Great video Todd! I’m glad you included 196, because a lot of people living in western Michigan, including myself, use that interchange going towards Chicago. ALSO, thank you for sharing that older Michigan style billboard! That was so cool to see. As a native to Michigan I had no idea those even existed. If you could include exit 43A when you get to interstate 96, that would be awesome!! My home is only 2 miles from that exit.

The EB I-94 Minnesota welcome sign is about 1/4 mile past the Red River between the freeway and ramp for exit 1A! It's the same stone monolith as the other Minnesota welcome signs - one of my favorites. Glad to finally make it to I-94!

I-94 was my favorite freeway as a kid, too. My grandparents lived off it in the Milwaukee suburbs and my dad's work was off I-94 in Waukesha county, so most of the exciting places you go as a young child-- to grandma's, to Dad's work to see him for lunch, to the city to go to the zoo/museum/etc (either to Madison or Milwaukee) were done on I-94.

Out of all fragments of my 2024 summer road trip, I spent the least amount of time on I 94 in the eastbound direction. Westbound is another story entirely (and I think a worthy penultimate observations list before finishing off with I 95), but here, I only headed eastbound from the interchange with I 75 in downtown Detroit to the interchange with I 69 near the Canadian border. Along this entire route, the control was Port Huron. This is a real misstep by Michigan standards; not only is the immediate urban area only roughly 30k big, it’s technically an exurb of Detroit (Port Huron is the county seat of St. Clair County, one of six counties in the Detroit metro area). The control should be Sarnia. I wouldn’t start with Toronto until past London at the earliest, as past this city is a major split to Kitchener en route to Toronto, or to Hamilton en route to the Niagara Region. That, and Sarnia is triple the size of Port Huron. This may seem modest by American standards, but it is fairly big by Canadian standards.

@sschr15

Quick note about the I94/US52 concurrency: Minnesota doesn't bother to sign said concurrency anywhere. My best guess is twofold with the concurrency being hundreds of miles long (thereby incurring great increases in signage cost if both signs were present) and 94 west of the Cities being the replacement / upgrade to 52 As for the lack of control cities in, well, the Cities, one following I-94 is likely to end in the Cities rather than follow I-35, US 52, or other roads too far out. I don't see much use in defining control cities within the heart of the metro area thanks to the 694/494 loop, but for what it's worth, the loop has control cities where it matters most

The control cities for WI on 494/694 had Madison covered up and replaced with Eau Claire a few years ago, most exits show Eau Claire until you get to Eau Claire now. Also the welcome to MN Sign going west is at the rest area past the weigh station. You'll probably mention Exit 170 on I-95 in Virginia either way because it's the interchange with both 395 and the Capitol Beltway but that's the primary way to get off if you want to go to my grandparents' house. Alternatively, when we are coming back from vacation down south, we'll sometimes take Exit 160B for VA Route 123 as sort of a back door way to get out of the traffic. I think Eau Claire is large enough to warrant being a control city on I-94; it's also where I-94 meets up with US 53 (which is a major route, at least to the north) and WIS 29 (which is a major route to the east, although they actually meet outside of Eau Claire). However, I don't know about the Osseo thing, that was weird lol. Maybe a double billing of both Eau Claire and Madison would've been better.

Notes: Kind of glad to be out of New England as well for a video. I skipped out on watching most of the New England Interstates when they came out since I’m not familiar with any of the Northeast (have never been). The Minnesota welcome sign is just ahead of the bridge at Exit 1A. Minnesota’s reputation for terrible control cities continues. However, it’s the only state that I know of (besides Oregon) to put mileage signs on overpasses. Imo, Milwaukee should get mentioned more on I-94 in Western WI since it’s the most likely destination for travelers from Minneapolis. Traffic on 80 in Chicago is always heavy and full of trucks in the middle of the day. Many states still use the same welcome signs that they used in the 80s. Looking at the sign, I kind of wish Michigan did so too. Theodore Roosevelt NP is one the the most underrated parks in the US.
@markwilson4078
@markwilson4078 Жыл бұрын
I was just thinking about how bad Minnesota’s control cities are! Definitely Bottom 10 material right there, if not Bottom 5. The control cities on 90 and 94 are just abysmal almost all throughout. Also, you don’t miss a whole lot in the Northeast. We get one more trip to New England with 95 on the 2-digit interstates and that’s it. After that, it’s just Michigan, Maryland, PA, and NY before we get to Alaska and Hawaii. That said, we do get to see Rhode Island and Maine for our only time in 95, and at least we’re done with Vermont.

I think why Eau Claire is signed is because as a city of 69,000 people and having a decent sized public university (UW-Eau Claire), it’s the only bigger city on 94 between Madison & the Twin Cities. Personally wouldn’t mind seeing Madison on those signs in addition to Eau Claire.

