The very first thing I do with new paints is to make a mixing chart. It’s one of the fastest ways to explore the possibilities of a new tube of paint. I’ve fallen out of my painting lately, and doing a color exercise seems like a fabulous way to get back into it again.

hi Dianne, thank you for your wonderful lessons and the superb way you explain various concepts. I would appreciate if you will do a video of arbitrary color in paintings like Matisse sometimes did.

Thanks. I will put your suggestion on our filming schedule. I do want to add that even though Matisse's selection of color might have been arbitrary, his execution wasn't.

I don't know what I'm missing but I can follow you and your teaching is so thorough but when I try on my own I still just look at the color wheel. I get the 1st part but in the exercise I didn't get the blue and purple until you said. I'm not even sure what to ask. It seems like we're deconstructing the tube color which makes sense but I can't seem to get too far with it. I've tried doing mixing charts and again get lost. Please help. The tip was excellent but I'm missing something. Thank you Dianne.

The color wheel shows us ONLY the relationship of the hues, not the values of color. Because of the way the colors are placed on the traditional wheel, we can make decisions about how to mix them by the hues each color contains and what that hue will do to another hue. Every hue has the potential to be any value. THAT we can determine with a value scale. And every hue has the potential to desaturate (neutralize) it's complement. That information is on the wheel. So for each tube color, the questions are: (1) What hue is it? (2) What value of that hue is it? and (3) What is its degree of saturation or desaturation?
