yep I know absolutely no one who thinks that way. Don’t know where the interviewer got that idea from. In general I enjoyed his questions but he insisted way too much on the idea that Hamelin likes to play difficult stuff. Even of it were true, Hamelin had already said it wasn’t true and he was clearly uncomfortable with the interviewer’s insistence on that point.

@@MasmorraAoE Oh, I think it was worth pressing as it gave Hamelin a chance to really clarify the root of his association and desire to perform what's frankly some very dense and difficult stuff. I think it's still often very hard for someone who didn't grow up with Sorabji, Godowsky, Alkan, Feinburg and others to understand why another would be attracted to such works. And Hamelin, bless him, always to me comes off in some ways as a very simple/humble man in the most positive sense, so I think sometimes it takes some pressing to get him to think and respond to the possible and even probably perspectives that others who don't inhabit his world may hold as this most certainly doesn't seem to be something he fixates on or maybe even consciously acknowledges on a regular basis. Besides, in my opinion, it laid the groundwork for the section of the interview referring to composition and very well explained Hamelin's choice of compositional idiom.

Hamelin is the best example of someone who is at the pinnacle of human achievement but doesn't look it. Possibly the greatest technique in the world yet he looks like an accountant. 😂

Why is there not a sight reading competition because everyone professional pianists, members of the public attacks my skill as natural to everyone. If this is so, why deny me then? Given that Liszt, Richter and ogdon were congratulated for it. People are unappreciative.

I'm surprised a little at Hamelin depreciating Alkan, which perhaps quite objective of him, as musicians I think are more likely to exaggerate the value of a composer they are associated with then fairly estimate them, but Alkan, in his best works, is comparable to Beethoven and Chopin, and inferiority comes mostly from the few truly great pieces that he wrote.

I do not think chopin is the greatest composer for the piano in the collective sense. But certainly particular pieces stand out in perfection.

Are all the actions of love calculated and of benefit? Do all people love the right way? No. But people let it happen. Becausecpeople are not robots. So why is interpretation required in every performance of a piece? Sometimes, a bar of music can heal the soul, or even a chord. But demanding performances of certain requirements can be detrimental. It cuts the musicians MOTIVATION. Music should inspire us like love inspires ppl to be kind.but kindness is not perfection of love. It is understanding the role of love.

I cannot see the appeal in Lyapunov's etudes, which seem like a collection of harmonies that weren't even daring for their time, while lacking any interesting melodic content.

I detest competitions. Vanity vanity vanity. Just Play the music for the public. And most pianists can not be true to themselves because they fear loosing marks or points. judges do not want them to play unheard pieces. Sack these judges. That is why you have the law/rules. To impose order and authority. It gwts rather boring hearing the same pieces. Life is short. Respect all composers. Those that don't are like parents of arranged marriages saying, you will only hear this or that. How oppressive.

For marc andre hamelin to make a claim that alkan is not comparable to chopin would mean he has to have played every piece by Alkan to scientifically justify it. I am not doubting he has not but he has given no evidence he has looked. And science has peer review. Other pianists, lecturers, laymen etc would need to look at decide and discuss.

It seems that the interviewer does not understand that for a great artist virtuoso technique is not an end, but a means of expression. Franz Liszt also spoke about it. It's so natural for Mark! But the interviewer insulted and confused by this question about the technique. As Bud is jealous and blames for the fact that mark can play. He himself said about the two camps? Markie is a virtuoso and philosopher. And he asks questions about technique, showing the limitations both in art and in the personality of the pianist-artist.. Shamefully

Music does not have to appeal to you to play it. Take the sermon on the mount by christ. Love your enemies. A composer may not have the requirements you wish for you to take an interest but neither does an enemy or neighbour. Christ said love thy neighbours. Composers are our neighbours. We need to embrace our desire for CONDITIONS we set on people and remove them if people are to trust us and if classical music wants to survive intact.

The questions were a bit arrogant and intrusive. It's like he was trying to overpower Hamelin, who responded with grace and patience.
