Today I bring you a special video. This is an hour long in-depth interview with my mom, Sheila, that aired on my podcast, The Kathryn Morgan Show. Mom tells you everything from her perspective - auditions, summer programs, dealing with having a child who dances, and more. I know many of you don't or can't listen to it, so I wanted to make sure you got to hear this amazing interview! While my mom was a mom of a dancer, she certainly wasn't a dance mom!

Lovely interview and so helpful. My daughter has gone from loving ballet to hating it. After listening to this I have decided to let her drop out despite her natural aptitude and being accepted into a major company school. I appreciate the motherly advice from a woman who knows what she is talking about. Kathryn you are lucky to have such a wise mom!

SUCH a great interview. I’m a classical musician, but I feel like there is a ton here that is applicable to all of the visual arts. I’m definitely passing this along to my students and parents. Thank you so much for doing this.

As a fellow ballet mom to an aspiring professional ballet dancer (she’s 18), I found this chat immensely encouraging! Thank you both! It’s really evident you have a close and beautiful mother-daughter relationship. The tips were steeped in wisdom and I’m sure will be very valuable to many moms out there! We are from Cape Town, South Africa, but my daughter will be heading to New York for her very first American summer school at AAB in June! To go to New York (or anywhere in America!) at 18 for the first time is just ridiculously exciting! 😁 (She’s also looking forward to a trip to Sephora to stock up on make-up! 😜). Continue making all your wonderful KZbin videos, Katie! They’re just second to none!

my daughter (who now is 44) started dancing in her crib, so at 5 she started ballet classes with a school that had a company. By 8 years old she was invited to the company and did her first solo in Who Cares. She wanted to be a part of a summer program in Carlisle Pa. so for the next 6 years she did all that was recommended by her teacher. I watched her go from an angel in the Nutcracker to the Sugar Plum fairy all three shows. I definitely was a proud mom and enjoyed all of it. She never received a scholarship to a summer program until the Pittsburgh Ballet program in her senior year in high school, shared an apartment with another student. My little girl was growing up, and it was time to audition for the company. She made a decision to not do that due to the stress on her body at the age of 17. My disiplined, mature daughter made her decision to end her dancing ... I admit I was so crushed at first and the thought of how hard she had worked to get to this stage of her life saddened me, but she bravely stuck to her guns and quit after 14 years of training. We have so many fond memories of her journey along the way and I couldnt be more proud of her. She is now living in Denver and still loves to see a good ballet and oh I admit I miss watching that ballerina on stage.

Oh my goodness, this was so wonderful!! I love your mom! She seems like an amazing woman. My little Rylee is 4 yrs old and she is one of those who is literally dancing around every waking minute of the day! It’s a very fine line for me as a former child dancer (who never got to fulfill her dream) when it comes to the question are we doing this for her or for me. So far, she just can’t get enough of it but I want to be extremely careful and intuitive over the coming years as she starts to form more opinions about it! This interview literally had me in tears by the end because I just want to be the best momma I can be for her and I can tell that your mom was just that for you! What a joy to listen to! Really! Thank you for this!

Thank you for a very insightful interview. The ballet world is brutal, you are a beautiful dancer and human being, glad your health has improved and you have loving parents and a boyfriend who is loving and supportive. I am not a dancer but had a friend who was, as a member of the public watching the performances, we have no idea of the mental and physical demands placed on the dancers. All the best, health and happiness always.

Katie your mom is a breath of fresh air!!!! I can see why you’ve been so successful both while dancing and now!! Her advice and tips are spot on!! She answered a question I was pondering on. I will go with Jaden this summer, drop and pick her up at the door, be supportive but not to hovering. Thank her for me for her wonderful knowledge! The only problem now is where to go. Jaden has been accepted to Point Park University’s 6 week program, Joffrey Ballet’s 5 week program and 4 year trainee program and MET dance’s 1 week program and I have no idea which one to take her to! Any suggestions you have would be very much appreciated. Thanks

I‘m a non dancer. For a while I did a little tap dance. But I was a child that loved to sing and to dance through the house. To let the music run through my body and watch the pictures in my head the music gave me. I had parents they compared me with my friends and that made a huge mess out of me like your mother said; if you compare your child than you get a broken relationship to your child and it stressed me out that I get always black outs in exams. I hate my parents for the fact that they don‘t could read me and that they are so selfish. I never could let out who I really am because my parents told me that this is a worse habit. So much thank you for that podcast! The podcast moved me to tears! You are such a lucky person to have such good and supportive parents! God be with you!

