My great great grandfather was linched by the KKK in 1900 in Birmingham Alabama. He was a mormon missionary and they did not like that. It took two other mormons to sneak in and retrieve his body.

fun fact:About 350 extras were hired for the Klan rally sequence. Many of them were members of a military formation troupe, and many were African-Americans! Joel Coen later recalled hearing one say, 'This is the freakiest thing!'

I might be mistaken, but I could’ve sworn that I heard the burning cross tradition originates from lowland Scots, well really ‘Covenanters’ (Presbyterians), who did it to frighten Church of Scotland/Anglican officials off of their land and in response to reprisals during the late 17th century. perhaps this rumour only pervades the K** itself.

Unfortunately, the KKK was in northern states too. There were an instance of students at Notre Dame getting into a fight with an Indiana chapter of the KKK.
