Only thing worse than a hot dog on a slice of bread is a burger made with bread instead of buns. The grease would soak into the bread and almost make it liquid and your fingers would get all greasy and run down your arm. We got McDonald's at home? Mother this ain't no McDonald's smh

The struggle meals took me ALL the way back! Being our mom got paid once a month because she worked in the school system, there were times she was able to make $5 last us through until her next payday which was a miracle in itself! We thoroughly enjoyed hood hot dogs, corn flakes with the extra sugar, syrup bread, spaghetti with butter and salt if we didn't have the sauce and meat, Ramen, PB&J and hoghead cheese with saltine crackers, too.

Growing up in Japan, I usually resorted to eating instant ramen noodles or rice balls from 'convenient stores' (Deli type shit) to fill me up (pause). But if I didn't have enough money, the most simple struggle meal that I had was rice with whatever I can find in my fridge or cabinet (Rice w/soy sauce and butter. Rice w/raw eggs, Rice w/mayonnaise, Rice w/potato chips (especially the Garlic flavor ones) and Rice w/ramen broth. For bentos, I usually get them のり弁 (Nori-Ben)= Rice covered with sheets of seaweed since it was dirt cheap. My ma used to make me them Yakisoba-Pan (Fried Noodle Bread) during kindergarten since glizzys weren't popular in Japan. Just fry some noodles and put them in some bread. Get some soy sauce and you set. For struggle sushi I had them かっぱ巻き(Cucumber Rolls) or たくわん海苔巻き (Pickled radish rolls) since my family couldn't afford 'real' sushi (tuna, salmon, etc.) But I was mad amazed how creative Americans can be with them struggle meals. A roommate of mine during college made majority of these at the room but also had them 'Prison Burritos' and shit. Baffled my Oriental mind. Edit: Forgot to mention the bite sized ramen. Buy a packet of ramen (I go for the ‘Sapporo Ichiban’ instead of the ‘top ramen’ since it breaks apart easier), break them into bite sized pieces, pour the seasoning pack, shake and enjoy. Still to this day I eat these whenever I feel like a depressing ass Californian Roll.

A few of my struggle recipes I've made over the years for all my strugglers out there. Mackerel cakes, pop open a can of mackerel and drain the brine, split the fish in half and scoop out the spines and ribs, mash the fish and add breadcrumbs, an egg and whatever savory seasonings you have on hand like cajun seasoning, diced onion or Italian seasoning. Then form into little cakes and fry in a pan with about a quarter inch of oil flipping once. Just be careful with the hot oil. Prison pad ti, make raman according to package directions and add a spoonful of peanut butter and some hot sauce. A few other raman add ons I've tried are raman with egg, raman alfredo, raman with sardines and raman with mackerel. Struggle jambalaya, make some spanish or yellow rice and add beans, canned diced tomatoes and chilies, frozen peppers and onions and canned mackerel.

Everything I've cooked in this unit has come out great kzbin.infoUgkxD4Qeo-HRLxMfom_PDinM_SBfes00qJsB ! Everything tastes so good. Some of the recipes I've changed a little to improve the taste. For instance, for french fries which call for no oil, I spray them with olive oil and season them with salt and pepper. They come out great! It makes the best toast I have ever eaten. The recipe I use calls for lightly buttering both sides of the bread. It calls for cooking at 400 degrees for 5 minutes on one side and then 2 minutes on the other side. This time has a lot to do with the kind of bread you are using...so keep an eye on it. Also, the fans in this Ninja are a lot stronger than other air fryers. So lay a metal spoon or something on the bread to keep it from flying around. It's a little extra work to use your Ninja as a toaster but it is worth it!

@Chao yes we are all up now. Most of us joined the military. It was the trenches. Had to chop firewood year-round. So we would have heat in the winter. We only had a wooden stove for heat. It would go out in the night and be cold as hell in the morning. Getting buckets of water from my grandma's house because the pipes were always frozen. I wasn't a bad childhood. It just makes you appreciate the little things in life 😁

Heh, I can relate. If there was no milk, we'd boil the water, put sugar in it, and mix it with the cereal. We'd do the same with the milk if the cereal wasn't coated in sugar, and if the milk wasn't consistent of it. Plain milk though, was definitely more preferred than the water tactic. Noodles were bomb as hell too. Also, I tried sugar and bread before, as well as dry crackers, and man was that an awful time. I can say without a doubt though, that chocolate dust and bread was the sh-t. Peanut butter by itself was definitely a banger too, especially if it had nuts in it.

When there's nothing to eat, and you manage to find something and make an innovative art out of it, for some reason that random piece of creative craft, would make a much better treat compared to the average meal- ESPECIALLY when you're starving, because let me just say this; When you're hungry, you'll eat almost anything, and that anything, can actually taste good. The thing with struggle meals though, is that when they're the only option, you get to test your creativity, and you get to experiment on things. For example, I never knew how good MILO chocolate dust tasted with raisin loaf bread, until I actually tried it, and man that sh-t was good. Even though more foods are available now, compared to how they were before in my life, I still at times prefer struggle meals.

Hood dogs are a staple in my household. We also had a classic I like to call, Peanut Butter Bread. Basically you put peanut butter on two slices of bread and combine to make them a sandwich. To make the loaf last, we’d only spread peanut butter on one slice of bread (no jelly), and fold it so it’d be like somewhat of an appetizer. Most of these are staples in my childhood if I got to be honest. Ohio does not treat you well. We eat these foods on the daily, and we still have no money at the end of month. Consider that a sign to not come to Ohio. Unless you’re from here. Ohioans are ingrained with these foods. This shit is like a documentary, it’s crazy. Loved the video guys. Best channel out here.
