He had a great voice for sure. I mean Lots of singers have technically great voices. But the emotion and longing he managed to put across was peerless, and just cut through to your soul. His voice just carried the songs. Not many musicians would be brave enough to strip a song to its bones the way he did. In a way it reminds of what Nick Drake did with Pink Moon. I can tell Molina was a person who valued authenticity, that just comes across at a gut level from his work. You just absolutely know it when you hear it. One of my favourites songs is ‘Spectral Alphabet’ from ‘Pyramid Electric Co.’ (The first Molina solo record). I love the line “Heavy Spanish moss. A hanging veil across the Graceland gate. The ancestors of the world think it looks great.” That song is dreamlike. I love boundless sense of space. It just takes you to another world. Even before he died I believed it would live forever as a timeless classic.

I took a modern art history class 10 yrs ago while I was still at my jc. Of all the artists we were shown, there was one artist that resonated with me most. That artist was Eward Hopper. Jason Molina makes me feel the same way Edward Hopper's paintings do. Their style is simple, their content is profound, and invokes both love, missed love and loneliness. Despair. Familiar, yet entirely unique. Thanks, Jason.

My favorite quote from Molina: "I feel a lot of guilt about the freedom that being an artist provides. I ask myself, `Why am I not the guy emptying the trash, why am I the guy who is watching the guy empty the trash?'"

The real truth about it is no one gets it right, the real truth is we all have to try! Listen .
