Thank you so much for these amazing videos they are very helpful.. I've always wondered why can't interpreters work solo on their own I mean why does our business have to be in the hands of the agencies to decide when and how often do we get a job ?? Why can't we work for ourselves and approach stakeholders personally and ask if they need an interpreter like any other job in the world ???

That's a good question. I do know of some interpreters who work directly with clients. However, most clients want to use interpreting agencies because an agency can staff things at anytime and anywhere, where as an individual will not always be available to cover cases when the client wants or needs them. An agency also screens and handles any issues with interpreters that clients do not have time or knowledge to deal with. I think that many interpreters would rather work through an agency because the agency has many contracts and can provide a variety of work that would be hard for the individual interpreter to secure directly from multiple clients. This provides for the potential of more work. The agency also manages payment and communication issues with the client.

@@ClarityInterpreting thanks for the reply .. yeah I guess interpreting policies differs in America from here in Australia we, as interpreters are not allowed to work directly with the clients under any circumstances so I concider you lucky in that matter.. thanks again for answering my question

@@lavieenrose8365 that's very interesting. Most interpreters in the US are "independent contractors" and not employees which means that interp agencies cannot tell them who they can and can't work for. We have interpreters that work for us, and other companies and directly to some people they have relationships with. All we can do is put a contract in place that our interpreters will not work directly with the clients that we introduce them to for up to a year.
