pamana ng mga Katutubong Bayani. Itaguyod ang Karapatan sa Lupang Ninuno at Sariling Pagpapasya!”, we remembered Marilyn Quierrez, Mayeth Corpuz, Roy Giganto, Kaerlan Fernagel, Datu Kaylo Bontolan, and their communities’ efforts to defend ancestral lands and uphold the rights to self-determination. Together with the masses, they have fought relentlessly for the Indigenous Peoples’ rights, just and lasting peace, and cultures.
