Interpreting Romantic Music: Leon Fleisher Workshop

Renowned pianist, conductor, and teacher Leon Fleisher led 16 young musicians in a weeklong exploration of the chamber music of Johannes Brahms for piano trio, piano quartet, and piano quintet May 3 -- 9, 2010. Mr. Fleisher was joined by special guest faculty cellist Yo-Yo Ma and violinist Pamela Frank providing a rare opportunity to see three masters coaching and playing together.
The workshop culminated in two performances in Weill Recital Hall on Saturday, May 8 and Sunday, May 9, 2010 featuring the Vox Piano Trio, The Jasper String Quartet with pianist Kyung Wha Chu, The Amici Piano Quartet, and the Hill Piano Quartet.

Fascinating how difficult it is to explain music and musical language. L. Bernstein did a wonderful job attempting that impossible task. When I met Leon he was obsessed with this difficulty. A natural talent is a beginning and an insight gained from a great teacher and a great musician is a very rare completion indeed. Life is a journey and one can not sit on a pinnacle after climbing the mountain. The journey is the destination in music. Search within and be inspired by old masters.

I found it interesting that Fleisher used the concept of knowing a language phonetically but not in content. This is so Jewish. So many of us know Hebrew phonetically but have very limited comprehension.

Now we have computers that can play "rhythm" exactly as it's written and as fast as we want - what comes out the speakers cries us in the face: THIS IS NOT MUSIC !
