You are absolutely right! What is your take on the performance of the Syro Malabar Catholic Church for the last three generations? It is true that the Church has flourished in its membership and material possessions, but on the other hand, there is a big landslide when it comes to ethics and morality of its Clergies and followers. The word, ‘Gratitude’ has disappeared from the dictionary of the Church as evidenced by the increasing number of parents and grandparents dying in solitude at home and abroad. So, the SMCC has gradually molded an ungrateful generation. There may be many lame excuses, but there is nobody in the world who is worse than a person who does not return the loan he has taken from another person. Charity begins at home. Global evangelization does not make any sense unless they first have eyes to see Jesus at least in their parents and grandparents when they revert to their second infancy. Evangelization does not make any sense if it is not manifested in deeds. It is pretense and hypocrisy. 1950s and 60s: Material expansion of the Church: The churches were small and were not very fancy. The Church owned only a few schools, colleges, hospitals, orphanages, land/valuable property etc. The Clergies: They were ‘alter Christus’. The whole and soul of the Church was the Parish priest who visited families and did the annual retreats. They were accompanists who knew the families, and not accomplishers who built big churches. They were spiritual leaders. The typical SMCC church: It was headed by the Parish priest. There was no politics or business affiliated with the church committee. No subterfuge business flourished with the knowledge of the committee. SMCC Families: They were stable/ happy and were content with what they had. The wives obeyed the husbands, the children obeyed the parents and teachers, the children respected everybody, especially the elders. Adults/Young couples: They made sure that at least one of the well-doing kids took care of their parents to their deathbed. They were grateful and paid back to their parents what they received in their childhood. They left their home to North India or abroad either to support their parents or family or for missionary works. In those days, in dioceses like Palai, if there were no priest or nun in a family, the village thought that there was something wrong with the family. Mission work was to such an extent that children walked around singing: Chechy jnanum poretteyo Mission velackenneyum Koode kondu pokaamo? Koode kondu pokaamo? Achieved basic duties of a religion: by instilling in people meaning and purpose to life, by maintaining stability and unity of families/morality and ethics of the society/ the physical and mental well-being of the population. . Evaluation: The Church did not expand materially but had enough outreach programs such as schools, orphanages etc. The Liturgy and Sacraments were spiritual. The spiritual fruitfulness of the Church is indicated by more conversions/baptisms, happy individuals, stable and happy families, sacrificial life of individuals who took up the cross to leave home to distant places to take care of the family, a grateful generation who took care of their parents to their deathbed, lot of houses with priests and filled seminaries etc. Elopements, suicides, divorces, deaddiction centers etc. were unheard of, people seldom went to doctors, all indicative of physical and mental health of the population. So, the Syro Malabar Church of the 1950s/60s was predominantly a very spiritual Church following the footsteps of Christ. 2000s and 2020s: Material expansion of the Church: The Church’s outreach programs such as nursing homes, hospitals, medical colleges, Engineering colleges etc. transformed from community outreach programs to business ventures exploiting the community. With the profit from the above ventures, the Church acquired a lot of land and valuable property. The Clergies: They are ‘alter Mammon’. There are Udampady priests, retreat center priests, miracle healers, defiant and disobedient priests, priests, KZbin juggler priests, and priests who interpret the Bible obfuscating the truth to meet their agenda. Parish priests do not visit families and do not know how to do annual retreats. They are accomplishers who build big churches, but do not have the time to get to know the families in their parishes. They are mostly money managers and swindlers. The typical SMCC church: It is headed by the Parish priest. There are a lot of politics or subterfuge businesses affiliated with the church committee making it a house of business. Various businesses developed and flourished under the wings of the priest and the Parish committee. SMCC Families: They are unstable/unhappy, and homes are worse than hell as priests have brainwashed all Eves (just as Satan enticed Eve in the Garden of Eden in the book of Genesis) making them narcistic prayerholics. The wives do not obey the husbands, the children do not obey the parents and teachers, the children do not respect anybody including the elders. Adults/Young couples: They leave their parents to vultures. They are selfish and narcissistic. They leave homes not to take care of the family, but to enjoy their life to the fullest. They are ungrateful and do not even want to pay back to their parents what they received from their parents in their childhood incurring ‘utharippu kadam.’ Failed to achieve basic duties of a religion: by not instilling in people meaning and purpose to life, by not maintaining stability and unity of families/morality and ethics of the society/the physical and mental well-being of the population, and by erasing the basic virtue of ‘Gratitude’ from the population. What is religion, if it cannot maintain and instill inner peace, tranquility, and stability in the individual, family, and society? Evaluation: The Church acquired a lot of material wealth. The Liturgy and Sacraments were transformed from spiritual to ritual. The spiritual barrenness/vanity of the Church is indicated by no conversions/fewer baptisms, unhappy individuals, unstable and unhappy families, narcistic lifestyle of individuals who leave home to distant places to make more money for themselves, and an ungrateful generation who refused to take care of their sickly and senile parents. Fewer houses with priests and lean seminaries are indicative of material inclination of the population. Elopements, suicides, divorces, deaddiction centers etc. are part and parcel of daily life, which are all indications of physical and mental problems of the population. The clandestine mission of the Church is acquiring property and wealth under the masquerade of salvation. The Church failed in fulfilling even the basic duties of a religion. So, the Syro Malabar Church of the 2000s/2020s is predominantly a very material Church following the footsteps of the Pharisees and Sadducees of Christ’s times. This is what the Syro Malabar Church accomplished in the last two to three generations. The stable, grateful, and happy families of the 1950s were transformed into unstable, ungrateful, and unhappy families of the 2020s. It is a great fall from heaven to hell. All these evil changes happened under the very nose of 65 or so SMCC bishops and almost 9500 priests in the Church. Most of the current clergies are not the followers of Jesus Christ but the followers of Lucifer(pride), Mammon(greed), Leviathan(envy), Satan(wrath) or Belphegor(sloth). (Look sideways. Look at the Hindu community in Kerala. They have practically no priests, no mandatory Temple services, no Catechism, no visit to temples, no sermons, no homilies, no mushroom-like retreat centers, No KZbin pujaries, nobody coaxing them to pray 24x7 etc. etc. They have not changed much from the 1950s to the 2020s. Most of them are less devious and more philanthropic than SMCC members reined and bridled by a retinue of Clergies and ordeals all of which are going the wrong way.)
