Interpretations of Open Interest

For this to make total sense it has to be combined with volume delta. Falling OI in a down trend just means more longs are being closed than shorts opened. VD and CVD tells you the numbers. Only then do you know if you have recently opened trapped shorts that can pump the price. Without that you're guessing aren't you?

@@thecaptain3068 How can a course covering in depth trading education be detrimental? What would this guy showing you his PNL prove to you? How would you know his gains came directly as a result of the information in the course and how would you know it's just not photoshopped with whatever numbers he wants to insert? If you can't see the value in education when it comes to a complicated skill you are trying to master, especially one that involves money, and base your decision on whether or not to consume information on some testimonial or financial statement that are usually fake anyway, if you're afraid to spend some money on education and take a risk that it may or may not be helpful, but you'll take a risk with that same money in the market and then lose it because of your lack of knowledge, you'll always be part of the 90%. Winners do what most others are not willing to do. It's just that simple. They run the extra 5 miles while everyone else is at home still sleeping. They take the extra class even though it's not required to graduate. They pay to read books and take full courses while everyone else is scraping the free video clips on KZbin to get only a small piece of the information they need to succeed. You can take this as an attack or as some good advice. Well see what you do. But the comment got my goat because it's one of many like it I've seen today.

OI analysis only applies in times when derivatives markets dictate price movements? Or are you assuming that derivatives rules low time frames movements and spot rules large time frame swings??

Well open interest provides a wonderful look at prices at which billions of USD worth of contracts are being opened/closed. That is invaluable data.

If I sell calls, does that number get added to the open interest? And if so, how do I know the open interest amount was from someone who bought calls and someone who sold calls? Example: if I see that the open interest is 5000, was it from someone who bought 5000 calls or was it someone who sold 5000 calls?

So open interest is pretty much just short interest or does it depend on if the long vs short chart changes also ? Like does open interest just mean new positions short or long or is it only short

What is BTC/PERP??? PERPETUAL is no currency and it also is not a coin!!! This makes 0 sense!!! Why is the pair not called BTC/BITMEX??? That would make just as much sense as BTC/PERP!!! WTF is PERP????

Because it's not a pair, it refers to the futures contract. Perpetual means the contract does not have a finite close or ending date/time yet stays open perpetually.
