I don't know if Lenin said it or not but it sounds plausible to me. Marx, and I have to assume Lenin as well, held the belief that economic history sort of goes like: Fuedalism -> Capitalism -> Socialism -> Communism, each needed to uproot and end the last until they reach the end goal of communism.

Well, Mao's texts and ideology was all about pragmatism. "The goal is the most important, and if you must change your methods to get there, do it." China hasn't given up the power of the state, and thus, it's still in a good position to move ahead with socialism eventually. The truth is, that if China would have refused to adapt to the capitalist system to some extent, it would never have jumped from an underdeveloped country to the second largest economy in the world in 36 years.
