L’idée de la libre circulation des personnes et des biens et la suppression des frontières artificielles était déjà les préoccupations de mon Président. Quelle merveille d’apprendre ces choses.

The interviewers were trying to trap him into admitting if he was leaning East, i.e, the Soviet Union. Post independence, Africa had men of high calibre. Then the soldiers came and dagbaru everything. Nkrumah, Zik, Balewa, Olympio, Lumumba, etc

Fluent in English Ann's French, he was well positioned to lead the nascent republic of Togo and indeed, Africa. It's so disheartening that the military didn't let democracy strive and just wasted lives in silly coups.

Standing armies has been the bane of republican government. The Founders of America 🇺🇸 one this and Sylvanus Olympio of Togo 🇹🇬 knew this. Hence at independence, the country only had 250 soldiers and refused to expand it under pressure. Those soldiers shot him dead at the American embassy.

At 8:10 Max Lerner asks Olympio about Nkrumah's expansionism. What Lerner didn't know was that earlier that year, in May 1962, Olympio already had agreed upon a (somewhat secret) defense pact with France in case of an invasion by Ghana. Look at this smile of that guy when he spouts on about "cooperation of African States"! I love Olympio's swag...
