Interstate 69 dudes! In this episode, we look at the very discontiguous portions of I-69 through Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, Arkansas, and Louisiana. This episode examines the most contiguous section. Control City Freak is updated weekly and covers every two digit Interstate Highway in America. I'll be showing control city signs on each 1 and 2 digit (2di) Interstate Highway in the continental United States and will strive to make as complete a record as possible. I'll also be getting into the roadgeek weeds here and there, showing downtown skylines and state border crossings, and making corny jokes. one thing to note on I-69 in TN is that some of the construction has already gone underway, just not finished. Although Fulton KY is the official endpoint of that I-69 segment, they're building a stretch of it bypassing Union City TN. From there it will eventually be continued around Dyersburg and southwest to Memphis. Some stretches will likely be resigned on parts of US 51 but other stretches will probably be built from scratch (like Union City)

To add on to that, money was allocated for constructing the Troy Bypass as part of the Transportation Appropriations Bill. This will extend from the current southern end of the Union City bypass and run to the east of Troy.

I live in north MS. That north bound I-69 - I-55 junction was built in a clover leaf based on traffic MDOT data collected. If you go straight there instead of existing, the interstate turns into I-269. It was completed recently and is an outer beltway around the Memphis metro. I-269 links up with I-40 and most of the traffic is people taking I-269 to I-40 (or suburbs east of Memphis) versus taking the north bound I-55 / I-69 ramp to avoid the core of Memphis and the traffic. This may change once I-69 is actually completed and crosses the MS river and a new interchange will need to be built, but we all know how slow building I-69 has been so who knows when that will be. There was some discussion about how these routes would be assigned between MDOT and TDOT before I-269 was built. One proposal was to badge the I-269 beltway as I-69 concurrently all the way around Memphis until it links up with US-51/Future I-69 north of Memphis. The other proposal was how it is badged today. I think the more direct route makes since, especially since both TDOT and MDOT are doing a lot of work making I-55 8 lanes from just south of Desoto County MS all the way across the river into AR with the new MS river bridge going up.

Fun fact: The Western KY Parkway is slated to be designated as I-569 in the future from the interchange with I-69 to the interchange with I-165 (the former Natcher Parkway). I-69 also replaced the majority of the Pennyrile Parkway; the remainder section from the I-69 interchange to I-24 should actually be I-169 but it doesn’t seemed to be signed as such yet. Maybe that’ll change soon?

There isn't one proposed. However there is an I-369 proposed which is currently the Audubon Parkway.

Update: Kentucky just unveiled 4 “future I-569 corridor” signs on the western Kentucky parkway the 38 mile stretch. 2 signs on each direction. Upgrades still have to be made however. So western Kentucky parkway will be I-569. Audubon parkway I-369. And pennyrile parkway I-169. I think the Cumberland parkway will be I-365 since I-66 is canceled. Kentucky really gives North Carolina a run for its money when it comes to designating new interstates

assuming that Tennessee actually builds 69 in-state along the east side of the Mississippi ... TNDOT likely will list Dyersburg and/or Union City as a control city. TNDOT won't skip all the way up 69's projected path and list Indianapolis. nor Evansville. TNDOT just ain't gonna do it.

A long time ago (5-10 years) I saw a set of bid documents for the small 2-mile long portion of I-269 near Collierville (the part btwn TN 385 and the state line, as when TN 385 was planned, 269 was not even thought of so they had to add on that small portion of 269). When they had these documents online, the signing plan had Shreveport and Evansville as the control cities. Typically, TDOT does a pretty good job changing out the signage of a road is rerouted or upgraded; the portion that was TN 385 that is now 269 had different signs 5 years ago and they already changed them on the main line and side roads to more reasonable ones. All that being said, I think they will change them to Shreveport and Evansville from the Memphis metro if the road ever gets there (or in TN, at least leave it Jackson, MS southbound). But I don’t think they’ll leave all but maybe that sign on I-40, exit 2 as Millington and certainly not as Dyersburg. They don’t sign Jackson, TN on I-40 and it’s 6 times larger than Dyersburg so I doubt they’ll sign it as that unless it’s as a secondary.

