At the risk of over-commenting, oh wow, her anecdotes about Edmund White got me all verklempt and make me want to re-read and read more by him. And the shy way you asked the Alice in Wonderland question and the way she appreciated it....❤️❤️

Thank you Eric for this amazing interview. Your genuine interest and affection for Ms. Oates are refreshingly on display. It was wonderful to hear her express her reflections on Susan Sontag and discuss her novel “Blonde.”

In 1996 I wa one of the interpreters at a conference on the topic "Europe" at the Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon. One of the speakers was Susan Sontag and as she didn't speak Portuguese and her French was not that strong she listened to me and my colleague all of the time. So basically I whispered into her ear. The other speakers were Edgar Morin, André Glucksman (who was brilliant) and Simon Shama. It was so interesting to hear JCO talk about her. I do remember one thing from that conference which was she was extremely interested in what André Glucksman had to say and they had a wonderful dialogue. Thanks for the memories!

Ha! I just asked the beginning question after seeing the first part of interview! So please disregard my note. I am excited to read her work. I like how she talks about her characters as if they are living- I think it's a sign of someone who is meant to write. Such a fascinating interview. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you Eric. This is the best interview I’ve seen on KZbin. Very insightful and I was as interested in your questions as JCO’s answers. I hope you plan more interviews with authors in the future on this platform.

Really enjoying this interview!! I would encourage readers to read her older works like “Them,” “ Do with me what you will,” “Childwold,” “”Expensive People,” etc.

So good! I have a JCO short story collection on my shelves to read but Winterthurn and Blonde both sound amazing, as does her new novel. Looking forward to part 3!

I think you'll be blown away by Winterthurn and Blonde. But her stories are so fascinating too because she often experiments with style much more while touching on a wide range of subject matter.

Really enjoyed this installment. Great idea, to break it up into 3 parts. Allows time to ponder things and is easier to go back and re-listen to some bits. Now, if I can only get on with some writing and resist tempation to pick up one of her books!

Reading Blonde right now and am wondering if either of you has seen Ladies of the Chorus. Marilyn is absolutely beautiful before the persona of breathy voice and pouty lips. Her voice is completely natural and her singing very good and her beauty prior to tbd little fixes stunning. That is the real girl before Hollywood changed her. I wonder where this film follows in relation to Asphalt Jungle. Yes. Ladies of the chorus 2 years before Asphalt. She has a large role and doesn't seem shy or affected at all. Really enjoyed the movie.
