My favourite dumb criminal story is of Klaus Schmidt who tried robbing a bank in Berlin in 1995. The tellers noticed he was acting strangely, when they asked if they should put the money in the bag, he responded “yes this is a real gun, I’m armed and dangerous!” The manager realised he was deaf and set off the alarm, it was a very loud alarm, but Schmidt didn’t seem to notice. The manager did guess correctly, he was born deaf. After his arrest, the gun was found to be a toy gun. The icing on the cake is he tried to sue the bank for taking advantage of his disability. The case was rejected.
