Born and raised in Amarillo, moved to Houston in 1991. I get back there very occasionally. This was fun to see. They moved Cadillac Ranch further West when the city started building up around the original site. About 15 miles south on 27 is Canyon. If you head east out of there, the prairie opens up into a big canyon. Palo Duro Canyon has a wonderful history and there's an amphitheater out there that does the musical "Texas" nightly from June to August.

We thought we were in trouble when him, and another man suddenly walked up as we climbed around inside the cars. It's always exciting to get to Amarillo because I-40 between Tucumcari NM and Oklahoma City is extremely monotonous. Amarillo is there to break it up.
I've been to Amarillo once before. For the last 100 or so miles before Amarillo, you see billboard after billboard for the 72-ounce steak challenge. When you take an exit ramp in Amarillo on the way to a steakhouse, you're greeted with a sea of flyers advertising weight loss programs! Lose weight fast! Lose 30 pounds in 30 days! I wondered if there was a conspiracy afoot. The 72 ounce steak and all the fixings are 6 LARGE dinners to me. Then again, I've been avoiding all junk food and restaurant food for the past 2 years, so even a 12-ounce steak and 1/6 of the fixings might still be too much for me. It's been at least 2 years since I last consumed fast food, French fries, ice cream, candy, cake, pie, fried chicken, hash browns, or any of my other favorite fattening vices. (On the other hand, I've increased my consumption of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds, and probiotic foods.) Yes, I've been eating ultra-healthy due to the pandemic. The official recommendations just don't go far enough. I figure I need all the immune system support and anti-inflammatory support I can get. Yes, I'm eating as if the infamous Pulaski County, IL police were the Diet Police even though I'm skinny and have never had high blood cholesterol.
