Having been fortunate to have visited Carlos Gracie Senior's house in Terespolois - having meals with him and talks with him (through an interpreter) I can verify he was indeed a special man ... one who everyone respected deeply.

Carley was my first jiu jitsu instructor in 1996 at the old sf school on Broadway which was kinda secretive back then. No one was allowed to go there to watch or observe. You had to meet with a lady named Anne to sign up and join at an office located a block away. The price was $170 a month for 3 days a week MWF nights only and an optional early open mat class on Saturdays. Very pricey but it was the only Gracie school there at the time. I wanted to train at Ralph’s school in Mountain View but it was too far. Carley was teaching every class while I was there and almost every class he’d talk a lot of shit about Rorion and Helio. And every interview I’ve watched and read through the years he tells those same stories the exact same way. I thought it was very entertaining and interesting. Carley was very nice and approachable but everyone hated his girlfriend Anne who handled the business stuff. A year or two later Ralph opened the school on Valencia St in SF so I creonced and joined there cuz Ralph was my favorite Gracie cuz he was vicious in EFC. And I almost forgot there was also a Rorion certified Gracie JJ school in the sf mission district at a karate school run by two guys who were blue belts under Rorion. Before switching to Ralph’s I actually joined that certified school for 3 months cuz I couldn’t afford Carley’s price. Then Charles Gracie opened a school in Daly City then I creonced over there for a few months. I felt bad leaving cuz Charles was really cool but I just had to be part of Ralph’s team. Thanks for interviewing Carley. Brought back fun memories. I feel very lucky I got to experience those early days of Gracie BJJ in Northern California.

Carly was my first jujitsu teacher as well but different location. It was a new school and I had private lessons with Carly and Rodrigo. Eventually Joe Moriera. Came to the school. I was hoping they would talk about how Carly did against Rolls Rickson He seems to speak like he’s one of the best if not the best that ever lived. But then again, there’s a lot I do like about this conversation to her. Happy that I heard it. I believe what really made me believe is when he talked about how when his dad died that’s when all the hyenas attacked Ouch life humans.

I met Carley in 2002 but the location and pricing were both factors that made me choose Charles Gracie 's school in Daly City. I think Cristiano was a blue or purple belt at the time. Happy to see he is a black belt now running the San Mateo location.

What a beautiful interview. I hope there is a part 2. Well, I'm 51 now and grew up in Petropolis, Brazil. Came to America in 1989, been in Jiu Jitsu all my life, after a few breaks here and there due to life intervening, US Military service, divorce, children etc. As a kid in Brazil I remember vividly and sadly this part of the culture, where a family full of incredibly gifted people gets splintered over little disagreements that, due to our at times explosive personalities develop into generational feuds. My own family expereienced this. Anyhow, thank you for bringing us the words of such a giant of Gracie Jiu Jitsu. Oss.

We need a book from this man. This is an amazing story. I read Breathe by Rickson Gracie which was incredible. I would argue this story is one ever practitioner needs to hear.

I went to Carleys school for a few months left and went to Ralphs. Kirt was the main teacher there and I will say Ralphs school was a world class school and it blew Carleys school away. There was no comparison. But, I will say Carley was a very nice man

Fascinating stories I feel I know a lot. I’ve been around this whole life pretty much half of it. The new information maybe I heard this before but it’s sunken this time will good. Specially, when Carlos Senior passed away and the hyenas attacked. Ouch I believe it then again, Carly can be shifty himself so I can see through it all.

Had carley taught the ground grappling aspects of bjj rather than the standing old Japanese jiujitsu techniques wed be 50 years deep into bjj development in US. There'd be a bunch of US red belts and Id of most likely taken the art as a kid in 86

I love JJ, but these childish war stories are ridiculous. They exist in other martial arts too. Heck, after 50 years of training and teaching, I have plenty of my own stories. The concept of training to also train your mind. Ego is never eradicated, but it should fade with experience. Whenever I hear a teacher bragging about who he was better than, I switch off. They did not elevate enough to master themselves…the ultimate fight that we all have is with ourselves. An Olympian English Judoka (who will want to remain nameless) demonstrated what a true master is. He won’t tell the story, but he had fun teaching the Gracie’s and other BJJ exponents a gentlemanly lesson in humanity as he arm barred any that cared to roll with him including the big names. He always said it is not about fighting, but a lifetime of learning how not to fight externally or internally.

Well said. Full mastery is mastering the ego. As I’m learning in BJJ, we are learning to not fight the opponent but her/his will to fight. Some families are addicted to fighting. (Mine included, not pointing fingers). There are at least 2 sides to every family feud. Release the ego and shake hands and tell the full story, for goodness sake. It would be a world class story, even still I enjoyed Carley’s storytelling ---but the interviewer gave Carley one minute at the end to “say whatever he wanted to share” generous man. 😉🔥thank you

Lots of mistruths here. Twisted truths at best, but I guess it's his perspective... Carley coming up with the idea for UFC laughable. His Bruce Lee story is also hilariously false. If Carley was right regarding his dispute with Helio, then why did his family turn against him? Why did his mother turn against him? Why did he have to leave Brazil? The family didn't turn against Helio and Rorion... They didn't have to flee the country. If Helio was trying to find someone to beat Carley, then why didn't he ask Rickson or Relson? Or even Rolls, who Helio trained and adopted as his own son. Again, lots of mistruths here.

It wasn't the entire family, which is extremely large, that was against Carley. He himself said that some of his brothers were on his side. Helio Gracie had immense power over the family and that's why many were against Carley, even though he was right. Helio Gracie was a man known for having an uncontrollable temper and inability to admit when he was wrong and many in the family knew that going against him would be a bad idea.

Helio Gracie was a disgrace! He beat up Carley’s mother Geni Gracie and would torment the boys and a was a cheater. Helio was not the founder of Gracie Jiu Jitsu either Rorion!
