This is a great tip as I did not know that gouache works better on hot press paper. I will give it a go. Thank you for all your wonderful tips.

Lynne, gouache works on any sized paper. I use it in my sketchbooks.

Great tutorial. I am new to gouache and I do use watercolors. This is all new to me so I found this tutorial to clearly and succinctly provide me with questions I had. You answered a lot of my questions in a very short span of time. I will watch this video a few more times to absorb all the info. Thank you so much!

Dianne could you do a quick tip on negative spaces...especially if one is exploring contemporary art ?

Alka, I will put this request on our filming calendar. Because we film these Tips several weeks in advance of their appearing on KZbin, it will most likely be May before it appears.

Thanks so much for addressing this, Dianne. Since gouache dries so quickly how do you keep it from doing so during a painting? Does having a palette with a lid help to keep it over a period of time and can it be revived when it dries out?
@Kyomiibrown7 жыл бұрын
Joani Stotler Gouache is very very easily reactivated with water - same as watercolour. You can even dampen it on your paper to rework it once dry.

Makes me want to try Gouache(like an acrylic" in few strokes"), instead of using acrylics, which I find has strong odors and can be sticky and very messing. I like that you can use smooth paper(any.) Can I ask you, can you use Gouache on canvas?
@IntheStudioArtInstruction4 жыл бұрын
Deborah, it is best not to use gouache on canvas because canvas is sealed with gesso which prevents the gouache from adhering to it. Your best bet is to use a paper or artist grade board.

What is the difference between gouache and casein? I am thinking to learn one of them in order to use as sketching medium. I paint in oil and oil is not very handy to carry around casually to be used. So, the ideas can be worked on as well as some reference for the next painting. Which method would be most beneficial for that purpose? Thank you in advance.
@IntheStudioArtInstruction Жыл бұрын
One major difference between gouache and casein is their binders. Gouache has a gum binder whereas casein has a milk binder. After drying, gouache is re-wettable whereas casein is not.

Thank you a lot for this helpful demonstration. Any suggestion for a Gouache palette to do studies in a sketchbook?
@IntheStudioArtInstruction7 жыл бұрын
I enjoy a limited palette, however I do have a number of gouache tube colors (we artists do that, don't we). If you are new to gouache, you might begin with thalo blue, alizarin crimson, cadmium red light, cadmium yellow and titanium or permanent white. These will give you a broad range of mixtures as well as a full range of values.

Thank you Dianne! I like your gouache mixing palette. I am an oil painter but would really like to try doing some gouache plein air studies .Would you be able to share the brand or characteristics to look for in a palette like yours?
@IntheStudioArtInstruction7 жыл бұрын
I've had this little palette for some time and can't remember its maker, but a very similar version of it is found at www.amazon.com/MEEDEN-Empty-Watercolor-Palette-Transparent/dp/B071HP6B4G/ref=sr_1_16?s=arts-crafts&ie=UTF8&qid=1515162352&sr=1-16&keywords=watercolor+palette+travel

If you are painting a bird in watercolor, is it acceptable to paint the white highlight feathers in gouache rather than trying to reserve the white of the paper?
@IntheStudioArtInstruction6 жыл бұрын
It is if you are not a watercolor purist. This is the kind of thing James Gurney does all the time, but those who are staunch watercolor purists will tell you it's not acceptable. Frankly, I think if it works, do it. I don't put much stock in purists.
@mariegamber6 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! I appreciate that. I know I tried painting a bird from a tutorial that used it and I ended up getting some comments on why I used it! That explains it :) LOL I think I will try both :)

And what's the difference between these and colored India Ink? They are water based too
@IntheStudioArtInstruction7 жыл бұрын
One difference is that ink comes in liquid form whereas traditional watercolor and gouache come in either tubes or cakes. The other is that their formulas are different. Many mediums are water based, but have different characteristics and uses.

Tube - good. Pans - good. Cakes - not good. (Can't get strong color.)
@IntheStudioArtInstruction6 жыл бұрын
If you let those cakes soak in water until the color is soft, you can get strong color.
