One of my favorite DOPs. Really inspired by how he's used Ektachrome throughout his career. Thanks for having him on.

this is so valuable and beautiful. I hope Sher keeps on doing this. such an insightful conversation. thanks a lot for this. the phenomenon of people on set constantly staring at their cellphones has become epidemic now. it is just so unnerving and annoying. if you have the time on a film set to check your cellphone every two minutes, you obviously have nothing to do and hence are dispensible.

I’d say it’s less that they are dispensable as a position, more that they are just disinterested in the content; which can be incredibly demoralizing for a director, producer, actors, cinematographer or production designer. The job is to hurry up and wait, rinse and repeat. During that wait time, when I was more on the G&E side, I’d use that time to study the setup, anticipate the next shot/ equipment needed, look ahead to future scenes on the call sheet to brainstorm or anticipate how we might need to shift gear to be in the right places. Near constant problem solving. The crew who don’t see this time to study and improve their own knowledge are doing themselves a huge disservice by choosing to close their world in on a cell phone instead of finding something to learn along the way.
