From academia, I mainly miss the times when I was an assistant for inorganic chemistry labs teaching to junior college students and when I was lecturing high school students on summers. Lectures by Walter Lewin. They will make you ♥ Physics. Obviously, you are right!!! I loved physics even before I met you in KZbin and I must say I felt alone... Nobody around me valued this extraordinary discipline as much as I did! The contemporary technologies about astrophysics research is fascinating! But nobody knows about it! The James Webb project unfortunately didn't reach the broader public yet. CERN is for few people. ITER is hardly known. I think an achiever like you must be involved in getting this knowledge be spread to general population and future voters! Trump's environmental policy must be eliminated from mainstream same-minded politicians who ignore elementary physics! In our technological age people must be able to decide through knowledge!

@lecturesbywalterlewin.they92597 жыл бұрын
Wrong science by people who dig their heels in can be and should be criticized. I did that also successfully in several scientific papers - that's what science is for. You can read about this in my book (with Warren Goldstein) "For the Love of Physics". By the way I never eat popcorn, don't like it.

I have a dear friend of mine that goes to Harvard and he always jokes about "The technical school down the street." I always laugh at that joke and how MIT and Harvard view each other in general.
@lecturesbywalterlewin.they92597 жыл бұрын
Of course I am familiar with that. That's kind of a game played at MIT and at Harvard. Of course we all at MIT respect Harvard enormously and Harvard respects MIT and for GOOD reasons. That's very different from scientific matters. If anyone in the world digs her/his heels in on an important scientific issue (in this case X-ray Bursts) which is clearly WRONG, then that should be made clear to the world regardless of the University of that person. It just so happens that this person was at Harvard.

hello sir. my name is priya.its quite weird question. I have completed my 12 th std and I have also passed my engg entrance exam with good marks. i have plan from 9 th std that I will prefer research side as career in physics but now I have got admission is Cummins clg of engg in computer engg(not yet confirm) which has good campus and placement after btech. my parents are also saying me that I should prefer engg and now I am completely confused. i have searched on internet most of sites says that india has very poor research sources(even so called iits ,ISSER )most of my friends say that if you choose research side then there's no opportunities in india you have to go aboard which is financially very hard to my family. sir you have seen lots chaos about your students career. you have guide them. should I choose research side(in physics. i really likes physics. i like to think on its concept ) or engg (which is showing me atleast good and stable job or a good package)? I hope you will reply.
@lecturesbywalterlewin.they92597 жыл бұрын
The best University in India is ranked 328 in the world (IIT Delhi). That is indeed low. The other IIT's are even lower. However, if this is the best available within your reach (also financial reach) you have little choice. Of course, you should try to be admitted in one of the top 50-100 in the world. If you are an outstanding high school student that may work. If you are even better then outstanding you may get fellowships. You have quite a few years to go before this becomes an issue for you. During the next 4 years, your thinking will evolve. Write me again in 2 years. With some luck I may still be alive then.All the best. cwur.org/2014.php

in this interview you mention that you focused almost solely on lecturing during the time periods when you taught large classes and that each of your lectures takes a huge amount of time to prepare for. Given that professors who focus on lecturing rather than spending all their time on research during their pre-tenure years are almost always rejected for their tenurship (at least, from what I've heard as an undergrad), how were you able to dedicate large amounts of time to lecturing in addition to your research?
@lecturesbywalterlewin.they92597 жыл бұрын
My research had a large momentum (well funded) and I had several excellent Graduate students with whom I met once a week when I lectured; they kept our research going!! I also negotiated with the Physics Dept to always get one teaching term off before or after I lectured.

Lectures by Walter Lewin. They will make you ♥ Physics. Thanks for the quick response! Did you ever teach any particularly large classes that prevented you from doing your own research (you mentioned this in your 8.01x lecture 34.) during your early years at MIT, or were those classes taught only by more experienced professors at MIT? I ask because I am curious as to how you handled the balance between your lectures and research during the earlier years and what impact(s) gaining experience and momentum in your research had on how you balanced the two. Thank you for your time!
@lecturesbywalterlewin.they92597 жыл бұрын
I joined the MIT faculty in June 1966. I was recitation instructor for many years. I believe my first major lecturing course for 300+ students (8.03) was in 1972.

Lectures by Walter Lewin. They will make you ♥ Physics. Thank you for your responses! Your feedback has helped me understand the balance between research and lecturing a bit better. Professor, In one of your interview, you were talking about your preparation time for a lecture as 40 hrs. My question to you is that do you write your script and practice from it as part of your preparation?
@lecturesbywalterlewin.they92597 жыл бұрын
A typical preparation time for 1 lecture is 60-80 hr. No I do not write a script. But I dry run all my lectures 3 times before I give the lecture. 2 weeks before, 1 week before and at 6 AM of the day of the lecture. Every 5 min I have a LARGE time mark in my lecture notes (starting with 50 min, going down to zero). I have a large digital clock on the lecture desk which is set at 50 min when I start the lecture and it is counting down. Thus at ANY moment during my lecture I know within about 1 minute where I am and where I am supposed to be. Thus I NEVER overrun, I never have to do an interesting demo in haste with a sloppy explanation. I typically finish my lectures within 1 minute of 50 min. Of course during the first dry run, it ALWAYS takes near 60-70 min. I then have to do careful surgery as changes are needed. By the time it is 6 AM in the morning of the day I give the lecture I am always well synchronized between my time marks and the digital clock. My lectures have therefore become performances (like an actor on the stage). my secrets are: *imagination, go outside the box with examples and with demos. I do often demos that will make them sit on the edge of their seats. make the students laugh at times, make them cry, make them stop breathing, even make them wet their pants at times. confront them as much as possible with experiences in their own lives. where possible I include a student in a demo. I also do demos in which I take risks I never become boring. I make them look through the equations so make the eqs come alive I always keep their attention with my clarity, sense of humor and my LOVE for Physics. I radiate my enthusiasm - it's contagious. I can make ANYONE love physics and one of my "famous" quotes is: "if you hate physics it's only because you had a bad teacher".*

Tomorrow is the 29. January. Your birthday. I think, I know of what you are thinking about. In your interview you explained, that your family was a victim of the NS. Here in Germany we have many historical reports about Auschwitz and the liberation of the Jews this days. Walter, I really hope, that you will have some good hours nevertheless tomorrow. What do you think, what should I do as a German born in the 1960ies ? Perhaps I'm wrong, but I tried because of Auschwitz not to doubt about the people in our present, who tell me their stories about maltreatment. It is better beeing wrong in believe as beeing indifferent. It is a second crime to ask a victim if there is any reason for the violence. What makes me crazy is the "rebirth" of Nazi propaganda in some groups. But I think, nevertheless you and me too have the right to have good and happy hours. Walter, have a nice day tomorrow!
