International Sign, Not ASL?

My linguistics final for Frontrunners, it felt like the appropriate time to upload this since I recently did a video for Ai-Media discussing Americans and their relationship with the international community.

Yes, this applies to both sign language and spoken language. I find Americans coming to Norway, for example, expecting that everyone knows english. Most of us do, but I don't like how they all just expect it. When we visit America, we are expected to speak english. And we do! Why shouldn't it be the way around? I think American people visiting other countries should at least TRY to learn some of the language, just to say thank you (takk), or greet. When products doesn't have english writing on it or the writing is really bad, it seems like everyone is like "That english is so bad, why can't they double check it". Why should they? If a brand usually is sold in Korea, why should it have english writing on it? The rest of the world is expected to understand and use english all the time, and sometimes, I really dislike it. I am glad you made this video :) I speak Norwegian Sign Language (Norsk Tegnspråk) and it is also an official language here in Norway :)

@@alonzomartii well I dont actually think that as an american I cant speak for everyone but people visit other countries for different reasons if its just visiting then sure I would say pick up some basic words to help get by and use translators maybe but if youre staying there to live then I think its much more important to learn the language.

Because the three most spoken languages in the world are Mandarin English and Spanish... I may learn one or two other languages but I'm not going to learn every language because people are sensitive. You didn't learn it for any other reason than, you wanted to, and it's an international language because of the position of the US Canada and Britain in the world stage, realistically that's just one reason as the sole reason they teach it optionally everywhere and mandatory in other places is because of the second reason and your desire to learn it was likely influenced by this as well. It's ridiculous and closed minded to think it's the same thing.

@@javiervalenzuela8284 Still you should learn to say basic things in that languages, you can't just mock people that don't speak or refuse to speak your language in THEIR country, in their country it's their very right to don't have to put up with people that don't even want to learn to say "Hello", or other basic words

@@javiervalenzuela8284 Actually if you go by number of speakers in 2020 it is English (1,123 million speakers) Mandarin Chinese (1,117 million speakers) and Hindi (615 million speakers) Spanish is fourth with 534 million speakers but don't forget that a large population of Chinese and Hindi speakers are bilingual and multilingual, being fluent in their language of origin and usually English and another dialect from their country, unlike most Americans, so there's that

I like what you had to say! You're right, in the Americas there is a know-it-all attitude. I find that attitude can make folks close-minded. It's amazing what can be learned by appreciating another culture & language and by admitting there is more than one way to do things. :) Great video.

In some parts I agree but at the same time It's a generalization to say all americans feel that way, I for one dont and try to be more considerate of new cultures and language regions/ peoples I interact with.

I really enjoy language learning, and have just started ASL. But we have deaf relatives in Hungary and I was just having a messenger conversation with some of them about the difference between Hungarian Sign and ASL. I want to get grounded in ASL but I may need to learn at least some of the Hungarian before our next trip back to visit.

Greetings! I have a few small questions that may sound quite ignorant... So I would like to apologize for my ignorance in advance. I am Lithuanian, and I know that almost every country has its own sign language. How common is it for sign language users to learn IS in addition to their native sign language? Since I am planning on learning sign language, I am trying to decide whether fellow Lithuanians and other people would be able to understand me if decided to learn IS instead of Lithuanian sign language. Or would you advice learning both IS and Lithuanian sign language? I know that you may not be familiar with Lithuania and its sign language, but I don't know anyone who could help with these questions...

It really depends! I don't really know how to answer your question, because I don't know much about Lithuania, or Lithuanian sign language, but I'd still suggest learning your country's sign language before IS. Part of the reason is because Lithuanian sign language likely has more opportunity to be learned than IS. There is no formal course or class for learning IS, and it's not standardized, it will vary a little depending on where it's signed. I'm also not sure how much IS is really used in the Baltics, so I think it'd probably be better to learn Lithuanian sign language first.

I remember a couple weeks back when I was done with most of my schoolwork asking my sibling who also wanted to learn sign language wether we should learn ASL or BSL for convenience. She told me about International Sign and I feel ashamed I didn't so much as know about it. I feel it's sad that I didn't even think of an alternative and just decided that English would be the to-go when it's not even my first language.

So does that mean that as a hearing person that lives a bit everywhere in the world my best bet would be to learn the international sign language instead of ASL? Cause all I've seen so far suggests that's better to learn either ASL or your community SL, but if you don't have a community cause you don't live stable in one country/continent which SL should you go for?

Hey everyone, i need your opinion on something unique. My grandmother (from Ukraine) lives at home with me, is about 1,000 years old, has terrible hearing and is nearly blind! Because her hearing and vision could worsen, I began learning and teaching her common words in ASL so that she would always be able to communicate. Here's the thing.. we can't fingerspell because, she doesn't know any English. And I don't know how to write or sign in Russian. Does anyone have any insight or advice? anyone had a similar issue?

Unfortunately, not that I know of. I don't think there would be, because International Sign isn't a formal language and it changes a lot depending on the region you're in. If such a thing exists, I'll be happy to be proved wrong!

this is all very interesting but I am trying to teach my high school students international sign language and the only engaging videos I find are the ASL ones, not the international sign ones! A very frustrated teacher!!

So the moral of the story:there are many types of sign language just as there is spoken language.

Well, not that accurate. For example, here in Spain we have a lot of spoken languages: Spanish, Catalan (Catalan itself, Valencian and the Balearic dialects), Basque, Galician, Asturleonese, Fala, Extremaduran, Aragonese, Aranese, and I don't know if there are more. But officially 2 sign languages: Spanish and Catalan Sign Language. The rest of the communities use Spanish Sign Language with few variations such as letters Ç (in Catalan, Valencian and Balearic), TX, TZ, TS, TT in Basque language in the case of the alphabet. But also some signs vary, a very low percentage. I'd say that per country, there is at least 1 different sign language.

I know its an unpopular opinion but fuck minority languages and culture bullshit, theres nothing of value to respect, protect or preserve. A universal language and method of common communication is way more interesting and important in my opinion and I think it would help to build international rapport through shared experience.

I don't know what your language knowledge is, but if you don't know International Sign, then you wouldn't understand most of this video right away. You can always use KZbin's settings to slow down the speed of the video, or turn on the captions!
