It's so great hearing the perspective of a non-traditional student. I don't think it's talked about enough -- though it's so important to know that there are many pathways to get into medicine!

Thanks for featuring your friend in one of your vlogs. This has really helped me on my discernment process. I'm curently studying Psychology too but just recently decided to pursue Medicine. So, this is somewhat reassuring for me. Thank you so much to both of you! And I hope that you both will do well as doctors in the future! 🙌

Hey Jamie! Thanks for putting this interview up! I am currently a non traditional applicant and went through a post bacc program as well. I definitely concur with pretty much everything Dania said. It is a MUST that people interested in post bacc programs look at the success rate of the programs and the reviews before applying. Some schools may not always give you the support that they claim to so its better to know that before entering. I think another thing to add is to try to find a post bacc that grants you a Masters degree. I think on top of boosting your science GPA and getting the letter of recommendation, it would be nice to get a degree after putting in all your hard work. Not too many people can say they got a bachelors, masters and medicine degree, which I think is pretty cool! Good luck to the both of you! Can't wait to see where your guys match! ^.^

I went to one of the masters programs at a university in Philly. The program helped me get a deeper understanding of the sciences and it provided a lot of med school prep. I do think that you had to come in with a good grasp on some MCAT subject topics but overall, the programs offered a lot of opportunity to take med school like courses.

This was really helpful! I always wanted to do medicine but unfortunately was not in the best environment as a spring chicken. Long story short-I went to college and did what my advisors told me to do. I became a lawyer in my very early twenties and knew I didn’t want to do it. I was lucky enough to have no debt because I was a scholarship kid but now in my mid twenties I’m determined to do my own thing and live my life. I’m so lost as to whether I should do a whole new degree or post bac program.

Thank you for making this video! I studied English as an undergrad and worked in marketing for a while. I realized after working in marketing for some time that marketing wasn't the field for me. I considered other fields, but nothing truly appealed to me or made me excited. However, I was always drawn to medicine, but I feared taking the required courses. I'm coming over my fear, and I'm taking the courses to get into med school. It's good to hear other non-traditional applicants. It makes me feel less alone!

Omg! Love Your videos ! This video definitely helped me come to the conclusion that I want to go into medical school! I majored in social work and then went on to get my masters in social work as well. While there I ended up doing research and getting accepted for a publication. I use to always get down on myself because I did not initially major in pre-med or biology or chemistry as a undergrad.

Hi Jamie! Thank you for interviewing a non-traditional applicant. It's comforting to know that the name of the school isn't everything when medical schools are considering applicants. That being said, do you have any med school friends who started off at community college? Although I attend a large university now, I took a few core science courses at a community college and often worry that medical schools will look down on me for that choice. Any insights you or your friends have about that topic would be much appreciated:) Thanks again for this video!

Hey, try not to worry too much about where you attended community college compared to a traditional 4-yr undergrad education. I’m a non-traditional student myself (38 yrs old) and at the end of my first semester in medical school. I started out at a community college to get an associate degree in a field I could use for work. I later went back to the same school for more core courses and then transferred to a local 4-yr school. Last year I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in biology and went on to apply to medical school. I started this year so you can definitely do it! The thing schools are most concerned about are your grades and GPA at whichever schools you’ve attended. Graduate and medical schools really do look for a variety of *qualified* students, including non-traditional people like me. Keep doing your best to reach your goals!

What's it like starting medical school at a mature age? Are you the oldest in your class?
@boriquachick2602
@boriquachick2602 6 жыл бұрын
Kate T Is this question for me? If so, I’m not the oldest in my class. There are one or two others who have me beat by 2-3 yrs. The current M2s have told me there’s a student who is almost 50 in their class! Mad kudos to that person for managing this journey at their age 👍🏼. One of the M3s was a high school classmate of mine who is my same age. Honestly, age shouldn’t keep someone from a goal if it’s something for which you are passionate.

@audrey1966

it stands for "post-baccalaureate" student. once you graduate from college, you're considered a "baccalaureate," aka you have your bachelor's degree. but, if you feel that you need additional coursework either to boost your GPA or to take classes you've never taken before, you can apply to a post-bac program to do so. it's kinda confusing because post-bac students are usually treated as graduate students, but since most post-bac programs don't give you an official degree at the end, you're in this grey area between an undergraduate student and a graduate/medical student. also, not all post-bac programs are aimed at medicine or even health professions at large. they can be in engineering, etc. hope that helps!
