Mir Mukhtiyar Ali is a folk singer from Bikaner, Rajasthan belonging to the semi-nomadic community of Mirasis who have been the traditional carriers of the oral tradition of Sufiana Qalam. He blends the Rajasthani folk idiom with refined classicism to sing the poetry of Kabir, Mira, and Sufi poets such as Bulleh Shah. Mukhtiyar Ali has since lent his voice to many Bollywood films and his song ‘Fanny Re’, from the movie Finding Fanny earned him a GiMA Award for Best Music Debut for the year 2015. In his interview with the archive, Mir discusses the meanings behind his song and growing up in a family of musicians.