Once 69 is complete, will it be faster to get from Chicago to Memphis by going through Paducah than by going through Sikeston. If not, what about by using 155 rather than 40 to cross the Mississippi? If either will be faster than going through Sikeston, I think 57 should be rerouted along the fastest route between Chicago and Memphis, and 57 west of it can be part of a new east-west route that uses current I-30 to get to Texas. I think 69 should then be rerouted along 169 and the Western Kentucky Parkway can be an extension of I-68 or I-26

I am unsure how to get 26 to Kentucky, but 68 could use 79 to get to Charleston, WV and then be concurrent with I-64 from Charleston to Lexington South of Memphis, Mississippi’s I-69 can be part of I-22. Texas’s can be part of a new interstate following US 59 from Laredo to Texarkana

I think Wingo is the current southern end point for I-69 in KY. There should be END I-69/BEGIN Purchase Pkwy and vice versa assemblies somewhere in that area. I think the old “toll booth cloverleaf” interchange at Wingo has to be rebuilt before they can sign 69 in that area, plus possibly a few other minor upgrades, namely guardrails to overcome the (slightly) substandard median width.

the 69 portion in Mississippi is abnormal ... but 69's path is designed to get it through Louisiana into Texas. and 69 will cross the Mississippi River between Cleveland and Greenville ... which would only be the third bridge crossing the Mississippi River between I-20 in Vicksburg, and I-40 & I-55 in downtown Memphis (US 82/278 near Greenville, Miss. ... and US 49 near Helena, Ark.) being the other two). 269 was completed as a joint project with Tennessee's and Mississippi's DOT's cuz Memphis needed a eastern bypass for truck traffic from New Orleans to Nashville. same reason Birmingham finally will complete the north loop of the 459 bypass ring around the city.

10:57 ... Originally this route was supposed to connect to the I-40 bridge in downtown Memphis to continue into Arkansas. There are "stub ramps " on the I-40 bridge intended for the connection. However there is a pyramid in the way now, so I guess that will never happen. I forgot. Actually the "South" exit goes to southbound Thomas street the continues into downtown Memphis.

@@ControlCityFreak The section was built in the early 1970s and was designated I-240 including the exit to US 51 from the northwest turn. When the I-40 route through Overton Park was canceled, the "north loop of I-240 was re-designated I- 40. interesting fact The "north loop" was constructed on fill that was extracted from the Mississippi River. Much of this route is in the Wolf River flood plain.

Since this segment is the most disjointed of all of I 69, there’s no way I’m going to be able to do a complete list with exits. However, if the route is established, then I can make a truncated list. Northbound Shreveport out of Houston (maybe co-signed with Texarkana due to 369) until I 49. Memphis past I 49 until just before the I 55/I 269 interchange in Hernando. Evansville past I 40 in Memphis to just before Henderson city limits (co-signed with Clarksville, with Nashville added on overheads east of Paducah; also co-signed with Elizabethtown, with Louisville on overheads until the Western Kentucky Parkway) Southbound: Memphis once crossing over the Ohio River until before Future I 269 (co-signed with Clarksville, with Nashville on overheads, until I 169; and possibly Paducah until the I 24 split, unless Paducah stalls and never gets above 50k urban, in which case St. Louis) Shreveport from the Tennessee/Mississippi line until I 20. Houston from I 20 to Patton Village in Montgomery County. This segment looks like it’ll be very rural in nature, especially between Shreveport and Memphis. Even if the proposed route got closer to Pine Bluff with the 530 extension, I still probably wouldn’t include it as a control (the urban population is less than 50k, and is declining). El Dorado isn’t big enough for my standards, which will essentially make Arkansas a drive-thru state. Mississippi will be similar, as outside of the Memphis suburbs, it doesn’t go near anything bigger than Clarksdale or Cleveland, and again, none are remotely big enough under my standards…

I went to college in Monticello, AR a couple of years ago. I've seen these FUTURE I-69 signs and I'm excited for that town and surrounding areas to get some exposure and hopefully economic growth. I've already seen Monticello start to improve in its condition some in recent years. Sadly southeast Arkansas and western Mississippi are extremely poor and there is little opportunity to be found.

