You can stick it higher above from the bottom of the helmet to prevent damaging the mini-USB plug. If the clamp one doesn't fit properly or don't want to use it.

What do you mean you used the wrong bracket? To me it seems like the clamp one doesn't fit properly

The bracket with staple looking thing under it is the right one. That "staple" is for protecting mini-usb plug for example hitting your jacket collar and coming loose.

The staple thing is not tough enough to protect/support the plug against hard impacts. It's a little bit fluffy and breaks over time. But it does its job on using daily bases.
