Fans of deep sea biodiversity, it’s your lucky day because this highlight video is over thirteen minutes of some of the best sights spotted during our H1993 dive of the NA153 expedition to explore the deep seas near Johnston Atoll. Whether you’re especially interested in crustaceans like the “weird” Polychelidae slipper lobster or passionate about deep sea fishes like the rattfish and halosaur, this video will certainly deliver. Enjoy an extra large and thick bamboo coral taller than ROV Hercules, translucent pink sea cucumber, and even a deep sea lava tunnel spotted on the rocky seafloor.
Spot Gorgonocephalus basket stars, a juvenile Chaunocops anglerfish, and bright red stalked crinoids and enjoy some gorgeous views from both ROV Hercules and ROV Atalanta as it oversees Herc explore the seafloor. Fans of the Venus flytrap sea anemone (Actinoscyphia aurelia) and Anthomastus sp. mushroom corals don’t worry, you’re also covered! Explore this wonderful region beyond US national jurisdiction but close to the Pacific Remote Island Marine National Monument with us and let us know which sighting is your favorite!

Please neverstop...this footage and commentary are so needed right now. as an actual antidote to the bewildering madness that is taking place on the land above the Ocean.

I agree please don't, you bring so many of us to our happy place in the midst of all the darkness. We are here for it. The innocence of nature. We love the commentary no matter how nerdy. ❤❤❤

It's refreshing to hear the word "biodiversity" not immediately followed by "endangered". But I guess the deep sea is one of the last habitats to be affected by our destruction of life on our planet. Great work as usual. Thanks from very hot Vienna, Scott

So just for the sake of clarity the fish at 4:48 Is a Chimaera which is a cartilanginous fish that is a close relative of sharks and rays. They are commonly called ghost sharks, as well as rabbit fish, spookfish and as they refer to it here rat fish but this can easily be confused with rattails or grenadiers which they kind of call it in the video. Though they do mention seeing a Chimaera in the clip right after that, I thought it might be worth pointing out, since there are a lot of other rat tails seen in the video and each group is so cool they deserve to be recognized for what they are. Also they must be saving the video highlights of all the dumbos that they saw on this dive for one video because i was really hoping to see the highlights of them all especially the bigger Cirroteuthis!

yea same but i bet they are gunna put them in their own highlight video, at least i hope so! the big Cirroteuthis was really cool and they got some pretty great footage of it especially since all the dumbo videos usually go pretty wild and get a ton of views!

At this depth any creature with eyes sees everything pretty subdued. With the bright lights from the submersible wouldn't it have the same effect as us looking directly at the sun?

I've always wondered how much if any damage the lights do. I know we need them to see, but does the sudden and bright light cause any kind of damage to anything?
@alveolate
@alveolate Жыл бұрын
interesting question... my guess is that as long as the light source isn't illuminating a huge area for a long time (say, couple of hours or more), i don't think it would disrupt any circadian rhythms? even then, i'd imagine any disturbed rhythms would reset after a day or so?

@connorjohnson4402

@@jank330 While that has been a potential method for combating acidification that has been proposed for many years, most of the science looking at that as a solution is very mixed and most of it is really opposed to implementing it on any sort of large scale. We don't really have that good of an idea on how the complex systems of nutrient cycling and transport work on the larger scale, and most studies and scientist agree that major additions of nutrients at some point in the system may end up upsetting it some place else and could backfire more than it helps at all. Thats why in 2008 the United Nations COnvention on Biological Diversity to place a moratorium on ocean fertilization projects apart from small scale costal experiments.
