Good interview. Just saw "Sound of Metal" myself, and I agree with the outdated information. I saw that remark about what "Joe" said about CIs leading to exclusion from deaf community. You are correct, deaf community doesn't exclude on basis of hearing aids or CIs. There was a short period where that was controversial-- my generation was in the first wave of guinea pigs and a lot of people got CIs that didn't work for them before they realized born-deaf teens or adults were a bad demographic. There are ethical concerns about CIs on babies, yes. It's an irreversible surgery and you want to be sure the diagnosis is right first (many babies fail BAER at birth but hear fine later on.) and it really sucks that hearing aids aren't covered but CIs are. CIs are not a feasible option for many people and for instance, tactile hearing aids went totally off the market in the US-- with CIs so popular the market was crushed. Oh well. To me what actually happened in the movie was that Ruben was there on a grant from a church, and Joe chose to kick him out because he didn't want any conflicts and was a bit upset at Ruben for leaving to do a CI surgery in secret anyway. I think Joe saw a lot of his younger self in Ruben, and got angry at Ruben for acting like an addict-- lying and trying to use Joe. Ruben was so focused on his goals that he didn't stop to think how he might hurt others, or how he was hurting Joe with what he was saying as his excuses -- and Joe had to give him consequences for his behavior. One person does not speak for the whole community.
