In awe of this guy... he deserves to be honoured even though he probably thinks he's "just" doing his job. The single minded determination to understand what he's doing is incredibly admirable. We need more of that in all kinds of walks of life.

This man is a credit to his profession. And a terrific surname to match. Well done to whoever trained him.

As someone who flies regularly, it is heartening to know that there are pilots out there with the kind of skills and knowledge of Capt de Crespigny. What he describes about abnormal situation management is what is happening in the oil industry, the responsibilities and hazards have not changed, but the technical complexity of the processes and the control systems has increased substantially over the past 40 years.

His middle name is Champion. Sums him up really. One of the best pilots you could ever find, anywhere.

What a captain! But I never knew Benny from Abba interviewed him.

Outstanding briefing. After watching the video of the recreation of this event, there were two Check Pilots giving Check Rides to the Captain and First Officer, always wondered, did they pass there check rides :)

It goes without saying 2 pilots flying qf 32 on that day couldn't have more rigorously being checked out , in my humble opinion not only they saved the day but passed with flying colours ,God bless them all especialy Captain Richard and first officer Mark ,pride of Qantas and and Ozzy heroes.

This is what people need to consider when they are looking around for the cheapest flights. The level of training, and skill on the flight deck is what you should base your decisions on. Carriers like QANTAS, British Airways, etc are worth the premiums you pay, because when the proverbial hits the fan, like in the case of QF32, you have people like Captain de Crespingny in command. Always remember, take-offs are optional, and landings are mandatory.

Wow, this guy is riveting to listen to, such enthusiasm about the workings of his aircraft. I still think they were incredibly lucky to not catch fire and burn up before they got anywhere near landing considering the large pieces of super heated shrapnel that went tearing through the fuel tank. Being a machinist myself I find it shocking that the "severely on the piss" counter bored oil supply pipe got through all the check and assembly processes and anywhere near an aircraft engine, one of my tutors did his apprenticeship with Rolls Royce aero and from what he told me, back in his days they were incredibly anal about perfection in component manufacturing......sad to see such apathy creeping into even the pinnacle of engineering and amazingly lucky Airbus didn't have their first A380 hull loss because of it.

Boy oh boy any time I fly I would love to be with this man in charge....he really knows his aircraft and listening to his interview it makes me feel that yes I would be in good hands and deserves all the plaudits he received along with his fellow officers on QF32

To control the functions of hydrolics and flaps and slats, engineers have to invent a angular positionning sensors for the captain to monitor instantly with its automation of flight control by wire on the E-cam video board, for a better monitoring in case of electrical failure and the status of all flaps of their angular positioning to prevent rolling in emergency.

A Amperage sensor on all the electrical wiring of the hydrolics would alert the pilot of the location of the severed system in case of rupture. A electrical e-cam will summarize for the pilot to overlook the system instantly in emergency.
