A viewer recently asked me some questions about growing other things in with garlic, so I thought I'd do a short video speaking to those questions, and showing how I do it as well.

Put down a thick layer of straw or mulch. That will insulate them. Same with carrots and you can keep your carrots in the ground and pull them out as needed.

Here's a little trick when transplanting when at least some of the plants will be bare root: Wet a cloth, put the bare root transplants on the cloth and fold the cloth over the roots. Then, as you need a plant just pull it out from the cloth. This will keep the roots moist and prevent many of the tiny root hairs from dying. If you do this the plats will recover quicker.

Hi Greg, Doug from Maine here again. I still garden with woodchip paths with log outlined beds and mulch with seaweed, grass, Leaves and salt marsh hay. I’ve been doing it successfully for decades, but in the spring, it is infested with ticks. I do a tick check every time I enter the garden and every two hours if I am spending the day there. The rest of my yard and Orchard is patrolled by chickens so ticks aren’t an issue. I am very interested to see how your sand pathways work out. Best of luck with that and wishing you a great garden season.

Cool man - too bad about your ticks, but good to know that my fear was justified. I love the woodchips and would still be using that approach to walkways were it not for ticks. We had rain all day and all night yesterday (and still today) - and it was raining cats and dogs - so hopefully the new paths have not washed into the forest :)

Unfortunately none of my garlic made it this year. I'm a new gardener to edibles, 2nd Spring. My first planting 2017 did well. 2018 came up got about 4" then they stopped growing and died. I don't particularly know enough, but I suppose I need to buy a good batch from a farmer's market and when I finally grow a good crop save mine for planting. 2018 I just bought it organic from my supermarket, I'm guessing maybe that's the reason it didn't do well. Greg, thank you for sharing, much appreciated. ;)

Oh sorry to hear about that. Yes, be sure to buy seed garlic to increase odds of success (and lower risk of diseases), and be sure to get a variety that does well in your area.

Planning to do a video on different manures soon - but the short answer is that you either have to till those ones in, or put them on in the fall, or sprinkle on very sparingly during the season.

I read that spinach is a companion plant to garlic, the height is about right, and it's gone by garlic harvest time so I think that's great....I'm doing it this season in Lincoln County Maine this season...like this week.

Soooo, just because my brain has trouble letting go of some things: did you plant that little arugula that you placed on a bare spot on the other side from where you were demoing? Just askin'. :-)
