When I was a kid in the 1980s, we had a family friend who had fled North Korea with his family in the 1960s. He was a former captain or something in the NK army. I never knew the full story, being a kid at the time, but I believe he killed one or more soldiers at a checkpoint on the way out. Probably had to.

Growing up in japan, my earliest best friend was from N Korea. At the time i didnt know what that meant in the late 90s but his family was always so cautious. Whenever we hung out it had to be at their house and they had to know exactly where their son would be. So crazy

You should definitely take a look of the footage of an escape a few years ago. One guy made it through the DMZ getting shot at and a whole bunch of crazy stuff. The entire event was captured from CCTV in South Korea and I believe the guy did actually make it across with a bunch of GSWs (gun shot wounds). Crazy stuff.

Kim Jong Un went to boarding school in Europe during the 90s, which is where he watched the Bulls. He watches stuff from South Korea regularly and knows about all of the big Kpop bands. Now they face a population decline and he was seen begging people to have kids so they can continue their legacy. Tragic all the way round.

Regarding Rodman, Kim Jun Un went to a boarding school in Switzerland in the early to mid-90s. While there, he fell in love with baseball and the Chicago Bulls, which is why Rodmand was sent as an low key ambassador to smooth relations.

story of how Rodman became a regular visitor in North Korea: Kim Jong Un turns out to be a 90s bulls fan lol. He actually wanted Michael Jordan and scottie pippen to visit North Korea and play in a exhibition game but MJ understandably declined the offer (or at least never responded). Rodman on the other hand thought it was an exhibition game in South Korea but it was too late to decline by the time he reached to Bejing (cuz china is allies with North Korea) to be transfered to Pyongang. But eventually they bonded together and became friends during their first meeting. Kinda unrelated but Kim Jong Un's father is even worse when it comes to "inviting" foreign celebirites, there was a famous South Korean director/actress couple in the 70s. They were divorced so the actress went to live in Hong Kong to direct an acting school only to be kidnapped in 1978, the reason was to bait the director to look for her since he still cares about her despite the divorce. He would eventually get kidnapped while looking for her and both were imprisoned in North Korea and forced to direct films all the way till 1986 where they both escaped to U.S. via a visit to Vienna approved by Kim Jong II under a pretense to do a research on a upcoming film. Afterwards they would live in the U.S. for several years before returning back to South Korea seperately

There’s a wild video of a guy defecting from North Korea to South Korea across the DMZ. If I remember correctly he stole a truck and drove it through multiple blockades to make it to the border before he had to get out and run with soldiers chasing after him and shooting at him. He made it across the border into South Korea but he had been shot multiple times. I think he had to wait for a couple hours before South Korean soldiers could rescue him from where he was and get him to a hospital. But that’s not even where it ends, because when they got him to the hospital they discovered he was also infested with parasites and worms, malnourished, on top of the bullet wounds and probably some other stuff that I’m forgetting. It’s pretty crazy to watch the footage from the security cameras on the South Korean side that captured his escape though. And he pulled through and made a full recovery as well, so cheers to that! Also, just thought I’d throw in this not-so-fun fact, North Korea has executed people using anti-aircraft guns and ammunition. Guns literally meant for shooting planes out of the sky, used on people. I haven’t seen any video of this, but it essentially just turns people into pink mist when it hits them. So that’s pretty horrific.

Also in North Korea, as in other communist regimes, local neighborhood groups have to meet regularly to report on what each other are doing 'wrong' or need to improve. A perfect system, because it keeps everyone watching everyone, so no one is brave enough to step out of line or start pushing back on the regime's laws. In Soviet Russia, if you snitched on your neighbor and the KGB took them away, you were able to take over ownership of their house -- so then you also had neighbors outright lying about people being traitors, etc. I've been told by Russians that's one of the reasons Russians will be more direct with you instead of gossip behind your back; in the West that can sometimes make them seem rude or confrontational, but they prefer to tell you direct because they associate gossiping or complaining behind your back with the underhanded tactics of those Soviet days.

When I was in the USMC I had an opportunity to visit the DMZ border between South and North Korea. There is a 12-foot-long table separating North and South inside one of the blue buildings.