To my knowledge, there are two cloverleaf interchanges on I-10 in MS, a modified one at I-110/MS-67 for Biloxi, and another with US-46 for Gulfport. Both are full.

The Helena bridge was based on the old US-82 bridge at Greenville, MS, which was even scarier. I crossed it a few times. It was built by the WPA during the Depression.

Looks like a couple of states has issues with funding when it comes to build new roads. It's going to be years before I-69 is complete. Monticello AR had a bypass built. I think they going extend it more starting later this year.

In Memphis , I-40 goes into West Memphis AR , the road just goes south bound for a minute til it gets to I-240 then 69 will get on 240 also

*"The Great Oil Refinery Connector"* Houston to Shreveport to Memphis "near" Whiting, Indiana through South Central Michigan "near" Toledo. Massive Bridge (Gordie Howe) across the Detroit River and literally all of Detroit City from Southwest Ontario directly into Interstate 75, Michigan. Add Interstate 69 to that and an already booming Southern Michigan economy will boom even more as Michigan is a not minor oil producing State. Cutting lateraly across Indiana even including Indianapolis is still the middle of nowhere so no doubt very happy to have Interstate 69 already there plus will connect overland two massive Federal Express Air Freight Terminals between Indianapolis and Memphis. Leaving Memphis going South and West is yet again absolutely the middle of fucking nowhere so as a truck driver definitely a huge shout out to this project. "Free parking." Great news for Walmart, Dollar General and John Deere maybe Massey Ferguson as well. Need to get the Indiana Kentucky Bridge built first then the one over the Mississippi River as well. They would both need to be absolutely huge Bridges as well the former to handle huge amounts of traffic including Big Semis the second to be able to cross the entire breadth and depth of the Mississippi River that far South. Also somewhere in all of this middle of fucking nowhere will be Interstate 14 from South Central Georgia(East) crossing all the way to West Texas. Where these two would meet would be very valuable real estate long since purchased i imagine.

Looks like they would meet around Livingston, Texas. Whether this junction is built and meaningful with more or less finished roads happens in our lifetimes is probably the real question on land value there.

@ 4:11 - you skipped over the other complete section of I-69 (unsigned) in Tennessee: U.S. 51 around Martin to Dyersburg (which also bypasses central Dyersburg). To people incorrectly reading a map, it looks like an extension of I-155, but I-155 (concurrent with U.S. 412) has an "END I-155" sign posted at it's interchange with U.S. 51, as U.S. 412 continues east to Jackson, Tennessee. @ 4:18 - the "

Day 2 of asking you to cover Highway 401 in Ontario Canada. It is Ontario’s main highway as it runs from the Michigan border to just outside of the Quebec border near Montreal. It is also the busiest freeway in North America trough Toronto as it stretches up to 18 lanes. I think it’s a very interesting highway to cover.

Like, at the interchange with I-79, the control cities are Sharon and Clarion, not the much more sensible choices of Youngstown/Cleveland and New York City. I can’t wait for you to roast PennDOT! Before you do the southern Texas part 3 of I 69 there is a couple of video to check out. I got to them by typing " I 69 Construction Texas. Two Texas towns Nacogdoches and Diboll have drone videos. 1. Nacogdoches Us59/ loop 224 flyover project. 2. Diboll Texas new loop construction on Highway 59/ Interstate 69. No signs of construction on Google Street view. But if you play with Street level 2021 late year view. I'll find out next week how you did.

