The oral tradition was the things the Apostles taught verbally to the fledgling churches (the gatherings of believers in Christ Jesus) prior to the availability of the writings. But once the writings were available and the Apostles had passed from this earth, oral tradition ended. From then on any attempt to continue communicating the oral tradition would be subject to human fallibility. Anyone who ever played the childhood game of 'telephone" knows how garbled a message becomes after only the fourth or fifth telling. That is why oral tradition ceased being infallible when the Apostles died: they were no longer around to correct the garbling errors. But by then they had left the Scriptures to correct those errors. This is why we must evaluate everything, including subsequent church traditions, against the unchanging, constant, infallible measuring rod of the Holy Scriptures: to prevent novel doctrines and bad teachings from taking over the church. Rome failed to utilize this method, and that is why the Roman religion became corrupted. For example, you won't find anywhere in the Bible that Jesus or the Apostles taught the Marian dogmas, or the _Unam Sanctam_ dogma which says one can only be saved if one is obedient to the Roman pope, or the portion of Transubstantiation doctrine which says that the substances of bread and wine cease at the consecration, or that one should worship the Eucharist. All of these are later accretions of the second millennium and were not a part of the Apostolic "faith once delivered unto the saints" (Jude 1:3) for which we must contend.