Hi Katie, even though I am not a dancer ( I am a Flutist), I see some similarities. My mom knew that both my sister and I were passionate from a young age about music. I'm with your mom. I told my daughter that; if you get to the end of this journey and you feel like you've "wasted" four years, then we're not doing something right. It's fine to have a dream. It's fantastic to have a goal. But, if you're not feeling like your journey is worth it, WHILE YOUR ON THE JOURNEY, then you've not thought it out very well. I liken it to saying "I want to visit New York." That's the goal. That's the dream. Great. But, if you miss all the cool and interesting places between Los Angeles and New York, then you missed so much. If you don't get to New York, you can still enjoy every day of the journey thus far...it's about the perspective. But, that's just a dance dad's opinion.

It's very clear how close the two of you are and that you not only love each other, but have a mutual respect for each other. I'd definitely love a video Q and A with you and your Mum, so that we can see your facial expressions and get more of an idea about the dynamics of you guys as mother and daughter.

Go back to the director and find out where you stand. They might have been trying to assess what class to place you. Give it another week or two and if you are still not happy find another school. I started back when I was 18 with the full knowledge of not being a professional, but to get good enough to be in a few things. If you feel like the teachers are not interested in helping you advance, you need to find teachers who will.

I just went to my first ballet class, at 17, and I'm feeling discouraged. First of all I was told I would be in a class with other girls but it was a private lesson. It was not bad but it threw me off a bit. I paid for 1 hour but only did 30 min. Apparently the owner, who I'd talked to to sign up, had told her to only give me half an hour. I know it might have been to see how much I know but I let them know I knew nothing about ballet. We just did stretches and I felt like they just didn't care. This also made it worse. It made me feel like I would amount to nothing because I had not started early. That also made me realize I was ready and willing to work hard to get to where I had to be. I want to go to a studio that specializes in ballet but I'm not sure if I should stay and learn more or just go. I don't want someone to just tell me I did good but not correct me on most of what I do. I want an honest person who is serious about helping me.

always support and praise your children whether is sports or music or dancing, they always will remember your praises I do not allow my children to compare themselves to others...there is going to be someone better....I was very involved in the production and execution of recitals and performances, because of my music background, she had altogether about 15 different music teachers (violin piano, and voice) all of which gave something unique to her, as a musician and as a person....she performed with an opera company, but never as the main character...she did not want to be that..I respected that she wanted to perform as a soloist and she did it and always that will be in our good memories...

Hi Kathryn, I have a question about reading your child. I have an 12 yearold who loves ballet. We live in a small town, she goes to the best ballet school we have here but it's not even as good as the one where you started. She is the best in the class and really exerts herself each class but they only get technique. she never dances at home and therefore gets no experience in artistic expression. You mentioned it was very important. But worse of all she is not ambitious. When I asked her your dad's question about where she wanted to dance, she said she didn't know. when I asked her if she wanted to be a professional ballerina, she also didn't know. At the same time, she puts herself into her ballet classes like into nothing else; comes out in a totally soaked leotard each time. What should I do? Make our family move to a new place so she could get better training or leave things where they are until she gets ambitious enough, which maybe too late? Thanks for considering my question.

Hi Katie and Mom, thank you so much for this fun and interesting interview. A comparison on the Other End of the scale would be hockey players! Thousands and Thousands of children step onto the ice at three years old. Secretly their parents might dream of them playing in the NHL ( l before their child even knows exactly what is). They practice and have 6 games a week, traveling all around playing in tournaments and going to summer camps. The difference is hockey players don't audition - they are chosen by scouts around age 16-17. As I said, thousands and thousands and thousands of children/youth dream of being in the NHL...there are maybe 800 -900 (?) players in the NHL . Period. As your said it's really important to ensure your child has a social life/ athletic life outside of hockey.

Bunhead Lady Melody excellent question !! I’d also love to know the answer as my mother has a condescending attitude towards my desire to dance as an adult , I’m under no illusions myself as I’m too old to ever be professional but I’ve always loved ballet and as an adult would love to see how far i can go in my abilities , I see no reason an adult cannot dance well and progress. Best of luck to you ! And take care 😊
