@Jos Consider the following: Steam is the powerhouse that gives Value all the funding they need, they make a fraction on each game purchase, tax the market and their own games have skins that cost money. All in all they make their money that way. Meaning they don't need to worry about pumping out games to make a profit. They can legit pay everyone to sandbox game ideas forever, with no deadline, stress, third party involvement. And if the game idea doesn't work out? or even become an option? No issue! You still get paid. The money they've earned has given them freedom to work behind the scenes and without the need of hyping up the game until it's near completion. And I think that's good for everyone.
@mikeplurple49424 жыл бұрын
Jos what major gaming company wouldnt?? Its just a matter of what company cares most about quality gaming experience over games with empty substance.
@frenkylizo4 жыл бұрын
@Jos I don't think Valve cares about making money out of each individual product itself. Instead they want to grow their platform - Steam - and make money through that. Looking at the work they've put into VR it's some incredible technology that they're basically just giving away to devs. It doesn't make any money directly, but instead grows the Steam platform. Making money that way. Their work on BCI tech will probably end up being similar. An open platform for devs to use that Valve can then profit off of.

@Jos Mistakes are always made. But when you're not led onward by Shareholders holding the bridle that is your stock's worth, you don't have to come out grovelling for forgiveness or spin some PR bullshit just to make sure your *daddies* don't leave you penniless. Take a good hard look at it, Jos. This is pure capitalism, unburdened by sociopathic, hook-nosed leeches. Whine and cry about every little mistake you want, it will not change the fact that Valve has a better goal than the publicly traded- and hopefully soon to die- "Game Publishers"

The problem with sending information directly to the brain, is that, as he mentioned the brain gets information from many things like the immune system among others, and what if when sending say a visual signal, some noise, which I am sure the signal wont be perfect, is read by the brain as a signal like the immune system for instance, that could cause issues to your health without you even realizing. The brain is just too complex. Don't get me wrong, as technology progresses and matures it might be ok, but I don't see it happening any time soon, not in a commercial way anyways.

Having said that, it's in another league compare to most jobs, I mean, you are making games! A couple of tips: be independent if you can and a small studios is better than a large one.

Campo Santo was NOT working on Firewatch when Valve acquired them, they had released Firewatch over a year (maybe 2?) earlier and were working on In The Valley of the Gods.

When you want more information about brain-computer interfaces at valve, you should watch the video with Gray Newell (Gabe's Son): kzbin.info/www/bejne/aWa0p6yXh9Nphbs

I think brain-computer interfaces are going to be so cool, I cant wait for the kinda stuff you could do if you could actually make players feel physical objects in the game world. Like keyboards in VR are really shitty rn because you cant feel them, but with this you could fix that.

So, the next Half-Life game after VR will use BCI (brain-computer interface)?
@WalrusWinking4 жыл бұрын
Most of the entertainment industry is looking into BCI. Not just Valve, at this stage it's like VR was in the 90s/late80s.

Brain Computer Interface is like VR but without moving your limb, just "thinking" controls the game. Fabulous, i wish i get to try it in my life time.
