Newborns have roughly the same chance of being born intersex as they do of having red hair. But for decades, doctors have surgically chosen a gender for thousands of intersex people, without their consent. Serena Daniari met up with two people who don’t fit the average definition of “male” or “female.”

I'm always amazed at how much nonconforming kids grow; I always see about kids like Ori, who have such clarity and maturity far beyond their age. That in itself show how hard life is for them. It's very similar to kids from dysfunctional households, and it really makes me sad, cause it's quite evident they have it rough, most definitely because their medium is making it be difficult for them.

I know that „they“ is the widely used way of referring to someone binary, but I find it confusing. It sounds like they’re referring to multiple people. Glad to see parents respecting their child as an equal though. S3x change operations should only be performed at the person‘s own request at an age where said person can be informed enough to truly consent to what is, an irreversible and mostly unnecessary change to their body.

As a Finn I find gendered pronouns confusing. We have only one pronoun for everyone ”hän”. Swedish ”they” is ”hen”(singular) and it's kinda close to Finnish ”hän” (maybe they took it from Finnish) - however in spoken language we refer to each others as ”se” which means ”it” 😂

Well, this video shows the life and opinion relevant to 30% of intersex patients. The rest of them, 70%, who, according to statistics, had a successful operation and identify with the fenotype gender, are not represented, they do not speak here. Also, this video lacks relevant medical statistics and long term studies regarding intersex people. Concluding, is profoundly manipulative. Is totally unfair for the 70% of the intersex population and for other medical doctors, as their opinion or life experience is not heard. To be fair and relevant, this video should have included the opinion of the other part of intersex people and medical doctors.

do you mean the 1.7% stat? that’s pretty contested given that most of the ones in this number are “mild” intersex conditions, and the majority of those are LOCAH, which is contested on whether it’s really intersex or not. but still, even if you take those people out of the equation, it would still be roughly 1 in 200 children, and they don’t deserve to live in a society that sees them as mistakes or abominations to be fixed with unnecessary cosmetic surgeries on their genitalia (although intersex activists do support surgeries that are medically necessary to save a child’s life, like me who had underdeveloped high-risk-of-cancer gonads that needed to be removed)

I just think this video is a little unfair to doctors. Sure, they are the ones proposing these medical procedures, but they can't do anything without the parents consent. Parents are the ones who decide whether their child is going to have this surgery done, since the child is uncapable of making this decision. Also, if the parents decide for a child to have this surgery, they obviously do this in hopes of getting their child an easier life.
@hugheaston7598

The child is perfectly capable of deciding whether to have surgery themselves, once they've reached the legal age of consent. There's no reason to perform these surgeries before then, other than to satisfy the ego of doctors and to placate parents who don't want their child to be "different". Having the surgery doesn't give the child an easier life. It often results in them spending their childhood in and out of hospitals having further surgeries to correct problems caused by the initial surgery, and as adults discovering they're unable to enjoy sex because they've suffered so much scarring and nerve damage in their genital region.
