@@Chrokosaur What I have written, to be precise. Male lead is an experienced combatant member of a guild dedicated to help people. Neither an orphan nor a chosen one, just a well trained warrior, and his backstory has a balance between pain and mirth. The female lead is a rookie at the guild, a young huntress born in a forest village of mostly hunters, healers, and craftsmen, with no much of a sad backstory beyond his father's death while in service at the same guild. Pretty much an anachronistic fantasy cop story... That is if cops were still privately hired and not very different from soldiers as it used to be in renaissance Europe.

Is there any edgy protagonist in a fantasy novel who has been written in a way that doesn't make you cringe very few pages?
@EvaaraGaezanlei4 жыл бұрын
How about a properly portrayed street urchin with trust issues, PTSD from physical abuse, and hoarding tendencies? And how about a very likable supporting character that's swashbuckler edgy who hates and kills nobles but gets called out for his extremism and almost gets the street urchin protagonist maimed and almost killed due to him following the idiotic "adventure" tropes like bringing a minor into a dangerous situation? If you want both of those, read Mistborn! If you've experienced homelessness, family abuse, and have friends/relatives who are good/kind-hearted BUT bigoted people then you might cringe but for an entirely good and different reason. It's realism makes you cringe because it may sometimes hit too close to home but its tropes are well played and cringe from forced and presumptuous/idiotic narratives won't be an issue.

@@SaviourInDistress I can like almost any cliché if they're done with an original flair and have a lot of depth behind them. But just, flat out clichés... naah. That goes for the guys too of course, if they can do weird shit. XD I can't remember what the first one was?
@SaviourInDistress4 жыл бұрын
@@SysterYster the first one was literally just emo assasin guy XD But i like that sorta stuff too and agree cliches can be done well. My issue with femme fatale is it's just a female using their assets to distract the hero to fuck with them and as soon as they enter the plot you know exactly how the story is going to go from there. There is very little originality or interest with femme fatale. just dull sexy woman screws over man too dumb to see he is being played.
@allyli17184 жыл бұрын
Cliches are only bad if people want complete originality or are so overexposed to them that their original impact is lost. For instance, that first edgy guy was probably super surprising and dark to readers of the 1950s where the Hayes code and step ford wives were a thing, but to us now it reads as edgy (immature and not as badass as he thinks he is). We’ve gotten so many of them that they are no longer dark or surprising to us. If an author can add depth or a twist (like in Mistborn), we love him, even if we know what a cliche he is (unless you value originality a lot, but nothing’s original so I disagree with those people), because he gets around the familiarity and the stuff that makes him feel immature to us and manages to let us feel his darkness and badassery again.

Um, Guts wasn't an edgy protagonist and why do you think Miura did the whole golden age arc, the golden age was there to give Guts nuances and context, and also not make him like other antihero's and Guts was only sexual towards Casca, and his antisocial behaviour was something for him to overcome, I mean right now in the manga he is a kinder, happier person. Also, Guts never whines about his childhood, actually, he suppressed his childhood trauma. I'm not trying to be that obsessive fan but you saying that Guts is 1, is so wrong because he doesn't fit any of those sentences he said in the video. Also, Guts never commits random acts of violence, for the most part, he only attacks people who attack him or hunts apostles. To be honest, with all this I'm left assuming you haven't actually read the manga.

And then theres' me, who is trying to write something and his protagonist is... Edwin, a negotiator for criminals and black market, that didn't want to accept his father will to enlist him in the army. So he "escaped" stealing a boat (writing some excuses on a note left behind; the carpenter was a good friend..) and started to go into another nation and do his job. One day he's called by a singular client, to negotiate the selling of a misterious scroll. Now, the negotation doesn't go well, both part are starting to prepare themselves for some brawl, and Edwin thinks to steal the scroll and go away, but he's caught, and he tries to get away from the window (it's a port city with internal watercourse), trying to throw some coals at the guys who are trying to get him cause, you know, distract them by burning coals. The problem is: he didn't expect to use magic without wanting it (everyone can do magic in my setting; there are some people who are talented etc. but there isn't someone who isn't capable of doing magic), and the place..explodes, making him fall out of the window. Now i'll cut: they're searching for Edwin: both the "secret police" that searches who uses magic out of rules and in a dangerous way...and he's searched from the Main Antagonist, because Edwin has stolen that scroll. The point is that: the antagonist..it's The Chosen One. Yes, it's an antagonist that want's to improve and save the world, repairing it after a catastrophe happened a couple of centuries ago..but you know, it's a suicidal mission for our antagonist, and not everyone favours him; someone will try to kill him, others pledge to him in agreement..
