In recent years, it has become common for employers to take on unpaid (usually student) "interns" to work during summer break and to develop practical experience to supplement a field of academic study. While the motivation for hiring such interns is usually altruistic, often the student interns perform duties that are substantially similar to those of regular, paid employees or are asked to perform work (sometimes menial in nature) that has nothing to do with their academic course of study. As a result, employers should look to their legal counsel for guidance in avoiding pitfalls when hosting interns.
