Oh, hey, I wasn't nearly as awkward as I remembered being. Neat. Also really cool to hear other people's stories! Awesome video. Maybe I'll have to bring my camera next year...

It is, and those sorts of innovative language use by kids is always kinda amazing. Like a view on how the world could work, if the conventions of our language were different. I always like that. ^_^

Teaching in Northern California has exposed me to the slang hella, but even funnier, the polite (classroom) version--hecka. That totally cracks me up.

I also enjoy words that share similar roles across languages even if they're parallel evolution. A lot of that might be that there's just only so many short exclamations available for languages with similar phonology, but even so it's fun.

I think maybe you're correct on that, but there's still a lot of variation between languages, and it's interesting to see how it works. And tracking that variation is important, too. I'm often reminded of the fact that I used to say "huh!" to express interest in Japanese, the way I do in English. But in Japanese, that read to Japanese speakers as "haa?!", more or less, which is what you say when you're like affronted or angry. So I was accidentally communicating that I was angry a lot, until a friend suggested that I might mean [he:]. And then we fixed that. ^_^

Absolutely. And I think that sounds which end up with opposite meanings can be even more interesting, and important to avoid.

Me too, although I feel like I can't really use it in my dialect the right way? But that goes with what Ali was saying in the video - that kind of word, whatever you grew up with, is what feels natural to use. And since it's not mine, it doesn't. ^_^

Damn, forgot to say that the dot is called a "séamhú" (pronounced shay-vu)

Yeah, I think what happened was that you mentioned that when you were explaining it to us pre-filming, and then when we filmed it, you didn't repeat the term again. But it was still quite interesting! ^_^
