Tom Ripley shows an intense passion for the arts, and intense lust and romantic desire for Dickie Greenleaf. Psychopaths are incapable of experiencing those emotions...they also do not experience fear or anxiety - Ripley shows intense fear and anxiety every time he seems about to be caught. He is definitely not a psychopath. Tom Ripley has Borderline Personality Disorder.

This film was so deep and unnerving. It shows how destructive obsession can be and how far a person could go in the need for acceptance.

Still his best performance ever. It is so sad that he didn't get a Oscar nomination from this film.
@vaskylark2 жыл бұрын
I agree and also sad his career didn't follow more of this trajectory because he could have ended up a top notch actor, instead of an action hero. I like the Bourne movies don't get me wrong, but that lane is really the lane of Tom Cruise and Damon is more versatile and could have been a top notch dramatic actor.

Very good movie and being a jazz sax man for 35 years I guess I would say that. No I clever film and I believe it got the culture thing right for the times. Of course anybody that knows modern jazz recognises the British altoist and trumpet player playing outside. A very well executed performance by all the actors, to me very believable and enjoyable

One of the best films ever on how a psychopath worms his way into his victim's life, sucks the life out of him/her, even up to murdering them to get what they want. In Dickie Greenleaf's case, his life, money & even his identity. These inhuman predators are terminators, not human beings, & this is the Golden Age for them, especially in America, as the pickings are plenty for narcissistic supply. These demons are the most dangerous predators we'll ever meet, & it's time we learn to recognize their traits & avoid them at all costs.

It is so cringe when interviewers say 'I know you' to the celeb they are interviewing when they have literally met a handful of times for 15 minutes. When this guy tried to hammer home they they were 'really close friends' by saying 'This character just isn't you" I almost had to switch the video off....

I got to hate Dickey a bit more in all honesty. He was, in fact, a bit of a dick. He doesn't accept Ripley for what he is, and insults him. The repression Ripley gets from these flat insults just fuels him and his obsession I believe, Dickey is denying Ripley of being who he really is
@gioluvs18934 жыл бұрын
@@Sam-qc6sz Ripley came into their lives and lied about who he really is. Eventually they all saw through his bullshit. Nobody likes a fake. Had he been up front maybe just maybe he'd have been accepted for his true self.

Gio Luvs looks like someone missed the entire point of the movie lol
@gioluvs18934 жыл бұрын
@@kiwisweet5520 I didn't miss the point. Being up front is a better alternative to killing the guy then making it so that Dickies loved ones think that Dickie killed Freddie. Then killed himself. Tom is trash. Hes a psycho con man. But I LOVE this film! I do. Wouldn't change a thing about it.

For me the film has an important flaw; the fact that Ripley appears to be sociopathic undermines any sympathy one could have with the character and perhaps worse compromises what could have been an interesting exploration of a an identity disorder. Instead he is presented as proceeding from unpremeditated homiced to actual premeatiated murders placing him beyond redemption.
@scarletovergods4 жыл бұрын
Sociopaths are very relatable. They're just like me and you except they can’t understand others’ feelings. They can't control what they are.