@@SlowedByCinnamxn My thinking is that overheads could skip over the 'modest' population (St. Cloud and Eau Claire are good candidates for 'moderate') areas in favor of bigger ones, but mileage signs should prioritize the most immediate urban area (50k or bigger). We would refer to I-94 as the tri-state tollway, then the Edens Expressway, Kennedy, Dan Ryan expressway, Bishop Ford freeway, and the Kingery expressway. Don't necessarily like the thought of signing Toronto on the last stretch because unlike the Montreal ones, Toronto is a hefty drive away. There is so much population centers between Port Huron and Toronto with that bridge being one of only 3 access points to all of Southern Ontario without driving around a great lake. On February’s roadwaywiz, they went into the reasons for 494/694 having two numbers. Apparently they weren’t going to connect in the original plans, and planning started on them using the two different numbers. The plans were revised so that they did connect, but rather than reprint everything they continued using the two numbers. Also worth noting that 694 is the better bypass as it’s a lot shorter than 494, and also 494 had a gap in it into the 1980s whereas 694 was complete in the 60s.

I know this highway well. I live near the zoo interchange in Milwaukee. One thing I find funny about 94 in Milwaukee is that before it meets 894/43 near the airport, it’s going the exact opposite direction of where the sign says it’s going. So if you travel west 94 towards downtown, there’s a brief mile where you have to travel east before it curves towards the inner city.

The furthest I’ve been on I-94 was on the I-39/90 concurrency to Wisconsin Dells. Also notice how often I-94 comes into contact with US-12 too, as it’s the most frequent US Route it is concurrent with. Battle Creek as you know is where Kellogg’s world headquarters is, though they no longer give tours of the cereal factory unfortunately from what I heard. Also when you cross 8 Mile on I-94 it doesn’t go into the Detroit city limits yet. You cross into Wayne County, yes, but you cross into another Detroit suburb - Harper Woods. You cross into Detroit at the Moross Road exit (224A). Also I was wondering if you were gonna cover the M-10 (Lodge Freeway) interchange in the Westbound video, as it is very historically significant - the first completed interchange between freeways in the country. And possibly the exit for Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor. I did have those requests on my past Super sticker I believe. So you’re doing another ranking the state DOTs? Will that be for New England? Because we still haven’t been to Maine or Rhode Island yet.

Greetings from Chicago and [New York]! I think that I-94 between Tomah and Eau Claire is one of the prettier sections. Here, we skirt near the Driftless Zone, and there are some rolling hills, interesting rock formations, and, of course, lovely dairy farms. I-94 near Kalamazoo is also a nice stretch. I find it interesting how the foliage is so different on both sides of Lake Michigan. For the urban sections, I like the Lowry Hill tunnel in Minneapolis and The Kennedy between The [I-90/94] Junction and Hubbard's Cave in Chicago. It was supposed to come into Michigan from Ohio through the Toledo metro area using a newly built highway, then use US 223 from there to its junction with US 127 then use that highway to Grayling then be jointly signed with I-75 to the Canadian border at Sault St. Marie.

During my 2022 summer road trip, I covered close to everything on this highway (some in different directions). The only segments I haven’t been on are east of the Zoo Interchange to the Marquette Interchange; between the Chicago Skyway and the south end of the Tri-State Tollway; I 69 near Battle Creek to I 75 in downtown Detroit (the longest segment I haven’t seen); and the last miles through Port Huron. Western North Dakota was stunning to view, but there was one ‘negative’ experience in the state. About a half hour west of Bismarck, I got pulled over because my windows weren’t in accordance with North Dakota laws. Once it was confirmed my windows were legal under Nevada rules (my home state), I was let go with a warning for the rest of my time in the state (was resting in Bismarck that night). Long preamble aside, here’s my list: BISMARCK: BEGINNING-North Dakota Exit 127 (28.4 miles to the first exit with service to Bismarck; 29.7 miles to the first exit in Bismarck) FARGO: North Dakota Exit 127-North Dakota Exit 338 (9.8 miles to the first exit in Fargo) ST. Sarnia is about 3 times bigger, so it is satisfactory until close to the border. At that point, I’d leave the U.S. with London as the control; it and either Brantford and Hamilton or Kitchener and Guelph are BIG obstacles to pass before even APPROACHING Toronto. Besides, I can imagine there’s a big percentage of travelers going through Southern Ontario just as a shortcut around Lake Erie to Buffalo via St. Catharine’s. Considering that even by Canadian standards, these cities are pretty big (400k city in London and 500k city Hamilton), I don’t think signing Toronto is going to be helpful at all if west of London.
