I find it fascinating that he describes Exegisis as marking the end of one musical life and the beginning of another. The Exegesis experience also created a far happier person. I recall him saying that, at his worst pre Exegisis, that music was like a warm comfortable force he could lean into and snuggle against. It was his only barrier between him and a world that terrified him. But need is the mother of invention and his loss became our 4 albums of sublime music gain. Then our (the fans into the long instrumental compositions) loss became his gain as his new shiny person's music became more extroverted and, lets not be coy, commercially successful. I'm happy that he's happy. I'm happy that he left us 10 sides of absolute brilliance that he created from his dilemma. His life, his choices.

The no frills, down to earth, not playing to any particular social trends makes Mike a great artist. One for all times.

Main new insight from interview - he revealed that Incantations was essentially completely composed *before* he did the exegesis musically destructive change in his life.

Great comment. In my opinion (and perhaps maaaaaany others), he won personally but lost musically. I think he subtetly admits it in Changeling, his official bio. In his case (as in many other GREAT artists along history, in music, painting, so on...) stunning creativity comes from horrible suffering....it seems to be his case.

@@juanjavierm He delivered four incredible albums, then went on afterwards to become a happy normal person. I guess that's a win-win for everyone.

I'm surprised, as I always thought it was after. However, Incantations took a while to stick with me, as I thought it was so different, lots of repartition, (which I now know is the point). Listening back, many years on, I now hear clearly how it is the bridge between Ommadawn and Platinum. Loved all his 70's and 80's output, though I'm still trying to love Earth Moving and Heaven's opened.

Very interesting interview. I presume the ‘telecaster project’ became the Guitars album...
@stoffer1083 жыл бұрын
Guitars came out in the 90's (1999) and this is from 2011. I think that project became Man on the rocks (2014) since he mentioned John Robinson, who is the drummer on that album and it's around the same time frame :) Plus he also mentioned sessions over Skype and he talks alot about that in the interveiws and promotional videoes for Man on the rocks.
