That’s lovely. The music industry has really changed nowadays it’s great the young generation still have taste aha. Im from a town near where they grew up and have an alright voice but was told ‘the music industry isn’t for people like you anymore Essex is done’. Quite sinister and ironic given how there were theories that snobbery towards Essex was a reason they haven’t been appreciated as much as they should have. Things don’t change it seems.

You don't seem to realize that your statement says nothing else than that you think that Depeche Mode makes "real music". You are trying to backup a claim with something that doesn't back up it up whatsoever. I was a backstage security guard for Depeche Mode show back in mid 90's in Houston, TX. They gave me strict orders to make sure everyone had a backstage pass showing at all times. When a group of 3 guys walked in, I saw one didn't have a pass so I stopped him. He said "I'm with the band!" in a snobby way. The other guy tapped me and said "he's ok." I found out later it was Andy Fletcher. When the show ended, Dave Gahan walked over to me where I was posted and gave me a concert t-shirt and thanked me for the good job I did - I guess he got word. I wish I still had that shirt but I gave it away that night because I wasn't as big as a fan as I am now.

@@smalfie1214 I worked for 7 years for Warner Borthers. Before meeting a big star (Alanis, Phil Collins, AC/DC, R.E.M.) I always felt very nervous. But they were usually very very nice. It´s those who wanna be like them that like togive you a hard time. For the Czech music awards we managed to bring in R.E.M. and Cher at the same time for a promotional performance at the Awards. We were 4 people, 2 taking care of the band, 2 taking care of Cher. I was responsible for her press conference - a fucking nightmare coz I had to make sure no one asked about plastic surgery.Of course, the first question was asked by an idiot from a tabloid. I have prepared a couple of questions for the translator to ask just in case. There was no personal contact with Cher. She said, thank you when we welcomed her and thank you and good-bye when leaving. Spent most of the time in her hotel. Then I receive a call from the R.E.M. team. They were having dinner with the band. We went there with Cher´s manager who was a very nice guy. Man, I was nervous again but R.E.M. were so nice, made all the stress go away. Then I ran out of my cigarettes. Michael Stipe noticed and offered to roll a tobacco cigarette for me. And he would do it for the rest of the night. At the end they invited allof us to Berlin to Waldbuhne to see their gig. Once i fucked up. David Byrne was playing Prague and I was responsible for his press conference. I had prepared everything, then I arrived at the wrong hotel. I arrived at the press conference late. David Byrne and his manager were cool about it. They said, "relax, man, it happens". A UK band Morcheeba were big at the time and they did pretty well in Czech republic. Their guitar player invited me for sushi. I drove the singer and her two kids to a festival outside Prague once. She rolled a joint and asked me to smoke it with her.I say, hey I am driving. She says, but you do smoke weed, right." Affirmative. Have you ever driven stoned. Affirmative. She says, I know you are a good driver so join me. So I did. She liked the stuff. You see, everytime Morcheeba were to come over I was the one getting ganja for them. I even had a dinner with Anton Corbijn once. At a friend´s house. This friend used to be in charge of the Depeche Mode fan club magazine Bong and a friendof Anton´s. We were only 5 people at her house at the dinner. Anton told me a lot of interesting things about Depeche Mode. The most interesting was a comparison between DM and U2. Anton said U2 had been obsessed with being the biggest band in the world. Depeche could have been much more commercially sucessful but they didn´t fucking put much effort to it. Also,Anton said that had any of U2 had a drug problem the rest of the band would have stopped everything and come to him and be there to help him. A catholic mentality. Depeche have this protestant, cold, everybody responsible for himself roots. Also, the diference between doing videos for DM and U2. DM are given Anton´s ideas. They do whatever they are told and then let Anton work. On the other hand, a U2 video is nightmare. Bono is a control freak and drives Anton nuts because of 2 seconds in the video. I asked Anton the big question, "what is Fletch´s jonb in the band?" He is Martin´s best mate", replied Anton. That is it. I also was lucky to have a 20minute chat with Alan Wilder in 2010. He was doing a radio interview for a local independent radio station. The radio started in 1990 and since then managed to be totally independent. No playlists. Every DJ plays whatever he wants. They have a stable listenership of about 40k. I thought, those surely didn´t think of documenting Alan Wilder´s in the studio. So, I give thema call and say, hey,I can come and take some pictures. Both radio DJ´s interviewing Alan said he was a very intelligent, very down-to-earth, articulate..just a pleasure to do an interview with. Here are my pictures, pls, don´t critisize them, I am an amateur: www.depechemode.cz/aktualita/alan-wilder-radio-1/

I wish that the powers that be could find an interviewer that really knows how to talk to these guys. DM is the greatest of all time.

Felt very emotional watching this. Great interview, with a great band. The RG interjections, very much supported by the David Bowie stories, added greatly to this wonderful interview.

Good on you for getting rid of the negative crap in your life, Dave. You've come a long way, mate, and you've got so much good work to show for it. I had no idea Andy Fletcher was such a good raconteur!