Todd, I was over in Henderson on US60 just before turning onto Wathen Lane. They have the place marked where the bridge will be going over the road there. The bridge will be built about a mile to the east of the Twin Bridges and just to the west of the confluence of the Green River into the Ohio River.

Can you do I-275 Michigan? That freeway has the worst Control City lineup. When it exits from I-75 near Monroe it’s signed for Flint even though it doesn’t go anywhere near Flint, only I-75 does. Plus, it gets co-signed with I-96 up to I-696, a weird co-signage. I-275’s main control cities should be Ann Arbor and Lansing instead as it’s signed along I-96 in Livonia, and it has an exit for M-14 which goes to Ann Arbor. I-275’s sole southbound control city (Toledo, Ohio) is fine but it’s northbound ones are wrong. You should also look into I-196 too. It’s southern segment doesn’t have Chicago as a control city even though it ends at I-94 which goes to Chicago.

My Control Cities South Henderson Nashville/Memphis ,(as this 8sbthe route to both places Little Rock/ Shreveport Houston (it seems toe at the state Line, that there would need to be an intermediate large city like Dallas) this is like coming into CA from OR on I-5 and getting Los Angeles as a destination when of course CA does give some intermediate cities (Sacramento, Stockton, and Tracy) and some large secondary and tertiary colors as control destinations (Santa Ana and Redding come to mind here,). North Little Rock Memphis/Nashville Henderson Evansville Indianapolis Fort Wayne Grand Rapids Sarnia, Ont. (Canada On the CONCURRENT SEGMENTS, THEY SHOULD DOUBLE SIGN THE CONCURRENT LEGS with 55, 240, 40, etc. Like in Indiana, I-69 is theoretically I-74 and ai-465;as well as several US and Indiana State Highws. As to Texas, there are 5 segments The Sten coming down from Arkansas', and three branches, 69E To Brownsville, 69C (which is probably the main line, and 69W to Laredo. I don't know which border crossing 69C will go to but ai suspect they will connect to I-2.

On the I-24 Concurrency, Since 24 defaults into 57 North, I would give Carbondale or Effingham or both as control destinations. Tennessee for some reason prefers to sign Cairo instead of Carbondale.

I know I have already said something similar on the I-49 video, but I think it’s time to admit Arkansas has higher priorities than building I-69. It recently proposed an interstate connecting I-49 to Tulsa. I do want that interstate, and for it to be called I-344, but not until I-49 is finished As such, let’s end I-69 at its interchange with 55 in Memphis and extend I-22 to Tunica. The part of 269 north of its interchange with 22 can be I-540, because it’s main purpose is to get I-40 traffic to Mississippi

Right now, Kentucky should be cut a bit of slack - some of those signs are from the old Parkway days, and, since technically I-69 basically currently ends at the IN and TN borders for the time being, not signing anything beyond Henderson and Fulton makes sense. I imagine once the new Ohio River bridge is done, north will be signed for Evansville or Indianapolis. As TN is being slow to build their portion on the area north of Memphis, who knows what southbound will have.

I bet I-69 in Arkansas will be completed before Tennessee even gets halfway finished. The interstate-grade parts of US 51 in Tennessee are very nice, though. Also, I agree with I-22 replacing the southern leg of I-269; of course, I'd rather I-30 be routed that way (splitting off of the new I-57 extension at Hope, AR, along US-278 towards Warren/Monticello to follow I-69).

I don't see where I-22 should be a part of I-69. I- 22 follows old route 78 between Memphis and Birmingham and there is a section between I-240 and the state line that is rather difficult to bring up to freeway standards because that section of Lamar (78) is heavily industrialized. There are some short segments that are done, but several miles still have intersections at grade and unlimited access between intersections. I-22 is complete between the Mississippi line and Birmingham.
